The Not a Book Club Club discussion
Introduction & Welcome Thread
Welcome Jack. A lot of us simply read too much for 1 book/discussion to be enough, but we are usually reading at least something every month so we might be a good a alternative pick as well.
Lately we tend to be mostly new release stuff, but as you can see right now we're also doing that full Harry Potter reread.
Feel free to hit up the Suggest a book for a group read thread too if there is something you want to read/discuss and see if others might be interested in joining you.

@Jack - Howdy and welcome...I'm new here as well. We'll stick together.@Rob - Ah...it's always interesting to see how people spell it. If I had known the books would have "gone anywhere" I would have picked something easier ;-)
@Dara - Thanks, glad to be here.
Thanks for the welcome, guys! The more I look through the pages, the more I can't decide which read I'm going to do. Too many choices! Do I want to re-read something or read something new? I'm the type of reader who tries to keep up with new books as much as possible, but I've never actually had people to truly talk about Harry Potter with before. Decisions, decisions.
The Harry Potter threads have been very entertaining so far. I've been doing the reread along with my girlfriend who's never finished the series so I'm pretty far ahead but definitely plan on keeping up with the discussions. So far, every discussion I've been a part of has been excellent. Good conversations, good insights, lots of fun.
Welcome Kieron. Yeah you can go crazy with the groups. There are a lot of really good ones. Too many to participate in them all.
I find it best to just pick a few that work for me (mainly this group and Sword & Laser).
This is a pretty small group, but there are some pretty active members so it's fairly lively but not so much as to be overwhelming hopefully.

Well and if we're not reading stuff you're interested in bessides Black Prism, you can always try to drum up interest for a book you want to read in the Suggest A Book thread.
Hey folks! I'm Andy, an avid sci-fi/fantasy reader from New Jersey, U.S.A. I heard about this through another group where someone mentioned you'd be reading Ancillary Sword here. Looks like a good group from what I can tell so far - definitely my kinds of books being discussed, and I like the way you've got the discussions organized by series. Looking forward to participating!
Heh. That was probably me mentioning it, at least if that group was Sword and Laser.
Welcome again.

I believe it was you, Rob. Thanks!

I came to the Not a Book Club Club for the Ancillary Sword discussion.
I stayed for the cookies.
Pass the jar or prepare to face my wrath, fellow newbies!

Your best bet is to refer to the Group Bookshelf, sorted by the date started column, for all upcoming reads.
We'll be starting Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix tomorrow (which is when I'll be posting the discussion threads)

Hi guys. I came here after seeing the group in Alex's updates, and being intrigued by the name.I like the idea of people choosing books, plus I'm an SFF fan, so that's good (I tried the Goodreads choice awards group, but the books just didn't work for me).
I just wish I'd joined earlier so I could've started with the HP re-read. :/
Still, better late than never. Looking forward to having a great time here!
Hi, my name is heather and I found this group accidently and thought it would be good for me to expand my reading into other books that I may not know about.
Rob wrote: "Welcome Heather. What sort of books do you usually read?"Hi Rob - I mostly read Science Fiction and Fantasy. I just recently read the City of Stairs by Robert Jackson Bennett, and love it! It is nice to fall into a world that is complete and want to know more. I saw the books that were being discussed were along the same lines of what I am intrested in and excited to particpate in your group. Next on my list is by Patrick Rothfuss, The Slow Regard of Silent Things, as soon as I get my book in the mail this week.
Wave Heather - welcome to the group. I'm sure you'll love Slow Regard of SIlent Things...one of my favorite characters.
Hi Everyone, I was lurking around the S&L page and found this group. Honestly I'm a little sad that I just found out about it and missed some the great books that have been read/re-read in the past (ahem...Harry Potter) but I am looking forward to diving into the next reads!
Welcome Michelle. There is a lot of overlap in membership of people here and S&L, though I'm probably the main person guilty of linking to this group.
I try not to do it too often though. Glad you found us. Welcome!

Alex wrote: "Welcome! Feel free to straggle into the earlier reads if you like. We're pretty active and will probably respond."Indeed. I had a good time being the last man in on some of those threads. Was still cool to see everyone's comments even though I wasn't here for it.
And welcome!
Awesome, thanks. I'll keep that in mind! I've been meaning to read a lot of the books that have already been read so that could be a likely possibility.
Hello everyone! My name is Anja. I just started following Sword and Laser and VF live and fell in love with discussions. Upon realizing that my favourite discussion leaders were also having fun here, I wanted to join in!
I was raised a Fantasy nerd but have always wanted to get more into science fiction. Being slavic and an academic, my favourite sci fi author is Isaac Asimov. My favourite fantasy author is Terry Pratchett. Thankfully, both are prolific enough to keep me occupied for the rest of my life. But some variety would be nice to fill the gaps.
Can't promise participating every round, it depends on how much I have on my plate but looking forward to popping in now and again!

Welcome Anja. Glad you found us. Feel free to try to get us to work with your schedule too by suggesting something over in the Suggest a book for a group read.
It tends to be hit or miss, but that's how most of the stuff we read gets scheduled. People keep suggesting stuff until a few people agree to read something.
And don't worry about participating. The idea is to pop in and out as you have time. I'm not participating in either of the current reads and I created the place. :-P

Hello, I am new! My name is Paul. Love fantasy. Have not read great deals of science fiction, would like to change that. But love to read. Need an excellent group to discuss reads with. This looks like it. Looking forward to it. So hello everyone.
Welcome Paul. This group seems to read more fantasy than sci-fi, but we do read some. Some of us more than others. If nothing else I'm sure you can get some good suggestions to hep expand your sci-fi reading.
What sort of sci-fi stories do you like/want to read?

Hello RobThat is something I am open to. I read a lot of fantasy and I do get hooked in that direction. Being involved with people who know more than me and who I know will discuss science fiction that is worth reading is a lovely thought. And what an excellent quick response Rob, very impressed already.
Also Rob reading fantasy till it comes out my ears is something I do well. So this is something I am looking forward to doing with this group very, very much.

Haha. Well I happen to be on the computer at work and I get email notifications. We're a small group and I've been told a bit intimidating to new members, so I try to be welcoming.
I'm a big fantasy person myself and I tend to favor the lighter space opera type of sci-fi myself.
Off hand I'd recommend the Expanse series starting with Leviathan Wakes, or something by John Scalzi. Maybe Old Man's War or Fuzzy Nation.
If you're into computers video games: Snow Crash and Ready Player One are two of my favorites there.
And if you read comics/graphic novels at all, you should really consider Saga, Volume 1.

Thank you Rob, that is much appreciated and very good of you. I have advice within minutes :-). I will check out the space opera ones and take it from there. Pleased to be here Rob, over the moon already.
