DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) January's Books

1. [image error] A Rush of Wings by Adrian Phoenix - With just one book, Adrian quickly became one of my favorite authors. She created such wonderfully complex characters in Dante, Heather, Von, Lucien and the rest. The book was dark and sexy, disturbing and beautiful - what more can you ask from a book?

2. At Grave's End (Night Huntress #3) by Jeaniene Frost At Grave's End by Jeaniene Frost - I love, love, love Cat and Bones so was really looking forward to this one. A wonderfully read with a greater focus on the action than relationship building in this one. It didn't quite measure up to One Foot in the Grave for me, but I still loved it!

3. In the Blood (The Maker's Song, Book 2) by Adrian Phoenix In the Blood by Adrian Phoenix. The second in her wonderful Maker's Song series and definitive proof that the first book wasn't a fluke. A must read and one of the best releases of the year, I think!

4. Dead Witch Walking (Rachel Morgan/The Hollows, Book 1) by Kim Harrison Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison. My first Rachel Morgan book and I enjoyed it. Likeable characters and an interesting premise. I'll definitely read more in this series

5. [image error] Pure Blood by Caitlin Kittredge - The second book in the engaging Nocturne City series. Kittredge has created a wonderful pack structure which sets the book up nicely for conflict with Dimitri as an alpha and Luna as an insoli. Great read!

6. One More Bite (Jaz Parks, Book 5) by Jennifer Rardin One More Bite by Jennifer Rardin - I love this series and was eagerly awaiting a new adventure for Jaz and Vayl. Aside from finally being rewarded with a real step forward in Jaz and Vayl's relationship we get Cole back. I found myself laughing out loud and virtually every scene he's in. Love him!

7. Shadow Game (GhostWalkers, #1) by Christine Feehan Shadow Game by Christine Feehan - As my opinion is fairly divided on Feehan's Carpathian's I wasn't sure how I'd feel about this series. I ended up finding it quite entertaining and look forward to reading more in the series.

8. [image error] Personal Demons by Stacia Kane - I picked this one up on glowing recommendations, and wasn't disappointed. A really entertaining read and I'm looking forward to the second in the series later this summer.

9. Veil of Midnight (Midnight Breed Series, #5) by Lara Adrian Veil of Midnight by Lara Adrian - Woohoo, the latest Midnight Breeds. Adrian never disappoints with these males. A wonderful and wonderfully quick read.

10. Changeling (Sisters of the Moon, Book 2) by Yasmine Galenorn Changeling by Yasmine Galenorn - This series proved really devisive in one of my other groups when we read the first one for a challenge book. I obviously fell on the side of enjoying them. Not the best books ever, but entertaining reads.

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) February's Books

1. [image error] Pleasure Unbound by Larissa Ione - The first in her new Demonica series. A nice change from all of the weres and vamps I've been reading, as this one focuses on demons. The brothers are conveniently all sex demons, which gives the author a great excuse to throw in lots of steamy encounters. Eidolon was the least intruiging of the brothers to me, but I enjoyed his story - I just looked forward to Shade and Wraith more.

2. The Becoming (Anna Strong, Book 1) by Jeanne C. Stein The Becoming by Jeanne Stein - A good solid start to the series, but it was very much an introduction. I look foward to more adventures with Anna.

3. [image error] Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead - This one started off my YA kick (after my Twilight obsession last year). Absolutely loved Rose and Lissa and the fact that they were real teens with flaws who made mistakes, got moody and fell for the wrong guys. And Dmitri? Whew... yum!

4. Vulnerable (Little Goddess Series, Book 1) by Amy Lane Vulnerable by Amy Lane - Here began my love affair with the world Amy created and its inhabitants in the form of Cory, Adrian and Green. A wonderfully powerful and emotional ride. And did I mention steamy? Whew, yeah! (This series is worth the extra price the independently published costs add).

5. A Kiss of Shadows (Meredith Gentry 1) by Laurell K. Hamilton A Kiss of Shadows (Meredith Gentry 1) by Laurell K. Hamilton - Wasn't sure when I was going to get around to reading this series, so I opted to get the audio book instead. I thought it was an interesting premise and an enjoyable "listen".

