Michael Brookes (technohippy) As some of you know I run a blog that features other authors as well as my own news and interests. I'm looking to add a regular guest blog feature.

The post should relate to the other content on my blog in some way, so it could be about writing, or horror, or science fiction. If you have other thoughts then let me know and I'm happy to judge the proposal on its own merits.

If you are interested then drop me a line.

Michaelbrent Collings (michaelbrentcollings) | 110 comments I didn't - your post just said "an email will be winging its way to you shortly- thanks!" so I assumed the email address (my general fansite email address) I provided in my post was sufficient for you to get started. You need a specific PM?

message 23: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) Checking my email it looks like you replied once, but then didn't get back to me after then.

message 24: by Michaelbrent (new)

Michaelbrent Collings (michaelbrentcollings) | 110 comments If so then my deepest apologies if I am the one who dropped the ball. If you want to re-pick up I will be a better player, if not I totally understand. I looked through my emails before posting to make sure I hadn't missed anything, so I'm wondering if your followup got eaten by my spam filter, which at times chooses to be hyperselective about what I get to read for some reason. ;o) Cheers!

(back) update: no, I see that you can't. You have to be 'registered' in some way. Seems counterproductive.

So I will just post here.

The first one I read was by Lisa Binion. Its just a kind of lightweight set of musings on today's 'scary reads'. Consistent behavior in characters; etc. It was just 'okay'. There's a lot more she could have contributed; but didn't. For the same amount of time in reading this kind of thing one could go to HP Lovecraft's famous essay and find some really challenging assumptions. Or Poe, who wrote criticism on his craft as well.

Anyway, Lovecraft posits that the primary goal of horror is to invoke sensations of dread. I agree; his statement is simple but he expands on it wonderfully, his essay is at least 60 pages long.

Nothing to add as a follow-up to this author's statements--he just didn't lay anything down that was controversial. He spoke to his own subjective reasons for being a horror author; fine..but that hardly sums up all the reasons why any other author might turn to this genre. In his own case, he says that he's been through some hairy-scary experiences. Okay so, what about authors who have not? What lies behind their writing careers? Oh and why title the discussion 'true horror'? Curious.

message 32: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) He did make the point that everyone experiences their own horror in their lives in varying guises, so we draw on those experiences and transpose them into a different form.

message 33: by Feliks (last edited Aug 25, 2013 08:23AM) (new)

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) The blog post on, "What makes a good book review".

This is a huge topic that here is only given a glancing treatment. The discussion might be better framed as "what's the minimum one is expected to do when reviewing someone's book online" --but even at that, the naming of just three admonitions is sidestepping a raft of issues. Yes, its worthwhile to be reminded about politeness. A lot more left unsaid though--online book reviewing is currently exploding and causing all sorts of havoc. Lots to address.

Couldn't disagree with this guy more. Receiving his remarks was a mildly painful 90 seconds; wincing, grimacing, smirking, and rolling my eyes. We would not get along at a keg party.

This is not as stern a criticism as it sounds. Although I disagree with O'Brien; at least he invoked a strong reaction in me. Some of the other posts lacked his cogency. In a threaded-discussion, I want opinions to provoke me and move me to reply. At least he did that much!

message 35: by Feliks (last edited Aug 25, 2013 06:36AM) (new)

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) The blog post, 'Strength of Character' was the best I encountered from the offerings available from the TOC at the right. I would say I sampled maybe half of the post choices? Slightly less than half?

But this one was a decent read (even though brief) which could conceivably arouse a peck of rebuttals. But still there's no way to do so without registering on your site. Its unfortunate.

message 36: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) Any blog post is a distilled aspect for a larger topic, after all they are usually around 500 words. She's made the key points I think are needed for a well written review (of course the post was hers, not mine :-) ). Be polite, be honest and say what you liked or didn't like about it.

Oh. This is news to me. I'm not very familiar with the world of blogs, I reckon. I don't frequent them often. So, there's a larger discussion of which Ms. Binion's is just a sliver? Or are you saying that this is what might potentially occur somewhere?

Yes, the login requirement is an obstacle for me. I'm sure there's a good reason for it but it definitely thwarts my participation.

Blog posts tend to be bite sized chunks rather than full essays.

The required login keeps most of the spam at bay, it also means I know who I'm speaking with :-)

message 40: by Feliks (last edited Aug 25, 2013 06:58AM) (new)

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) Aha. I get it now.

My caution in these areas is well-founded. As authors, readers, and reviewers often seem to waging digital war on each other via the net these days--belligerence which only looks to be increasing--I won't 'sign up' anywhere. That's part of my reasoning.
