Partials Buddy Read!

Lolita, Bethany and I are starting a buddy read of Partials by Dan Wells on Monday, March 25th. Anyone is welcome to join us!

It's read at your own pace, so please post how far along you are and anything exciting in spoilers :) And most of all, have fun!!!

This one looks like fun! I still have to give my thoughts on Requiem! My little princess has been sick so I haven't had time. I'll request it from the library ASAP, but I will be behind. Maybe I should wait for the buddy read of part 2... Anyone know when 3 is going to be released? I hate waiting :(

I did the same thing, Jen. I started and didn't get very far in before I gave up. But, it wasn't really because it was terrible. I think I had way too many books to read at the time and that one had temporarily lost my interest so I put it on the back burner. But, I do hope that I am more into it this time around.

I am 9% in already. So far it is good. The world building is interesting, although still many questions remain at this point. I am not yet sure about the character, but I do like the main character already. She has shown some personality already and I think I am going to like her.
I think it's really strange to imagine a world like this where so many women are pregnant.

Also I am not yet sure what Marcus and Kira's relationship is yet. I think they have a love each other, but I am not entirely sure yet.

16% in already. The pace is a bit slow, but the story is okay so far. I do have a problem remembering the characters are teenagers for some reason, they sound more lik they are in their early twenties to me. Which is a bit confusing, because I have to remind myself every time they are teenagers. The relationship thing is made clear now. Not really anything spoilery to mention yet.

Lol early readers! I'm at 25% and I complete agree that they feel older, at least early 20s but maybe it's a function of the strange world they live in. It seems like they just have to grow up a lot faster. Wait till you get to 25% to read this, but (view spoiler)[ omg how is Kira going to get her hands on a live Partial to study? Especially with the doctor being unwilling to help. She's gutsy, I'll give her that much! (hide spoiler)]

I indeed think that because of the world they live in, they have to grow up faster and that's why they seem older, but every time it is mentioned that they are teenagers I still think "no way they sound much older". And they all get childrens when they are so young and the work they have to do while they are still so young, it's so different from our world.

I know, I'm the same way. The only time she sounded young was when she was talking to that girl who likes music, I forget her name, and talking about clothes and stuff...not sure if you're up to that part yet. But she sounded sooo different then to the rest of the book. It's almost like she's getting pulled between being a teenager and being an adult. It reminds me of that Brittany Spears song "I'm not a girl, not yet a woman" or something like that lol!

I am at 23% now and just read that part about the music. There was also the situation with (view spoiler)[ that person who was interragting the women she stays with. And she got really agressive and angry for no reason at all. Then i did think she was a teenager (hide spoiler)] It's a bit strange she sounded so different in both those situations and right after that part she was all like (view spoiler)[ I am going to find the cure and make sure the babies don't die anymore. And she was being totally serious and such (hide spoiler)]

Also i am not sure if I read over it or not, but what does RM stays for? That disease stuff?

I am at 25% now. I was actually a bit surprised (view spoiler)[ at how the doctor reacted. It was a bit onprofessional. Sure the partial war was terrible, but Kira has some good arguments and I think it's a good idea. Shouldn't researchers/dotcotrs keep an open mind and consider these things and not just act on emotions. Although I do really wonder how Kira is going to accomplish getting a Partial and what consequences it will have. And if that baby of her best friend is going to survive. And how this is going to be elaborate enough that there will be more books in this series. I mean so far it isn't excatly enough mertial to make a series out of it. So I assume a lot more is going to happen in this book. (hide spoiler)]

Yes, it felt like they were older to me too, but a lot of dystopians feel that way. Realistically, how many times can a teenager save the world? lol

I am at 29% now (view spoiler)[ I just read the moment where Kira and Marcus basically break up because she wants to save the world and he just wants to be safe. Strangely enough I think this is the only moment I really realized Marcus cared about Kira, while I didn't really feel their relationship before. I do get both their points of views. And then I tunred the page and saw that 3 months later text, I was like "What"? but I guess they needed that because all the preparations would be boring, but still it's a bit strange. I haven't read beyond that page yet (hide spoiler)] I am going to sleep now, more reading tomorrow :)

Yeah I assumed a lot more happens, but at this moment I really wonder what is going to happen, because I know a lor more is going to happen. Okay that sounds a bit strange.