6. [image error] Frostbite by Richelle Mead - Just as enjoyable as the first. I loved the further development of the characters and the continued tension between Rose and Dimitri.

7. Shadow Kiss (Vampire Academy, Book 3) by Richelle Mead Shadow Kiss by Richelle Mead - So good! But, augh... the heartbreaking cliff hanger has me counting the days until the release of the next book.

8. Bone Crossed (Mercedes Thompson, Book 4) by Patricia Briggs Bone Crossed by Patricia Briggs - One of my most eagerly awaited books for this year. Briggs doesn't disappoint, rewarding us with the development of the relationship of Mercy and her chosen mate (no spoilers here!). It was great to have Stefan back as well!

9. Wounded (Little Goddess Series, Book 2) by Amy Lane Wounded by Amy Lane - I don't want to give anything away about this book as it follows on the heels of Vulnerable, but it was another amazing read treating us to the addition of Bracken to the main story line.

10. Bound (Little Goddess Series, Book 3) by Amy Lane Bound by Amy Lane - I read both the second and third books in this series over a weekend and it was a real emotional rollercoaster - but in a good way. I was sad to see this book end, and immediately sought out Amy to find out when the next book is due (she's working on it!) A brilliant series that I really wish more people would discover.

11. A Caress of Twilight (Meredith Gentry 2) by Laurell K. Hamilton A Caress of Twilight (Meredith Gentry 2) by Laurell K. Hamilton - Another audio book, and I remain interested by the main story line, but am still not convinced I'll ever be a convert to the Hamilton fan club.

12. Marked (House of Night #1) by P.C. Cast Marked by P.C. and Kristin Cast - This was a weird one for me as I really quite enjoyed the premise and the main story line, but really didn't care for the heroine. I bought the first four in one go though (swayed by the pretty cover and good reviews I'd read), so I kept reading. =)

13. Blood Memories by Barb Hendee Blood Memories by Barb Hendee - An entertaining read made up of not wholly likeable characters. It definitely read like the start of a series though rather than a strong stand alone book.

14. [image error] Glass Houses by Rachel Caine - The first in the wonderful Morganville Vampire series. Like the Vampire Academy kids, Claire, Eve, Shane and Michael are so likeable because they're flawed and relatable. Each book is like a chapter in the over arching story, and they're impossible to put down!

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) March's Books

1. Betrayed (House of Night #2) by P.C. Cast Betrayed by P.C. and Kristin Cast - More exciting adventures and more annoying Zoey. LOL

2. Chosen (House of Night #3) by P.C. Cast Chosen by P.C. and Kristin Cast - ...

3. [image error] Untamed by P.C. and Kristin Cast - I'm not sure why I felt compelled to keep reading these, but I couldn't put them down.

4. [image error] The Dead Girls' Dance by Rachel Caine - Some great twists in this one and some furthering of relationships. Great fun!

5. [image error] Midnight Alley by Rachel Caine - I read these all so quick the plot of each book is kind of running together in my mind, but I loved them all.

6. [image error] Feast of Fools - I read these all so quick the plot of each book is kind of running together in my mind, but I loved them all.

7. Lord of Misrule (The Morganville Vampires, Book 5) by Rachel Caine Lord of Misrule - The cliff hangers of the other books didn't bother me because I had the next book waiting to be read. This one's driving me mad though! Such betrayal! Such a great series! =) I can't wait for the next one.

8. Second Skin (Nocturne City, Book 3) by Caitlin Kittredge Second Skin by Caitlin Kittredge - While I enjoyed this one, I did find myself getting frustrated with Luna and her inability to open up or lean on any one. I felt for Dmitri, but was also compelled by Lucas. Interested to see who makes it back for the next book.

9. Dime Store Magic (Women of the Underworld, Book 3) by Kelley Armstrong Dime Store Magic by Kelley Armstrong - I fell in love with Kelley through Clay and Elena and was always hesitant to carry on the series without them. However, this was an entertaining read and Paige wasn't as annoying as I remembered her. And I'm liking Lucas.

