More like scary.

Amazon ran off every author that ever posted in their forums.

message 4: by Ken B (new)

Ken B | 6810 comments From the Goodreads release:

"3. Amazon supports us continuing to grow our vision as an independent entity, under the Goodreads brand and with our unique culture."

Not sure I've ever seen that work out as planned

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

So if I log on goodreads using my nook hd tablet... it might explode???

Lol. I have nothing against Amazon as a whole. But I hate the way everything is turning online now. I love my ereaders (I have a kindle too) but I still mourn for bookstores. And now its happening to other retailers too.

message 6: by Gatorman (new)

Gatorman | 8320 comments I've heard so many nightmare stories about Amazon, it makes me a bit wary.

message 7: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 29, 2013 10:54AM) (new)

The more I hear about them I am too to be honest. I haven't had much to do with Amazon. But I don't like the idea of content on this site being censored in any way. Goodreads works the way it does because it is ran and for readers. Amazon are not readers - they are sellers. Not sure how this will balance out. Hopefully just annoying ads like the ones I already ignore.
I also have to wonder how much control will they get. Will it stop at books, personal libraries, and reviews. Or will Amazon have a say on how the separate clubs are ran? I would think not... but who knows?

message 8: by jb (new)

jb Byrkit (jbbyrkit) | 2035 comments I have to say I am not too thrilled with this merger. I am a nook ereader so I am concerned what this will do. I borrow ebooks from the library as well as buy from BN. I rarely buy anything from Amazon. I worry about how Amazon will push their books and take over advertising. I have enough problems with that little girl in the rocking chair as it is!

message 9: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 1434 comments I also usually avoid giving my money to Amazon unless I need to quickly buy a gift for someone else or textbooks. I own a Nook, so when I buy e-books, it's from Barnes & Noble. I mostly get books from the library and independent bookstores though. I'm not sure how this will affect how the site is run but I'm always wary of a corporation taking over things.

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm a nook reader too. And I use my nook tablet on goodreads a lot. I hope there's no blackout for us. Or penalty.

You vill be rounded up und moved to a ghetto next to ein authors. Amazon does nicht like authors und those who use ein Nooks!

Violators vill be shut!

Sieg Heil!

message 12: by Dee (new)

Dee | 26 comments Although I read exclusively on my Kindle, I can't understand why Amazon would buy Goodreads when they already own Shelfari - a much, much lesser site that basically does the same thing.

message 13: by Gatorman (new)

Gatorman | 8320 comments Since I can access Amazon.com with my Nook, I'm not concerned about getting shut out of accessing GR on my Nook. However, I'm sure Amazon will be promoting its products and special books like crazy.

They don't on Shelfari......

11811 (Eleven) (11811) | 1561 comments A lot of people struggled when tablets turned to scrolls and Gutenberg turned the world upside down trying to make print look like handwriting but in the end it all worked out so I'm not ready to freak out over it yet.

message 16: by Feliks (new)

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) Why not join the main discussion? There was a banner+link for few hours on the GR main page but now its gone. Here's where to go however. I hope you guys speak your mind about this issue.

Astoundingly casual way to put the matter. Its like the guy falling out of a skyscraper: "Well, okay so far..."

Comparing Amazon to Gutenberg is kinda like comparing Al Gore to Nikola Tesla.

I'm all for relaxing and watching what happens, but after seeing what happened on the Amazon Forums while I did is not something I want to see repeated here.

Authors and readers make this site great.
Trolls and lunatics belong on Facebook.

message 20: by 11811 (Eleven) (new)

11811 (Eleven) (11811) | 1561 comments That thread was huge so I went local with my main group but you're right, it was too casual. I should have gone with 'wait and see next quarter.' Amazon can potentially have a major fail in their future but I'm still optimistic that they won't want to disappoint the apprehensive majority of Goodreads members. Time will tell.

I don't think comparing handwriting to print vs print to e-ink is much of a stretch but I could be wrong. At the very least, the speed of the trend seems comparable.

Gutenberg and Tesla's motives were a far cry from Amazon's and Al Gore's.......

Char | 17459 comments I'm not gonna get all freaked out about this yet.

Hopefully they will just leave GR alone, other than making an "import purchase from Amazon" capability. That would be nice. It's one of the things I like about Shelfari. Probably the only thing, really.

That was a while ago, Charlene.
It happened in the Horror Forum.

I know you would, but I didn't know you then. It was just Kealan, spacemonkey, Horror Queen and me.
Next thing we know, it's TrollFest.

Fingers crossed everyone!

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3047 comments The goodreads rocking chair girl is likely gone since Amazon has alot more bandwith and space so timeouts and too many users may not happen anymore, or theyll give her a nice Amazon shirt to wear to further our hatred for her

message 39: by Ken B (last edited Jun 21, 2013 12:57AM) (new)

Ken B | 6810 comments I just posted this short review of The Bar on the Seine on GR and copied it over onto Amazon:

Trysts, blackmail and murder.

A death row inmate drops a last-minute hint to the inspector about an unsolved murder that happened six years ago. Maigret follows up on the meager hint and finds himself in the middle of a web of trysts, blackmail and murder.

4 STARS

I got a reply from Amazon that my review could not be posted there citing:

Objectionable material:
• Obscene or distasteful content
• Profanity or spiteful remarks
• Promotion of illegal or immoral conduct

ITS A FUCKING MURDER MYSTERY! WHAT THE HELL!

Is this kind of censorship that we have to look forward to when Amazon takes over here?

message 40: by [deleted user] (new)

????
Who monitors the reviews anyway? Are there words and phrases that get automatically flagged? That's my best guess. I honestly see nothing that should have triggered a response.

That is a significant bad omen. Now I'm prematurely bummed out.

message 42: by Rachel (new)

message 46: by Char (new)

Char | 17459 comments I have had posts in their fora (hate that word) rejected when posting titles of BOOKS THEY SELL. Seriously.

I'm pretty sure it's just their bots. Their bots suck.

message 47: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments I hope they just leave GR the hell alone.

message 48: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3047 comments Well I wish Goodreads did half the monitoring that Amazon does with reviews..

message 49: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments I really don't want reviews monitored. I would like for there to be a rule about the nasty, slutty profile pics that GR currently allows.

The only rule Amazon has are never use the word "idiot".

It upsets their moderating mildew.
