Why did Eddy kill Nelson Rutledge?

I don't understand why he did it! And how did he think he was going to get away with killing Tate?

I don't know why he killed Nelson either. I thought of that but I think maybe because he was thwarted in his killing of Tate, he just fired at Nelson. I really did not want to believe Nelson was involved in the plotting of Tate's murder because he acted the part of a great father so well. Loved, loved, loved Tate…would have died if he was killed.