I am 39% in now (view spoiler)[ They encountered a Partial already! I wonder what they will find out about it! I do think the book is a little bit too much story and too less attention for characters and world building. In the beginning there was quite some world building, but now that seems to go to the background a bit. And although I do get a sense of who Kira is, I have more trouble figuring out who the other characters are and why they do what they do. Also the part where they went over the bridges in search of a Partial was a bit confusing to me. I don't have a good idea of how the place looks where they are and I got confused at the number of bridges they encountered. I guess I will have to look up a map of Long Island and hope that gives some more insight (hide spoiler)]

48% read (view spoiler)[ The story is starting to get really interesting now Kira satrted analyzing the Partial. I have this theory that she will fall in love with the Partial. It also is obvious that the author knows quite a biot about research and such because some of Kira's thoughts are pretty complicated stuff. I really am looking forward to more interactions between Kira and the Partial and I am curious what she will find out about it. And what will happen after those 5 days. I also think it's a bit strange how all the humans blame all the Partials, while so far I never heard if all the partials attacked them or even if the Partials are organized at all. I mean if there are so many Partials it is more probable that not all Partials know everything and maybe there are a few that aren't evil. (hide spoiler)]

Funny, I think I was thinking some of the exact same things! I'm enjoying the story, but I agree that character development is taking a back seat, at least for the most part.

Yeah, this book is more about the action and the story as opposed to character development. I really noticed it more in the first half of the story.

I'm about 24% through my reread at the moment. (view spoiler)[ I completely forgot about the scrap mission they went on, and the bombing. I forgot about Tovar and Dolly the camel, too! This is why I love rereading books! So what do you guys think the biggest concern is? The Hope Act, The Voice, The Partials, or RM? Yeah, there's a lot to deal with in this oneq! (hide spoiler)]

OK 55% now (view spoiler)[ The plot is awesome so far, love that there appears to be SO MUCH MORE to the story about how RM got unleashed. I'm leaning toward believing Samm, the Partial, that they didn't unleash RM into the population, at least not knowingly. Clearly, there's some bigger conspiracy. I can't wait to find out what! Ooh, and it's cool how they can sense each other's feelings! I agree with Lolita, Samm and Kira are definitely going to get together, considering Marcus isn't being too supportive of her.

I did have a few problems with things: why was the Partial allowed to be present for a senate hearing? Seems odd, even if they're planning his demise.

Also, umm why is a teenage medical intern doing the most important research on a live subject ever? And how does she seem to have significant knowledge to be able to perform said research? And why is she ALONE, why doesn't she have anyone helping her, maybe those who are closest to the previous research? Either this is EXTREMELY important to the plot (ie it's all part of the evil senate's plan) or Wells totally just bit the bullet and we all just have to live with it. I'm hoping it's the former :)

Also, I found it a bit crazy that they were so anti keeping the Partial alive for the whole hearing, and then suddenly they switch and give her 5 days. Why 5 days? If you really believe it could help cure RM, then why set a timer on the research? Curing disease normally takes years of research. Again, unless the 5 days has some significance, which it may, I think it's pretty unrealistic.

LOL those bits were great, loved them!! Hmm tough call, I'm further ahead now so I have a little extra info, but I'd say (view spoiler)[ the Voice might not really be rebels and might be someone in the Senate trying to pull a fast one. The Hope Act is what will likely spur a rebellion at some point, but doesn't seem that important in the scheme of things. RM is the main problem at this point, because without curing it there is no future. A little bit earlier, I would've said the Partials were a big threat, but not after hearing Samm talk. Now I think they were happy to just let the humans exist apart from them. (hide spoiler)]

I was the most surprised with Samm in this story. I was expecting more of a robot when they described Partials, not a genetically perfect human. And learning that they are going extinct as well! WOW! I did not expect that! (hide spoiler)]

I agree that it is strange that the Partial was allowed to be present at a Senate meeting and why Kira does all this researhc stuff. It just doens't make sense. I mean even though it was dangerous getting a Partial, Kira has some solid arguments as to why they must study it and with more people they can do more study. And why the 5 day limit? They keep referring to it, but really why not study it as much as they can? Although they do have the risk of people finding out they have a Partial. It feels like they just choose a random number and stick to it.

Dan Wells really knows his stuff, because there is so much thought and logic around all the research stuff, but to be honest I can't really understand how Kira knows this stuff. I mean she is only 16, how can she have so much knowledge at that age. I am also wondering how their school system works? At which age do they specialize? From what was told about the 14 year old boy that just choose his direction I am assuming Kira also choose her specialization at 14, so in those 2 years, she learned this much? And even now she is only an intern, so why does she does this research. there must be people around with more knowledge.

Also it seems a bit stupid that they spend 11 years doing nothing, until only now some girl comes up with the idea of getting a Partial. Also if they Partials are really so awesome, why don't they get Samm back? Or maybe they don't want/need him back?

I also really want to know why they didn't plan on killing the human race, but basically they still did it. It's not like you can kill an entire race by accident (hide spoiler)]

I think this book is really a book you have to read in a few days, because else you forget pieces of what's going on. I am happy I have so much time to read, because I do think that without that this book would be more difficult to read through, it is pretty complicated and slow paced.

Totally agree with everything you said :) I think there may be answers to most of our questions by the end. At least I hope do! Yeah, books are way better if you can read them in just a few days in my opinion :)