10. Hunted (House of Night #5) by P.C. Cast Hunted by P.C. and Kristin Cast - Seriously, what do these guys see in Zoey? Aughh! And why do I keep reading? LOL

11. You Slay Me (Aisling Grey, Guardian, Book 1) by Katie MacAlister You Slay Me by Katie MacAlister - Wasn't sure if I'd enjoy this or not, but I really did. I quickly went out and ordered the rest of the series.

12. Full Moon Rising (Riley Jenson Guardian Series, Book 1) by Keri Arthur Full Moon Rising by Keri Arthur - Not sure yet what I think of this series. Seemed like the plot was just there to provide opportunities for Riley to have sex - which if I was reading erotic would be one thing. However, I did like the characters, for the most part. I've bought the next book in the series.

13. Magic Strikes (Kate Daniels, Book 3) by Ilona Andrews Magic Strikes by Ilona Andrews - My favorite new release of the year, hands down. Ilona Andrews can do no wrong in my eyes. I can't say enough good things about this book, without giving anything away.

14. [image error] Desire Unchained by Larissa Ione - Another entertaining entry to the series. Liked this one more than the first one and look forward to Wraith's story, waiting for me on April's reading pile.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments FULL MOON RISING

If this can be labeled erotica pr PN erotica, then I like it =D. I don't know if I'd say the plot is weak but is it a little stretched. I have read a few of books and hope that it becomes more focused and does not continue to spin off more. Other than that Riley and her antics keep me interested. Desire Unchained was an absolute fave and I DO look forward to more from Larissa Ione in this series and her other books.

Kasia Uhh, did you say Vulnerable was steamy? I like that, which means another book to read. Or books, cause that's a series. Dammit/ Love it.

This sounds so promising, but ack, it's $50 over here. So good to see you like the Morganville vamps, I'm completely smitten by Michael.

I hear you on the Riley books. I've heard that those of us that found them a bit frustrating will still find them compelling reads, so I'm not giving up. And yes, I'm looking forward to the third Demonica book this month. It's already sitting in my stack of books, but I thought I'd get a few UF titles in first and then head back for some more steaminess. There's something about Wraith...

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) Kasia wrote: "Uhh, did you say Vulnerable was steamy? I like that, which means another book to read. Or books, cause that's a series. Dammit/ Love it."

Definitely steamy! Amy says that she often gets tagged with the erotica label mainly due to her straying outside of basic sex, but I don't think it's a valid reflection of her work. It's definitely hot, but it's so well ingrained in the story that it furthers the narrative rather than leaving you feeling like the plot is just there as an excuse for more sex, like in most erotica titles.

Yeah, as she's self published the books are pricey to begin with, but then it also means exports are even more so. =(

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) April's Books

1. Red-Headed Stepchild (Sabina Kane, Book 1) by Jaye Wells Red-Headed Stepchild by Jaye Wells - A wonderful debut novel to a promising new series. I really enjoyed the characters of Sabina, Adam, and Vinca. Throw a hairless demon cat into the mix and you're set for an exciting adventure. I look forward to reading more about Sabina as she uncovers the secrets of her identity.

2. Wicked Lovely (Wicked Lovely, #1) by Melissa Marr Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr - Really enjoyed this one. Wonderful characters in Aislinn, Seth, Keenan and Donia. I loved that Aislinn could see the fae, but had spent her life carefully pretending she couldn't only to be drawn into their world (which wasn't as beautiful and compelling as they are often portrayed - a really study of the varying shades of gray rather than a simple black and white/good vs evil world). I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. Oh, and gorgeous, gorgeous covers!

3. The Nymphos of Rocky Flats (Felix Gomez, Book 1) by Mario Acevedo The Nymphos of Rocky Flats by Mario Acevedo - An entertaining enough book, but not really to my taste in the end. However, I still love the title and cover.

4. Ill Wind (Weather Warden, Book 1) by Rachel Caine Ill Wind by Rachel Caine - I really enjoyed this first book in the Weather Warden series. I liked the uniqueness of the whole weather warden world, along with the earth and fire wardens and their relationships with the Djinn. Jo was a very enjoyable character, as was David. I was a bit disappointed that we didn't see more of Lewis, as I found him quite intriguing. I also wonder if Paul will feature anymore in future books.

5. Stray (Werecats, Book 1) by Rachel Vincent Stray by Rachel Vincent - A great start to the series. It had a Kelley Armstrong feel to me, and that's a compliment. I look forward to the rest of the series.

