Leticia (leticiatoraci) Thanks YouKneeK, CBRetriever and Anna.
I'm terrible with spreadsheets. Is there a way you can count the books you read in it?

message 1402: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6144 comments yep, put a 1 in the read column and then highlight the filled portion of the column plus a few extra rows and then click on the Autosum symbol and it will total the books you've read. I've added a TBR column for the books I own and a Nope column for the ones I'll never read (the Dr Who book).

message 1403: by Anna (last edited Dec 28, 2021 11:25AM) (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments If you only want to know how many you’ve read, I strongly suggest that you use the mod account method! It takes two clicks. (One to go to the thread through the link above and another to click the link in that thread.)

edit: Unless the books aren’t marked as read on GR, obviously.

message 1404: by Leticia (last edited Dec 29, 2021 09:10AM) (new)

Leticia (leticiatoraci) I see, I clicked on read and it showed 118 books in common and read, but I'll take a look at the spreadsheet later to confirm it.

message 1405: by YouKneeK (new)

YouKneeK | 1412 comments In case anybody is looking for more detail on how to access and work with the group shelf spreadsheet, maybe add a few really simple statistics for yourself, I did a 20 minute video tutorial.

I’m not sure how helpful it will be, and it's aimed at beginners, but I posted the link over in the “Help! How do I [Do That Thing] on Goodreads?” topic here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

message 1406: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3683 comments Thank you! I’m a total beginner with spreadsheets. I have to use one that was created before my time but it doesn’t do calculations, so it’s fairly straightforward. Anything with calculations is beyond me.

message 1407: by Leticia (last edited Dec 30, 2021 12:54AM) (new)

Leticia (leticiatoraci) That's very helpful YouKneeK, thanks! I looked at the video and now my number of books read is the more realistic number of 87. I added a TBR column to add the books I want to prioritize too.

message 1408: by YouKneeK (new)

YouKneeK | 1412 comments Diane, the calculations do get a lot easier once you get some practice with them, and after the syntax starts to make sense. But they can look intimidating when you first just see a bunch of symbols and letters that don’t seem to mean anything.

That’s great, Leticia! I’m really glad it was helpful.

message 1409: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments Leticia, I checked with the mod account, and you do have 118 group books marked as read on Goodreads. If you've actually only read 87 of them, I wonder what the other ones are and why they're marked as read?!

This would drive me crazy, I do checks like this for my own shelves all the time, and if I can't find the reason for the difference, my brain explodes. As you can tell, so far I've always found the culprit :D

I'm up to 154. I own a few more group books, but need to get around to reading them...

Goodreads shows a lot of books I initially posted as 'to read' as 'read'. Why it does that I have no idea.

message 1412: by Anna (last edited Dec 30, 2021 07:47AM) (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments Leticia, I'm wondering if you added them to Goodreads in a way that makes it think you've already read them? For example if you go to a book page, and add it to a non-exclusive shelf, it'll automatically mark it as read. A book has to be on at least one exclusive shelf. If you haven't added any of your own, the built in exclusive shelves are Read, Want to read and Currently reading. Read is the default shelf for any books added, unless you specify another one. So if you have a shelf called "Maybe" for example, and you want to add books to that, you'll have to either make that shelf exclusive, or add a book as Want to read first, and then Maybe.

GR Help about exclusive shelves: https://help.goodreads.com/s/article/...

message 1413: by Leticia (new)

Leticia (leticiatoraci) It was probably that, I'll look out for duplicates marked as read and take care next time I add new books.

Anushree | 14 comments I am a newbie, but this club introduced me to many underrated books

message 1415: by Maarit (new)

Maarit | 136 comments With the help of Mod Account and Anna, I finally noticed that I'm past the 100 books read mark, yay! It happened some time during last year, I just missed it for some reason.

I've read 109 books so far, mod account showed 107, but I know that for me it misses The Fellowship of the Ring (all books in one edition vs. that only one) and Grimm Brothers (not bothered to mark that one up).

This year I plan to get above 120 books read, so slow and steady it goes :) I'll never get to the all books read from the shelf mark anyways, since I've DNFd a few books from the shelf already.

As for what to bring to the clubhouse, hmm... Maybe some of that new Fazer Caramel Popcorn chocolate and some Fazer Dark Chocolate with taste of Cherry Truffle, which is also a new flavour. Hope you enjoy!

message 1416: by Gabi (new)

Gabi | 3441 comments Congratulations, Maarit!

(I would count DNF's as read from the shelves as well - you gave it a try, that's all that counts - I'm doing the same)

message 1417: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3683 comments That’s grand, Maarit! And you better hide your treats from me, or I’ll it it all myself!

I would also encourage counting DNFs.

message 1418: by YouKneeK (new)

YouKneeK | 1412 comments Congrats Maarit!

message 1419: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments I also have The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales marked as unread, because I can't be 100% if I've read every single story in it. I'm not particularly looking forward to actually reading it in the future though, so I may mark it as read at some point :)

message 1420: by YouKneeK (new)

YouKneeK | 1412 comments There is so much repetition in that collection that I kind of feel like you should get full credit just for reading a portion of it, because the portion you read is probably repeated in some manner throughout the rest. I spread it out over 5 months back in 2017, got through it all, and I still haven’t fully recovered. :)

message 1421: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments YKK, yeah that's why I don't want to read it :/

message 1423: by HeyT (new)

HeyT | 506 comments I read like 50% of the grimm's book before I had to take a break I may try to read like one story a day just to be done with it but omg it is so repetitive I was like am I crazy or did I reread this page five times.

message 1424: by YouKneeK (new)

YouKneeK | 1412 comments LOL, yes. And then you finish one repetitive story to see a new variation of the same repetitive story. My strategy was to read a little bit before bed, after putting down my main book for the night. It was sure to put me to sleep if I wasn’t tired already!

message 1425: by HeyT (new)

HeyT | 506 comments I was just updating my personal SFFBC spreadsheet with next month's picks and checking off what I've read this month and I've now hit 200.

Bonnie | 1280 comments I also hit 200 this month.
Thinking it over... It feels great!
It took a lot of reading and a pandemic.

message 1434: by Hank (new)

Hank (hankenstein) | 1231 comments 200! We might have needed an addition on the clubhouse but of course it is magically expanding.

Meredith | 1783 comments Congrats HeyT and Bonnie, that's amazing!

message 1436: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina | 375 comments Congrats to 200!!!

Also, love the idea of magical expansion, Hank! Could we wish for a whirlpool and Spa for the 200-club area? (It would be a nice incentive as I still need another 39 books)

message 1437: by Hank (new)

Hank (hankenstein) | 1231 comments It is cold here in Colorado right now so I am completely on board for the Spa!

Yes, heated pools and spa services for the 200+!

message 1439: by Mikael (new)

Mikael (mike_no1) | 18 comments I think i did this correctly, 115. I had to really go back in time thinking on some of the titles.

message 1440: by YouKneeK (new)

YouKneeK | 1412 comments That’s an impressive first count, Mikael! I think when I first joined the group in 2014, I had some ridiculously low number like 12. :) I was a latecomer to SF&F though.

message 1441: by Kaili (new)

Kaili | 39 comments 12! You had been doing much better than me! I only have 9! >.<
I did just start reading avidly again after a 12-year hiatus.
Goodness, that makes me feel old. T-T

message 1442: by YouKneeK (new)

YouKneeK | 1412 comments Haha Kaili, sounds like you’re in a similar place reading-wise as I was a few years ago. Sometimes life causes favorite hobbies to fall by the wayside for a while, but it’s always fun to rediscover them!
