Yes, it doesn't seem to last overnight for me. But if you want to keep using it, you can just click the link again each day...

Ace (aceonroam) I can't see the new navigation either, I tried doing the survey, but I still cannot see it....

- I am using IE11 (at work, yes, but it's lunchtime here). Perhaps I will try on Safari tonight when I get home.

I hope they execute this change better than the last debacle with the fonts.

It may well be Katherine, it could either be cookies or something or perhaps just punishment for being more interested in GR than I am in my work. I'm anxious to get home to my mac and thoroughly check things out tonight!

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Thanks to Kathryn for her link! I completed all the survey - GR may just use our feedback, who knows? Used the new link for about half and hour then clicked back out into the 'old' version. I found the changes not too bad. Let's face it - they will do the roll-out, in whatever version, anyway, won' they? In time, we will all get used to the new format.

I was interested and amused to read some of the users comments in https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... There is one user in particular who seems to be very negatively vocal about any changes GR has ever made. She doesn't seem to agree with anything. Must have been a very difficult person to work work, imo.

I have tried on my mac at home now, on Chrome, Safari and also Firefox but cannot get this link to work for me, I am still seeing the old header/menu.

(I have put some spaces in so that you can see the whole URL which the link takes me to and I have tried closing browsers and other such tricks)

https: //www. goodreads. com/ ?enable_new_header=true

Its time for me to write to GR and ask them if they can help.

Kathryn, I did not do anything, click anything or whatever. I just got up one morning, turned on my computer, clicked to access Goodreads and everything had changed. Certainly not as a result of any actions on my part. That's one of the reasons I'm annoyed - absolutely no warning, a completely arbitrary action on the part of GR. But hey, who cares about the users? Certainly not GR! Grrrrr!!!!!

Yes - it is good to give feedback, I guess - and then what GR does with the information is up to them!

Ace wrote: "Kathryn wrote: "Ace wrote: "Michael wrote: "On the second page of the survey there is a link at the top of the page. If you click on that a new tab will open up with the new navigation thingy majig..."

Ace, that is very strange - your URL without the spaces is the same URL I am using where I see the new navigation! So maybe contacting GR support is the way to go!

MaryG2E wrote: "Kathryn wrote: "And I still don't know how MaryG2E's GR could look different unless she'd clicked on the link in that thread!!! Unless GR has been doing some fiddling which has affected the appeara..."

And MaryG2E, that is also really bizarre! No idea why yours looks different without you doing anything! I wonder if what you're seeing is the new navigation or something else... You could try contacting GR as well, I guess. They might want a screenshot of what you're seeing.

message 177: by B the BookAddict (last edited Feb 25, 2016 09:01AM) (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Leonie, you would reckon that the link would work for users all types of users i.e. on all types of hardware. Not the debacle they had when the typeface was recently changed and users of different systems/hardware had different versions.

I think mostly I feel for the GR tech staff as someone somewhere will always have a grumble about a new rollout. It must be hard to try to satisfy all of the people all of the time. I'm pretty happy to just adjust to the new things because I'd hate GR to do a dummy spit and decide to give us just a Amazon version of reviews and that's all.

message 178: by MaryG2E (new)

MaryG2E (goodreadscommaryg2e) | 934 comments I would like to put my two bobs' worth in about something that really irks me about the Goodreads site. That is the poor cursor control that I always experience while trying to click on elements like 'Shelves', and comments. On my computer, the screen leaps up after a couple of seconds. Just now, I clicked on one of my TBRs to indicate it is a book club title for me, and I've accidentally clicked 'Currently reading' because the graphic 'travelled'.

My other gripe is that I find it impossible to edit or delete comments from the status upgrade field on books I am currently reading.

Also dates - why oh why do the GR dates default to California time so readily. Sometimes I've finished a book before I've actually started it, thanks to GR's USA-centric model. For anyone living in other parts of the world it is extremely frustrating.

So Goodreads can piss-fart around with making the site look prettier, but it is not actually more user-friendly, for me at least.

Why don't you go to the Feedback group Mary and ask your questions/air your gripes?

message 180: by B the BookAddict (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Mary, My other gripe is that I find it impossible to edit or delete comments from the status upgrade field on books I am currently reading.

Yeah, this annoys me to!

Are you sure it's not your 'cursor speed', you can alter it in Windows. Julie, the techie wizard, taught me that. I was having heaps of probs with it before then.

Gotta say, I do probably feel like you do in regards to fixing problems instead of 'making pretty'. But I'm not roused enough to bother to get incensed about it these days, I know it won't change.

message 181: by Marianne (last edited Feb 28, 2016 12:00PM) (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9995 comments I think I know what Mary means about the cursor. It's not cursor speed, but that the page seems to take a bit of time to "settle" (my own term), so you click on something, but it's still in the process of "settling" and where you have clicked actually is a different link, so you end up not where you wanted to go. I guess the page is not quite finished downloading and when it is all downloaded, things have shifted. Frustrating! Patience required.

I see this on sites like Dymocks too, when I am posting reviews there. The other bizarre thing on their site (I have let them know) is that when you click on a book, it adds it to your cart. When you rate it, another copy into your cart. When you post a review, another copy into your cart. So when I have reviewed three books, there are nine in my cart, none of which I am going to buy as I already own them, LOL!!

That's a huge error on Dymocks part Marianne. They should fix that.

The "settling" thing you talk about happens to me on a number of sites on my iPad including Amazon but not I think on Goodreads. It can be annoying if you are in a hurry:)

I agree, Bette and Phyrnne - occasionally I read the comments in the Feedback thread because they can be amusing, but they can also be rather vitriolic at times! And if you're going to post, you need to be a bit careful in what you say - you never know what you might start!

It is incredible the overreaction and misunderstandings that take place in any online forum - you have to be so careful of what you say as it can come out quite different to your intention.

MaryG2E (goodreadscommaryg2e) | 934 comments This morning I have started my computer, gone to the Goodreads site to see what has been happening with Aussie Readers' posts, and I find that my layout has reverted to the OLD format. Just when I was getting used to the new one. Again, no reasons given, no notifications...I don't understand.

It seems to me that participating in this delightful forum, Aussie Readers, is enjoyable DESPITE Goodreads, not because of it. All we can do is grin and bear it, my fellow readers....

message 192: by Ace (new)

Ace (aceonroam) I got it!!!

Finally.

I don't mind it, but there is a bug on the notifications box on the Webpage version.

If I open drop-down notifications panel and then enlarge the screen to read the notifications in a larger print then the box disappears and I have to open it again. Inevitably this means I am putting my finger on the advertising box (and earning click money for GR) in the process. It is a matter of training myself to enlarge the screen first, then open the notifications. This is happening on my tablet and phone where I don't have a mouse to 'hover' over the notifications icon.

On my PC webpage version, if I use the mouse to hover over the notifications box by accident, the notifications are immediately marked as "read" so when I go back, I can't see which ones are new anymore.

Not major, but now that this has happened, I see that I rely on my notifications a lot! I never noticed this before.

Yes I think they're working on it Ace. I've found the same when I am on my phone. Most annoying!

Brenda, since I wrote up my bugs above, I've noticed that no matter which drop down list is enabled on the page, the finger-pinch or unpinch doesn't work. I confirmed this morning when I was adding books to a new shelf I created and when I went to zoom in to tick the shelf name, the zoom wasn't working.

I hope they fix this soon as it is a significant function that many people will miss once they are converted to the "new menu" version.