6. Ghostland (Ghostland World, #1) by Jory Strong Ghostland by Jory Strong - So, I hate giving up on books and I'll usually push through them, but I've begun to realize that there are too many books out there (let alone too many unread ones currently on my book shelves) to stick with one that I'm just not enjoying. So, for that reason I have decided to put down Ghostland. I'd never heard of Jory Strong before I bought the book - sucked in by the gorgeous cover - so I wasn't familiar with her background in erotica books. I'm not prudish in any way, and can enjoy a good dose of smut as much as the next girl, but this is too much for me. Not enough storyline to go along with the smut. Plus some of her euphemisms are driving me mad, not to mention her comparisons to horse genitalia. Honestly, it's all too much for me, so gorgeous cover be damned, I'm not finishing this book.

7. La Vida Vampire (Oldest City Vampire, Book 1) by Nancy Haddock La Vida Vampire by Nancy Haddock - An enjoyable story with likeable characters. For some reason it didn't draw me in as much as seems to have done others. I'm interested in what happens with Cesca in the future, but I don't feel compelled to run out and buy the next book just yet.

8. The Summoning (Darkest Powers, Book 1) by Kelley Armstrong The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong - The first title in her Dark Powers YA series, which is set in her Otherworld universe. The book is centered on a group of teens forced to reside at Lyle House – a care home for troubled youth. Lyle House is a great setting for developing tension as the idea of being placed in a mental institution where you’re the only one who thinks you’re sane, is quite creepy. As the book concludes you realize that it’s basically just been a set-up for the series, but I didn’t feel that while reading it, as it really drew me in and I read it in one sitting. It has a dreaded cliff-hanger ending though, the annoyance of which is only relieved by the fact that the second book in the series comes out in a week’s time, so I don’t have long to wait. A really good book with flawed characters that I grew attached to. I look forward to seeing what happens next.

9. Lover Avenged (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #7) by J.R. Ward Lover Avenged by J.R. Ward - Another amazing book in the series. I was already a big fan of Rehv, so had high hopes for his book, and Ward didn't disappoint. She created a wonderful mate for him in Ehlena and finally gave us some insight into the world of the symphaths. Much like LeN though, there was a lot else going on. Key story line developments with J.M., Tohr, Xhex and Wrath as well. In fact everyone makes an appearance and plays a part with the exception of Cormia - who only got a quick mention. We're rewarded with development in a lot of the ongoing storylines and she has done a great job of setting up J.M.'s book - I just can't believe we have a whole year to wait for it! It made me laugh and it made me cry, and even at 527 pages, I didn't want it to end. What more could you want?

10. Ink Exchange (Wicked Lovely, #2) by Melissa Marr Ink Exchange by Melissa Marr - Another wonderful book in the series. Ink Exchange was much darker than Wicked Loverly, but no less enjoyable. Marr created great characters in Leslie, Irial and Niall (Niall had fascinated me in Wicked Lovely, so I was glad to see him take center stage). Definitely not your average YA book, and I loved it for that. I'm anxious to see where the story takes us next.

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) May's Books

1. [image error] Fragile Eternity by Melissa Marr - Another wonderful book in Marr's Wicked Lovely series. Trouble continues to grow between the courts, with the addition of the High court as a key player in this one. I enjoyed learning more about it and Sorcha. I always liked Seth, so seeing him come forward in the lead role of this book was great. Niall's role was another big plus for me, although it was disappointing that there was no furthering of his story with Leslie. All in all, a great story and way of bringing Seth in as an even more pivotal character and a wonderful set up for the future books.

2. [image error] The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong - This second entry in the series is even stronger than the first. Less backstory on the supernatural aspects allows the book to focus more on the conspiracy behind Lyle House and the groups attempts to escape. I'm enjoying the development of the characters, especially Chloe and Derek. There's definitely an attraction there, even if she hasn't quite admitted it to herself yet. Again the book leaves with the closing of a chapter but with the rest of the story wide open. I'm definitely looking forward to the next development in the storyline.

