So good to see you, Nancy! I feel as if all of our little ducklings are falling into line.

Hey NJ!! We're so glad you're here!

Julie promised (I think) to come over after tax time, shouldn't we be hearing from her?
Dave and Lorraine have settled in on Delphi and they plus others like Kate may think the number of posts here is too daunting (from their comments on the AOL board). Carol (Coziann C) isn't comfortable on Goodreads, nor is Rebecca. Kit hasn't had time to check Goodreads out yet. We hope Margie is feeling well enough to come over soon. I know I am missing a few more. We miss them!!

Kate

Yes, Julie did say she would be over after tax time.
I wonder if there's a way to make the board easier to dive into if you're a newbie coming to an already established board. I've joined some boards, like Readers and Reading, that while not a veteran group, was started before M/T. It is daunting to see topics with hundreds of posts in them, but my style is to do a little at a time and start with a thread that captures my interest. That Goodreads Feedback group is an example, that thing is huge. I don't ever expect I'll get unread posts down to zero, but I pop over every now and then just to see what's being talked about and if I can learn anything. I would think this board would be more manageable, but you tell me what would be a help that is within board moderator control.

Carol, I'm going to run for cover after typing this, but you could tell newbies where the MAR button is. That would give them a fresh start with the board.
Kate

kate, don't tell carol that i said this, but i agree with you..LOL
i think the massive volume of postings we generated the first week here could/would be intimidating.
that level of posting has slowed down to a more manageable number but to come in as new- i'd MAR

LOLOL. I bow to the masses on this one. If people think this will help I will hold my nose while I type it. ;-) People can always go back and read earlier posts in the thread if they want, I suppose. Now to find where to put it so it will be read early. Cheryl, any ideas?

Carol, are you and I the only ones with a delete button?

I'd leave a couple of topics untouched because they offer some great hints on navigating around the site. Without these, someone just coming on will really be lost. However, I think that many of the threads, i.e., past birthdays, previous month's reading lists, etc., could certainly be deleted after a period of time. Dan/AZ

I think the idea of a folder entitled "New Posters start here" is great with the more useful tips distilled into a few posts and perhaps a commitment to post something new there every week so the folder remains among the top ones that come up when you first access the board.
And I agree that the MAR button should be among those suggestions for newbies. Most of us had the advantage of coming here when opening Unread Topics didn't lead to hundreds of posts. The great thing about Goodreads is that the posts remain, so if a newbie decides, after becoming comfortable, to explore the past, they can go back and look even after Marking All Read.

Carol and Cheryl - I'll look up that group and post it here so you can check it out.
Another thought, when the posts in a thread "go to two pages" people unfamiliar with sorting them by date can find it takes a couple of clicks to get to the "bottom" or the list. Long threads like "what are you reading now" are a bit unwieldy. We could start new threads and move the larger ones to archives when they reach a certain post count except in cases where it is a one topic thread like a spoiler on a book?
and yes, Carol, this post probably should be moved to navigating tips or something else. the non-threaded girl is stretching her wings.. :)

I would also suggest that the monthly upcoming book postings be put there as we post the next months updated listings. Trying to update those old posts with the newly found upcoming books would be hard and we could start out fresh every month. Just a suggestion of course.

You and I are the only ones able to delete anything other than our own posts. I am inclined not to do any deleting of posts until there is strong support for the idea especially since we have some other options now for organizing and condensing, and keeping the threads that are mostly one-time interest, like the birthday threads, out of the way. I think the main reason not to delete is that threads meander, albeit the birthday threads less than others, and I'd rather keep them all than cherry pick the bday wishes from the other content and have to repost them elsewhere.
I have another thought if people agree, and that is to make the Tips to New Users folder one that is closed to posting, so that we can keep it from running amok. Not sure about this and it means there needs to be some other method of collecting feedback so you all can tell us what works and what doesn't. the alternative is to keep it open but to have me or Cheryl move a post out of it once we've made a decision on the comment.
While you are mulling over this idea I'll look at the groups suggested to see how they archive n'stuff.

Did finish Handle with Care by Jodi Picoult. Nancy

I agree, we should keep all of the posts, and archive them regularly (as it is practical) and, whatever is easier for keeping the tips folders easy to find and utilize sounds good to me. Thanks for doing this organization for us!!
