The second book by Brent Weeks for sure (I have read one and that was enough) … well … and I thought about some of the Scalzis- but there is no help, when he gets voted in the polls ;) ) - other than that I have not yet decided.
Some because of the price perhaps, some of the classical Fantasy perhaps.

Jennifer Wheeler I’ve read 34 on the list. However, I already own a whole bunch of the others, just haven’t read them yet 😅

Sabrina | 375 comments As of today, I'm at 120! There were so many awesome books that would have remained undiscovered if not for this group, so on to the next goal: 150 :-)

Still less than 50%. LOL

Hank (hankenstein) | 1231 comments Go triple digits Sabrina and Soo! I totally agree, there are so many of these books I would not have given a second glance but ended up enjoying. Of course there were a few duds (looking at you Here and Now and Then) but generally all great.

I just looked at my ratings for the group shelf: the ratio of books I liked/books I could have done without is roughly 2/3 to 1/3. That's a good ratio.

message 963: by Trike (new)

Trike The Collapsing Empire gets me an immediate 167, since I’d already read it. 😊

Now if you guys can just pick the rest of this year’s books from my Read shelf, that’d be great. 🙃

*this is an archaic slang term for alcohol in the US.

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments Allison, we won't be drinking that, but we can make fondue! I'll bring the bread.

(And broccolini. I will always bring the broccolini.)

Right. Definitely not drinking what is for me imported Swiss wine. Why would I do that?

(Bring two bottles please, Sabrina, I'll pay you back.)

message 972: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments lol, you can drink it! I'll stick to the broccolini XD

message 973: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina | 375 comments LOL - I like the term hooch. Of course we can drink it aaand make fondue ;-) in fact, I just sat down to eat fondue.

But what are Broccolinis? I can only think of the green legume...

CBRetriever | 6144 comments Allison wrote: "Woohoo! Finally someone remembered the hooch*!

no longer used except by those in their 90s and older. Booze is the slang term for most of the US now. Grandfather-in-law used to run hooch across the Canadian border to the US.

I'm up for some white wine myself especially if it's from the Alsace.

message 975: by Gabi (new)

Gabi | 3441 comments I could add some lovely red wine from my home soil.

message 976: by YouKneeK (new)

YouKneeK | 1412 comments I can’t offer any hooch, but I do have a fridge full of different flavors of La Croix and Waterloo (sparkling water brands) if there are any other carbonated water addicts out there.

I think some people use them in mixed drinks? The only thing I know about mixed drinks is the time I tried to put the Lime La Croix in the Coconut La Croix and drank it all up, because every time I saw those two things next to each other in the fridge I started singing the stupid song and finally had to try it. It was drinkable and I didn’t have to call the doctor, but it wasn’t anything to sing about…

message 977: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments Sabrina wrote: "But what are Broccolinis? I can only think of the green legume"

It is green, but not a legume! A cross between broccoli and gai lan, which is also called Chinese broccoli, and is heavenly. Broccolini is as close to gai lan as it gets here in Finland.

YouKneeK, aren't you around ATL? Who's bringing the sweet tea if you aren't??

Also LOL at mixing seltzers! I've never tried that, but it sounds like I'm better off investigating these wines. Gotta do quality control, you know ;-)

To bring this around, and keep my mind from wandering to the liquor cabinet (it's been a looooong week!) I'm rather slow right now. I think I've only read 4 books so far this year, so I'm not quite at 120 yet, which is I guess the limit we've determined to have access to the bar. This is good incentive!

message 981: by YouKneeK (new)

YouKneeK | 1412 comments I am, but I'm neither a tea nor coffee drinker, so you’d be better off relying on somebody who knows how to pick out some good sweet tea!

I’m currently at 155 from the group shelf. I read 35 last year, which was more than my usual 31 (which I somehow hit consistently in 2016, 2017, and 2018), but I may have trouble even breaking even with 24 this year based on my planned reads for this year.

message 982: by Kaa (new)

Kaa | 1548 comments I am at 113, getting close to bar access! But I don't drink, so when I get there (this year hopefully) I'll bring the coffee. I have a friend who roasts his own coffee, and it is fantastic. (I lived in Portland for more than a decade, so I know what I'm talking about, lol.)

I don’t drink booze or joe or chai. Agua, por favor. Mountain Dew for lunch.

It has more caffeine! Plus, if you're drinking S-bucks, it's the only way to avoid burnt coffee.

But yes, it's nice to actually have other options that are actually tasty.

message 987: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3683 comments I live in the land of tea or instant coffee (Blech!) but my husband is Italian and a coffee snob. We do our best and travel to Italy regular to stock up again! When I make to 100 (this year maybe?) I will bring all sorts of goodies.

message 988: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments I was a little confused for a minute, and forgot which thread I was in. I was thinking surely Diane can't be nearing her 100th birthday. The confusion about which year it would happen did kind of point in that direction :D (I'm reading My Real Children, which takes place in Italy and has a demented mom, so maybe I was mixing things up a bit.)

I am currently 168 years old, hoping to turn 200 this year!

Yep. Dark coffee, dark fantasy, dark chocolate, dark red wine. Do they make dark Broccolini ?

Diane: I am going to Italy in Sept. What should I stock up on as I should be hitting the 130s by then?

message 991: by Anna (last edited Feb 14, 2020 01:33PM) (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments They make a broccolini shaped cauliflower, so surely the purple broccolini is coming soon! Maybe it's already out there in the world, just waiting to find its way to me.

I was joking, but apparently purple broccolini does in fact exist!

message 992: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina | 375 comments This thread cracks me up - I'm actually a very good drinker of pretty much everything be it sparkling water, white wine, mixed drinks, tea and especially well roasted coffee. On my one trip to Portland I was very pleasantly surprised how good the coffee was (and I think living near Italy I am quite spoiled).

So for me it seems that turning 120 has some big advantages, I can stay for as long as I want at the clubhouse bar with whoever turns up - I just hope they don't like beer ;-)

And if I ever see these broccolini - I'll defo try them!

message 993: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments If we ever have an irl club party, I'll be the one in the corner by myself, babbling about broccolini, while everyone else drinks and talks about books. Who am I kidding, I'll be home eating broccolini, while everyone else drinks at the party.

message 994: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3683 comments Anna, that looks suspiciously like what they call purple sprouting broccoli here in the UK! It is delicious!!

message 995: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3683 comments John, you should definitely get coffee from a little shop near the Pantheon in Rome or Pellini coffee if you are near Verona. For snacks, Taralini (small baked bread rings) are a weakness and grissini in general, “Sottoli” and Pomodorini for Anna (veggies in oil and vinegar), also cheese! And the real bologna called Mortadella.

message 996: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments Diane wrote: "Anna, that looks suspiciously like what they call purple sprouting broccoli here in the UK! It is delicious!!"

Yes I think it's the same stuff. I haven't seen it irl so I'm not sure, but broccolini is tenderstem broccoli in the UK, so it makes sense purple broccolini would also be called something else!

I'm going to shut up about leafy greens now.

Who would have thought that a place to tally books would have become a hub for clubhouse and fibrous vegetable discussions??

Raucous | 888 comments Anna wrote: "... but broccolini is tenderstem broccoli in the UK, so it makes sense purple broccolini would also be called something else!..."

Oh. Now I understand. It's called purple sprouting broccoli in the PNW as well. There are some varieties grown here that are well adapted to our wet and relatively mild winters. They'll be ready for harvest in a few weeks. Yum!

I'm at 94 club books now. I'm closing in on the chocolate table but I'll have a long wait for red wine to go with it.