3. Men of the Otherworld (Otherworld) by Kelley Armstrong Men of the Otherworld by Kelley Armstrong - A wonderful collection of stories of our favorites (Clay, Jeremy, Antonio and Nick) and our not so favorite (Malcolm). I'll admit now that I've only read the first three of the four stories, but only because the latter takes place further along in the Otherworld series than I am at the moment (I cheated and read this one out of order), but I still think I can safely give this five stars. In fact it earns that for Savage alone. The story from little boy Clay's POV was brilliant and had a number of real laugh out loud moments. The collection was a brilliant insight into what made the men the men they are when we're first introduced to them in Bitten. A must read for fans of the series, especially fans of the werewolves.

4. Industrial Magic (Women of the Otherworld, #4) by Kelley Armstrong Industrial Magic by Kelley Armstrong - Another great book in the Otherworld series. I've really come to like Paige and Lucas, they're really sweet together and I enjoy watching them on their crash course in parenting with Savannah. I also enjoyed getting a real glimpse into the Cabals and found myself quite liking Benicio. I loved that this one had such a wide cast of characters, bringing back Clay, Elena and Jeremy as well as Cassandra and Aaron and Adam. And I wasn't sure that I was going to like Jaime at first, but I definitely do and am loving her crushing on Jeremy. Oh, and bringing back Eve was an interesting twist. I look forward to seeing how she plays in future books. The story was a great mystery and had a great villian. A really enjoyable read that has got me ready to carry on with the next book in the series.

5. Wondrous Strange by Lesley Livingston Wondrous Strange by Lesley Livingston - This was a quick and easy read, and although enjoyable enough - it just didn't wow me as much as it has others. The characters were likable enough, but I didn't develop any attachment to them. I didn't learn enough about the courts to really care who was in power or why. The final scene felt a bit rushed, but I guess was just setting up for the possibility of a sequel. It just left me feeling a bit "meh...".

6. Succubus Blues (Georgina Kincaid, #1) by Richelle Mead Succubus Blues by Richelle Mead - Already a fan of Mead's Vampire Academy series, I was excited to see if her adult series are as good as her YA ones. I was not disappointed. I loved Georgina and her wit and charm and her conflict over her life as an unwilling succubus. Her motley crew of friends include vampires, imps and angels, making for an unusual and entertaining group. Georgina has two very different but appealing male interests for Georgina in Seth and Roman. I was surprised to find that although I had a favorite, I actually really liked them both. I also loved the writing process as seen through Seth's eyes - interesting and entertaining. Bottom line - I loved it and can't wait to get started on the second book.

7. City of Bones (Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare City of Bones - An enjoyable start to the Mortal Instruments trilogy. All of the characters were enjoyable enough, though none were particularly developed. The relationship between Clary and Jace seemed a bit forced to me, as I didn't see where the affection actually started. And normally Simon is the character I would root for (the equivalent of Seth in Marr's Wicked Lovely), but I honestly didn't feel there was enough there for me to care about. I would have liked more story on Alec and Isabelle, but maybe that's to come in the next books. The twist at the end was intersting, and yet oddly glossed over. This and one other character reveal are two topics not always addressed in YA books, but she didn't seem to do much with either. Again, I guess I'll have to see if they're addressed more in the other books. Overall, I enjoyed the story and am optimistic that the series will continue to improve.

8. City of Ashes (Mortal Instruments, #2) by Cassandra Clare City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare - I enjoyed this instalment in the Mortal Instruments trilogy much more than the first. The questions and issues that I had left at the end of City of Bones were mostly addressed. And while I'd still like to see more of Alec, I was glad to see his sexuality wasn't glossed over. All of the relationships were better developed and I found myself caring for the characters. There were some interesting developments, and one fairly obvious though not yet resolved one

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) June's Books

1. Carpe Corpus (The Morganville Vampires, #6) by Rachel Caine Carpe Corpus by Rachel Caine - Caine delivers another great installment in the Morganville Vampire series. Lord of Misrule left the housemates separated and vulnerable. Everything was resolved in this book, but as we know, nothing ever goes smoothly in Morganville. There were surprises, some that I loved and others that brought me to tears - a perfect combination! I can't wait to see where Caine takes the series next, as this is the first book where the future wasn't clear. *****

