I dont believe him not answering questions is a good reason not to read his books anymore, grow up.

i agree with u Valeria but still can't blame them because i felt disappointed too. I know it's not
logic to answer all those questions but at least answer the half of them or he could answer the first 20 questions and so one, but he said i'll be for the whole day and he answered less than 20! ... still, disappointed, yes, but i cant stop reading to him :)

Sure, i mean he shouldnt have agreed to answer our questions if he wouldnt be able to read/answer them but well... thats just how it is and its not a reason to stop reading his work

message 654: by Ciprian (new)

Ciprian Alexandru | 2 comments Why is this thread even open anymore? It's April 4th! Let it go, moderators!
And to you, Paulo, yes, it is a shame you didn't answer and it is a greater shame that you acted as if there was nothing you could do!
Do the math! It couldn't have taken you more than a minute to answer a question (I'm talking about an average time here!). And even if we ignore the repetition of many subjects, it still would have taken you only 10 hours to answer ALL of them. THAT would really mean "MOST OF THE DAY"!
Now, of course you remain a great writer, a great thinker, a great soul. But greatness can fade in the shadow of a useless negligence. 500 unanswered questions may seem nothing compared to the bestselling miracle you've been bragging about these days on Facebook and Twitter. But you may want to think if that is really the case. And you don't even have to give a public answer to that question. :)
Stay happy! God bless!

Saif | 2 comments Good Evening Mr.Coelho,
My name is saif and am from jordan, i have read the alchemist twice so far and oh my what a book :). Now my question is how would it be different if santiago was a "She" instead of a "He"??

message 660: by [deleted user] (new)

In the Alchemist, you mention Abraham. The King of Salem talks of him as someone he had helped but never met again. Is there any significance in the name? Is there more to this?

message 665: by Vibhu (new)

Vibhu Ashok (vibhuashok) | 2 comments Dear friends, there is no need to be disappointed by Paulo Coelho not answering our questions...because I can see in his books, answer lies in them :)

Moreover before deciding to stop reading his books, just think about who will benefit by this ?
May be it is our ego...that is making us to feel like that.

I can see there is one more benefit by joining this discussion, that is we came to know each other...

well for me it is win - win situation :)

Sending love to you all

I do agree, absolutely, but it still makes me feel hurt and disappointed, because I've been waiting for this kind of opportunity for a very long time. I won't stop reading his books, but I will definitely change my opinion about Paulo. This is not the way how to treat your fans, And people who respect you.

Dear Tamara,
I can relate with you on this, for me also Paulo Coelho is inspirational figure, and disappointment occurs when we do not get expected response, but somehow I feel that, as we do not stand at his place, so unaware of his circumstances...

May be he acted in this way, because of something...so let us keep loving him as we always do :)

Kali (kalimadden) | 2 comments Hi GoodReads,

Please why aren't the answers made visible to everybody as in a true discussion or community forum?

There have been no further communications other than the original invitation to join and I am unable to find where Paulo's comments have been published so that an entire community might benefit from the replies.

Puzzled and disappointed.

Kali

Just have to make a comment here. I am ONE of the people who said they will not be reading Mr. Coelho's work any more, and while you may think it is childish (you have a right to your opinion, even if it's ridiculous), think of it this way: why would any author agree to do this if he was not going to respond to all of the messages. I mean, duh...not difficult to figure out that he did not have to agree to do it. However, if you or anyone else treats a person with some talent who got a few books published as a person incapable of doing any wrong, again, that is your right.
Best Wishes to you.

Renish Adesra | 1 comments Hello sir,

How can you relate yourself to the characters in your novels so that you can think like them. Even as myself I get confused as what to say during some conversations. How can you do that with, virtually another person, a character of your novel. As a reader I anticipate what they will do next or what will happen to them. As a writer how do make up your mind on what they would do.

message 687: by Ladyyou13 (new)

Ladyyou13 | 1 comments Hello Sir;
5 years ago,I started a painful journey into the dark world of depression...
I crossed every possible road of self-destruction and basically drowned in the Abyss of despair, loss and self-loathing...
However, that wasn't the end of my journey, for I suddenly stood up for what's left of my twisted soul and nourished it again as you would do with with a newborn !
Currently, I've been thinking that the only way to avoid throwing myself back into the world of darkness is to empty my mind completely from the past in a sheet of paper...with a pen !
I feel that need to write my story !
Not to the world(For the moment); ONLY for myself ! To celebrate my newborn soul !
And for that, I seek your advice : Should I really do this ?
Your thoughts will be deeply appreciated.
Much admiration and respect; from
my heart to yours Sir. :)

message 691: by Vasant (new)

Sebastian Vasant (dirtypagemaster) | 3 comments Senor Paulo
Thanks for doing this. I remember reading The Alchemist as a kid, then Valkyries I think, but my favorite quote is, "There's no point in trying to explain why i [evil] exist. You can tell yourself that I am God's way of punishing himself for having in an idle moment decided to create the universe" from Down by the River Piedra. Do you think we've made too much a human out of God...in which case does god need forgiveness for her sins, just as much as we need forgiveness for ours? Is that our job as humans, to forgive God for our existence? p.s. don't take the question too seriously, it's just a brainteaser

message 692: by Vasant (new)

Sebastian Vasant (dirtypagemaster) | 3 comments My questions are two-fold; what is your most and least favorite book of yours and of all time and what are the worst and best quotes you know?

message 693: by Vasant (new)

Sebastian Vasant (dirtypagemaster) | 3 comments I think we can all agree that the alchemist is a quintessential book of yours but I think I actually like "The Devil and Miss Prym" better. Do you believe in true evil and how would you define it in a world where the lines are not so easily drawn as they are in fiction?

message 694: by Mona (new)

Mona (mona_eldeeb) | 1 comments I read the alchemist 4 years ago and it had a real impact on me and the way I see my life. What struck me was the close resemblance of some of your thoughts and some of the Islamic principles, regarding belief in faith and the urge to focus on what you're doing and letting go of the results as long as good intentions are there. Have you ever considered reading about Islam, the holy book "Quran" for example or the biography of our prophet "Muhammad"
Have a nice day :)
