I don't watch much TV anyway...if a show isn't holding my interest I have no trouble turning it off. Movies, too. My hubby is a movie person, and I will usually start watching one with him but halfway through (or sooner) I'm picking up my book :)

Elle (louiselesley) TV and Movies are totally different with me. If I am a long time watcher and the series begins to get rubbish (eg. Chuck/Dexter) I have to continue watching it - it's like a car crash.

And movies. I am huge buff and I always watch a movie until the end incase it has redeeming features (most bad movies do)

Well... tv shows are different when you've been a long time viewer. Especially if you get attached to characters/actors. So I understand that.

w :) I would stop half way through, but it's kinda like I'm spending time on this - can't just throw it away. Otherwise it would be a big waste of time. Get it? For most others it's the opposite so like you waste time by reading rubbish. Ah well

Lizzy Lessard It really depends on it I bought it for myself or an author gave it to me for review. If an author gave it to me for review, I try to read at least 25%. If I bought it, I'll stop after the first chapter.

Karin Cox (wwwgoodreadscomkarin_cox) | 6 comments I rarely bother to read books that don't grab me in the first 20 pages or so. If I'm not into them by then, it is rare that I go on to like them. However, I almost quit on Life of Pi, and I'm glad I didn't.

I don't often find a book I can't finish. I did find one recently but I may well come back to that. I don't think I am in the right frame of mind for it.

I have started books, put them aside..."

*grins* Oh no, I can't finish a book I'm not enjoying (unless I've been sent it for review). I have too many tbrs to get to to continue with something I don't like. 70 page maximum, sometimes less if it's REALLY poor.

I give a series 3 episodes and if it isn't grabbing me, I finish with it. Mind you with all my reading I'm not finding much time for TV at the moment.

message 59: by L.F. (new)

L.F. Falconer The only time I force myself to finish a book I can't get into is one I have promised to review. Otherwise, if I can't get into a book by the end of chapter three, I will put it down...what's the point of pushing myself beyond that? I read (first) to be entertained, (second) to be informed. If I want to be bored I can watch reality TV.

Exactly!

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I usually read at least 50.

message 62: by Tracy (new)

Tracy | 223 comments I hate to quit on a book but I have a couple of times. Usually I will finish it unless I have tried it a few times.

message 63: by G.G. (new)

G.G. (ggatcheson) | 92 comments If by half I couldn't get into the book I'll quit. Sometimes I will take it later on and try it again, but so far, I only successfully finished reading one book after leaving it. A few I've tried many times even years later without success.
So I'd say that I try to read at least half the book before I give up.

I will try it at a later time as well. A lot of time I can't get into it because of my mood.

message 65: by [deleted user] (new)

I have had few books I hated, 2 to be precise. I read 5 pages of the first and almost all the pages of the second... Urgh! :P

message 66: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Scott (michellescottfiction) I've read halfway through a book and stopped, and I've also read two pages and stopped. I'm getting more impatient the older I get. Life's too short and there are too many good books to read.

message 67: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (kellymatherly) | 34 comments I choke down the first 10% of a book I hate before giving up. There have been times when at 8% or 9% things turned around and I ended up enjoying the book (it's rare though)

I'm a slow reader and if I hate the book, it's going to take me 3 times as long to get through it if I really try.

message 68: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Webber My cousin always tells me that life is too short for bad books. Still, I can't help but finish them once I start. I don't know why I torture myself, but I do.

message 69: by cc (new)

cc (caitlinisakittycat) I give it the first quarter or first half of the book until I decide that it's super boring or super irritating, then I quit.

Sometimes, if I give it time for my disappointment/rage to diminish, I can finish the book with lots of mockery and eye rolls.

Some books, though, just suck.

I used to feel like I had to finish every book too, Carrie! I've since realized that life is too short and there are too many great books out there!

Craptastic--lol!! :)