2. City of Glass (Mortal Instruments, #3) by Cassandra Clare City of Glass by Cassandra Clare - A wonderful conclusion to the Mortal Instruments trilogy. Clare continued to craft a wonderfully detailed world and complicated tale, throwing in intriguing twists and turns. All of the characters grew and matured. Each was touched by tragedy and love and came out stronger for it. There was a couple of really touching and beautifully written scenes that tugged at my heart strings. I think the ending was just as it should have been. While most of the story lines were wrapped up, there remains plenty of scope for further stories within the universe. *****

3. Rogue (Shifters, #2) by Rachel Vincent Rogue by Rachel Vincent - A wonderful read with a great mystery that the Pride has to solve. Faythe matures a bit more in each book, which makes her a more likable character. Where Marc came off as a bit overbearing in Stray, I really liked him in this one. He and Faythe want different things from their relationship, and I found myself sympathizing with them both for different reasons. Unlike the first book, which had a clear ending, this one leads straight into the next book, which I had to immediately pick up as soon as read the last page. *****

4. Pride (Shifters, #3) by Rachel Vincent Pride by Rachel Vincent - spend the book with Faythe as she is charged for her crimes of the previous book. Again, Faythe continues to grow and mature and is finally forced to deal with the consequences of her actions. Unfortunately this time she isn't the only one who suffers. Her relationship with Marc continues to be an emotional roller coaster, and there were definitely a few tears shed as I read. The discovery of another tabby brought another interesting angle to the story and I enjoyed learning about her. A great read with a lot of action and intrigue with some bad guys that should be good but are actually far worse than the obvious bad guys. I put this book down desperately wishing Prey were already out so that I could discover what happens next. I guess I should just be thankful that I only have a few weeks to wait. *****

5. Interstitial by Ann Somerville Interstitial by Ann Somerville - A vaguely interesting story, but the writing felt amateurish to me and I didn't feel a connection between any of the characters. Hell, even the M/M action wasn't hot. =( It wasn't horrible, but I don't feel compelled to read any more by the author. ***

6. A Hunger Like No Other (Immortals After Dark, #2) by Kresley Cole A Hunger Like No Other by Kresley Cole - A quick and steamy read. I loved the werewolf in love with a vampire angle. Obviously Lachlain was overbearing and it took me a while to warm to him, but bot of the characters really grew on me as the book progressed. I enjoyed the humor and the world in which they live, but I must say I was most intrigued with Bowen and look forward to reading his story! ****

7. Succubus Nights (Georgina Kincaid, #2) by Richelle Mead Succubus Nights by Richelle Mead - Whew... I'm loving this series and the cast of characters. Obviously Georgina is a great protagonist (although she did disappoint me greatly in this one), but I love Seth more and more (love his awkwardness and shy demeanor where he can only express himself in the written word) and my fascination with Carter continues to grow. And wow, any story line that promises to try and bring down narrow minded and hateful people that wave the flag of religion in their defense? - sign me up! ;) *****

8. Succubus Dreams (Georgina Kincaid, #3) by Richelle Mead Succubus Dreams by Richelle Mead - This series continues to go from strength to strength. A great mystery in this one, and more of the brilliant Carter. ;) Where the last book left me angry with Georgina, this one left me angry with Seth. A lot more emotional then the other books in the series so far, this one gave us more glimpses into Georgina's past. We met interessting new characters in Dante, Yasmine and Vincent and Georgina continues to battle with who she is and the role she's been forced to assume due to a mistake she made countless centuries ago. The possibility of a possible loop hole in her contract is fascinating. And I can only hope for more happiness in the coming books. *****

9. Private Demon (Darkyn, #2) by Lynn Viehl Private Demon by Lynn Viehl - It's been a while since I read If Angels Burn, so I must admit that I'd forgotten a lot of the storyline. I quickly remembered the story of Thierry and his family though and got sucked into his new story with Jema and found myself really liking them both. I'm not sure if I was supposed to like Jaus, but actually found him to be a bit creepy. It was nice to see Alexandra and Michael play so heavy a part in this one, as it's often the case that once a couple gets their HEA you see little of them in the series - although it reminded me that I don't care too much for them as a couple (does she have to start every interaction confrontational and bitchy?). My one big complaint - the terminology. All of these made up words with no explanation and no glossary. Very annoying... ****

