I personally have found 90% tough to achieve and maintain, i.e. I am not mainting it :) You only get to skip 2 books a year once you get to that level.

2011 is the year I apparently didn't agree with the larger group. I have 7 unread books from that year and can't seem to make myself pick any of them up.

For me it is fun to explore with the group either in the out of the way corners or the latest trends. I usually find something I like in all the books we read. I think I only gave one of our books 1 star although I have not read the Doctor Who book which I think Kim really did not have good things to say about.

It’s not great. It’s also not really Dr. Who. I kinda think Moorcock repurposed an existing story. My brief take: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 904: by Coralie (new)

Coralie | 106 comments I have been slack and have slipped back to 27 books not yet read. But I am reading two at the moment to bring my total back to 25. I would like to reduce to 20 by the end of the year. I have already read one of next month's (unless there is a dramatic turn around and Cuckoo's Egg wins the poll) but the other is not in either of the library's I use.

Pat the Book Goblin I’ve read 55 books on the list. Personally that’s a bad number for someone who’s a fantasy/sci-fi fan lol. I need to read newer stuff haha.

Bad? Or does it mean you have a solid foundation and sooooo many good books ahead of you!!

Barry (boprawira) | 64 comments As of 31 October 2019, I've read 75.

I'll see if I can get that number close to 80 by the end of the year (can't believe it's 2 more months!). I've got 12 books I own that are also on the group bookshelf.

message 915: by Hank (new)

Hank (hankenstein) | 1231 comments Great Job Meredith! I can't remember what our current prize is for triple digits but it definitely should be chocolote since you hit it on Haloween and I am sure we all have some left over ;)

Great Job YouKneek as well hitting 150! (found the post in another thread)

Thanks YouKneek!. Congrats to you as well. I felt it was definitely a worthy book for the milestone(s).

DivaDiane SM | 3683 comments I got 2 more under my belt!! With Blackout and A Night in the Lonesome October I’ve read 70 (I think, I’m pretty sure, it might be only 69)!

message 919: by Bookworm (new)

Bookworm (catsy2008) | 13 comments 24

But I didn't read any of them with the group and most likely will never read them all - a few are parts of a series. A few are books I know I won't like.

message 920: by Bruce (new)

Bruce I think only about 12 or 13. However, I have read several others by the same authors that are not on the list, i.e. Octavia Butler, Ursula K Le Guin, Arthur C Clarke, Asimov, Alan Moore.

message 921: by Eva (new)

Eva | 968 comments Wow - congrats to all the people who've read so many on the list!

I think I've read 42 on the group shelf so far, and many more are on my TBR. My goal is to read 8 shelf books in 2019 (I only joined the group in October) and have 3 more to go.

Does anyone know how the challenge switches in the new year - will the 2020 challenge automatically only count books I mark as read in 2020, or will have to create a new shelf to keep it from also counting my 2019 reads?

It will only count books you've read in 2020, assuming you mark the dates that you've read the book.

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 2801 comments Thanks to Lowell's spreadsheet, now I can say I read 124 books with 14 unread but already owned.

Total Sci Fi read: 65 of 143
Total Fantasy read: 59 of 140

So, do I get a chocolate or something?

message 924: by Eva (new)

Eva | 968 comments I think you totally get your (virtual) chocolate! :-)

Thank you for explaining, Sarah, that's really helpful and I'm glad I won't have to make a new 2020 shelf.

yes! come join us in the club house Silvana! haha! that's a great start Eva! You reminded me that tomorrow I want to get some year end stuff done, too

message 926: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 2801 comments Thanks Eva & Allison. I am liking the club house already, love what you triple-digit members done with the place!

In my mind, I have my own private room facing the ocean, with several fluffy reading nooks, endless supply of coconuts and coffee, plus my dog and my cat are with me.

message 928: by Karl (new)

Karl Burgess | 1 comments Just counted them. Looks like I'm at 57 without even reading from the list...just random reads over the past years. My reading interests jump around a lot, but I do often read Sci Fi.

Allison Hurd | 14234 comments Mod
That's pretty great for an unconcerted effort, Karl! Nice work! Hope you find more in the next year :)

message 930: by Alia (new)

Alia (aliarichards) I've read 21 / 297, most of which were read before joining the group

message 931: by Banshee (new)

Banshee (bansheethecat) | 207 comments I have only read 38 books from the group's shelf. Which basically means there are still a lot of awesome books that I will be able to read for the first time!

A lot of the books are on my TBR list for 2020 (49 to be specific - so that's gonna be fun!), so I'll do the challenge next year. I didn't participate this year, because I only joined Goodreads in January and I didn't have everything figured out at this point.

message 932: by Hank (new)

Hank (hankenstein) | 1231 comments Great starts both of you! I am certain you will find some gems in the ones you haven't read.

3 years and 3 months later I'm up to 76/213. Some I've read with the club, some I'd previously read and the club added them.

Currently (1-4-17) I'm at 83/225, or just under 37%."

Today on 1-1-18 I’m at 112/249, or 45%. Progress!

1-25-19 I’m at 125 (synchronicity!) of 275, or 45.4545%. Heh.

If I can double the number of books I read this year to 25, I might hit 50% by this time next year. That’s the holy grail percentage for me, since I’m never going to read some of the books on the shelf.

2012: 33%
2015: 35%
2016: 37%
2017: 45%
2018: 45%"

1-1-2020 and I just made a shelf specifically to count these. Duh, took me long enough. Currently at 166/297, or 55.8%. 😊

message 934: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3683 comments That’s really funny. Except I’m surprised you didn’t like Hyperion.

message 935: by Richard (new)

Richard (thinkingbluecountingtwo) | 447 comments Setting out my starting point for the year. Like Trike 50% is about as good as I can hope for and with 170/297 I’m starting the year on a triumphant 57%.
Now I just need to hold onto that, or even with the help of Kindle book sales filling my TBR pile, better it by the end of the year.
Hope everyone has a great reading year ahead of them.

Oh I like the idea of hitting 50%. I'm very close at the moment with 133/297 meaning I need to read all the books this year plus 15. I think I can do that.

By the end of 2020, the club bookshelf should have 319 books. 50% rounded up is 160, so you can make it by reading 27 this year.

message 942: by Kellyn (new)

Kellyn Thompson (authorkellyn) I've only read 20 on the list. But I didn't know The Underground Railroad (group read in may 2018) counted as sci-fi. Did I miss something? Is it because it has a literal underground railroad? Otherwise, I can't remember any sci-fi elements from the book.

It also fits under alternate history. It's true that the book is most commonly shelved under historical fiction, but there was a lot of interest in the SFF community, as you can see from the awards list on the GR page.

I think I've read 68 of the 297 book clubs selection but own 157, possibly more. Really going to push for 150 reads by the end of the year and 50% by Spring 2021.

Turns out that I've never read a Terry Pratchett or Neil Gaiman novel (besides Sandman). By years end that'll either still be true or I'll have read all their entries on the club's bookshelf.

It qualifies as SF, but just barely. It’s actually an excellent example of my categorization policy of “one single element” making a work eligible for either Science Fiction or Fantasy. (On the Fantasy side, I use Hamlet, because of his dad’s ghost which only appears in the opening scene.)

only 140 more to reach my goal ^^' (plus everything that'll win the polls from now on … oooookay, I guess 90% is a tiny wee bit far fetched)