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) June's Books Pt 2

10. Dark Need (Darkyn, #3) by Lynn Viehl Dark Need by Lynn Viehl - I enjoyed the premise of this book, but it all seemed really rushed and disappointing at the end. I liked Lucan and Samantha, but their relationship seemed forced too quickly. The mystery of the murders was initially quite engaging, but seemed more of an afterthought at the end of the book. I think it could have been a lot better but was left feeling like Viehl must have been on a deadline and had to quickly wrap everything up rather than taking the time to develop relationships and provide a satisfying concusion to the murders. And I'm still not warming to Michael and Alexandra. Meh... ***

11. [image error] Succubus Heat by Richelle Mead - adore this series, and the gloom and doom I felt after Succubus Dreams was erased by this latest installment. That's not to say that it wasn't without it's emotional ups and downs, but my faith in the characters was restored. I thought the story line was great and had lots of twists and turns (although, unfortunately I knew one critical piece due to having read it in a supposedly non-spoiler thread). I'm optimistic for the Succubus Shadows and what it will bring Georgina, I'm just sad we have to wait until next March to read it. *****

13. Lover Unbound (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #5) by J.R. Ward Lover Unbound by J.R. Ward - Another great reading by Jim Frangione *****

14. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen & Seth Grahame-Smith - Ha! What to say about this? First off, the premise of the book is hilarious and so well executed. If you're a fan of Pride and Prejudice and the paranormal, there is no bad here. I loved all of the humor added in and regularly found myself laughing out loud. The aspects that were changed to include the zombies were brilliant and I loved that the Bennet sisters are all kick ass zombie slayers. And as my review is of the audiobook, I would be remiss if I didn't praise the narration - Katherine Kellgren was outstanding. By far one of the best audiobooks I've listened to. I usually only listen to audiobooks of books I've actually read and enjoyed, but was swayed to skip straight to the audiobook of this when I heard a sample, and I think it was definitely the right choice. *****

14. Storm Front (The Dresden Files, Book 1) by Jim Butcher Storm Front by Jim Butcher - I enjoyed this first Dresden novel. Having heard so many negative reviews about the first book in the series, I wasn't sure what to expect. No, it wasn't the best book ever, but it was entertaining. I'll admit though that I imagine my enjoyment of the book was greatly enhanced by James Marsters' narration. He's got a brilliant voice and played the various parts very well. We've even got a bit of "Spike" in the form of Bob. I'd listen to him read the yellow pages, but thankfully I've got the next book in the series instead. ;) ****

15. Stranded by Lori Foster Stranded by Lori Foster - This is the first Lori Foster book I've ever read/heard, but I thought it was enjoyable. I know the reviews for it haven't been great, but I thouht it was sweet. The characters were likeable and their relationship was sweet. Of course, this was a free download, not necessarily the type of story I would normally buy, but I did enjoy it. ****

16. [image error] Weddings From Hell Anthology - I'd read Jeaniene Frost's story back when I bought the book, swayed by an appearnce by Bones. It was good. This time around I particularly enjoyed Terri Garey's story which has prompted me to go out and buy the first in the Nikki Styx series. Maggie Shayne's story was okay, but felt a bit rushed. ****

17. No Rest for the Wicked (Immortals After Dark, #3) by Kresley Cole No Rest for the Wicked by Kresley Cole - I really enjoyed this, the second installment in the Immortals After Dark series. Sebastian and Kaderina were more likeable characters than the protagonists of the first book. They were both had tortured pasts, having suffered great loss. Sebastian obviously felt compelled to have Katja, but wasn't overbearing about it. The Hie was entertaining and gave us an even greater glance of Bowen, further strengthening my interest in his book, the next in the series (and I've been told, the best one).

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) July's Books

1. Prey (Shifters, #4) by Rachel Vincent Prey by Rachel Vincent - Wow, just when you think a series can't get better - it does. Vincent has delivered an extremely emotional and powerful book. The drama of the book kicks off with an orchestrated attack by strays which is practically unheard of. They barely have time to recover when Marc is taken. This sets up a race against time to find him and to discover who is behnd it all. Nothing in Faythe's life is easy though, and as is often the case for her, things don't go to plan. Some really significant things happen that affect not only Faythe and Marc, but the whole Pride. Ethan and Jace have significant roles in this book, which is always a plus, and we watch as the tables continue to get turned on Faythe as she struggles to get through to Kaci.

I've certainly been known to shed my share of tears over books, but this one crushed me at times and I think I must have cried on and off through half of it. A true testament to Rachel's writing skills that I have become so wrapped up in the Pride and everything that happens to them. Awesome! *****

2. An Unforgettable Lady by Jessica Bird An Unforgettable Lady by Jessica Bird - This is the first book I've red by Ms. Bird that wasn't part of her work as J.R. Ward, and I wasn't disappointed. Though the contemporary romance setting isn't one I'd normally pick up, I really enjoyed the two protagonists in this story and the over arching mystery was well done. John is a great example of the alpha men Ward writes so well, and I really enjoyed his character. And like the females in Ward's books, Grace has a quiet strength that she slowly discovers and embraces over the course of the book. There were several interesting supporting characters that would have made the basis for a compelling series, but I'm glad to hear we see some of the characters in later Bird novels. A thoroughly enjoyable read! ****

3. Wicked Deeds on a Winter's Night (Immortals After Dark, #3) by Kresley Cole Wicked Deeds on a Winter's Night by Kresley Cole - A brilliant entry in the Immortals After Dark series. I've been fascinated by Bowen since the first book, and his story didn't disappoint. His story picks up during the Hie of book two where he and Marikita meet for the first time - and she curses him. She's a great match for him, a strong character in her own right. This is another case of a feisty modern female and a male who is out of touch with the world around him. Bowe thought that his dead mate, the prim and proper Mariah, was his ideal only to be completely thrown for a loop when he gets to know the self-assured and fun-loving Mari and realizes she is everything he never knew he was missing. A great story line full of adventure, humor and a strong dash of steaminess from a great author and a wonderful series (it's just a shame the covers are so bad). *****

4. Ashes of Midnight (Midnight Breed, #6) by Lara Adrian Ashes of Midnight by Lara Adrian - Another great Midnight Breed novel and a quick and entertaining read. Reichen has been an interesting character since he was first introduced - was it back in Tegan and Elise's book? After the devestating conclusion to Veil of Midnight, we knew that Reichen was going to be looking for vengeance. His Breed power of pyrokinesis is an interesting one, which leads to some pretty devestating conclusions. Claire was a great breedmate for him. Discovering their past and experiencing their reunion was an enjoyable read. The main story of the battle within Breed society was furthered in this book and it ended with a great set-up for the next book. And as a good amount of the story took place back in the States, we good to see a fair amount of all of the other characters, which was nice. Overall, I really enjoyed this book, although for some reason, not as much as the past few. ****

5. Dark Needs at Night's Edge (Immortals After Dark, #4) by Kresley Cole Dark Needs at Night's Edge by Kresley Cole - A wonderful read with two great characters in Conrad and Néome. I loved the twist of Conrad finding his redemption through his love of a ghost - a crazed vampire lost in bloodlust and a saucy ballerina cut down in the prime of her life. As always, there were some great twists and turns on the road to their eternal happiness and plenty of steamy scenes along the way.

We got to see several characters from past books including Nikolai and Sebastian, and some brilliant scenes with Nucking Futs Nix and Mari (and the later, Bowen). Rydstrom and Cade also had important roles and Cole did a good job of deepening my interest in Cade and setting up for his story.

Overall, another great installment in a series I'm really enjoying! *****

6. [image error] Mind Game by Christine Feehan - Mind Game sees Lily discovering the location of another of the young girls from Dr. Whitney's experiments, Dahlia Le Blanc. Loner Nicolas Trevane volunteers to go and find her. Obviously we know from the outset that Nicolas and Dahlia will come together, but it's wonderful to watch how it develops. Both are so used to solitary existences, that they are shocked by how much they enjoy each other's company. Dahlia suffers the most being in constant company both because she's never experienced it and because of the dangerous effects of her gifts. Dahlia has some great gifts, and when they come together with Nicolas' - sparks fly, both literally and metaphorically. The story has an interesting story line, great action and lots of steam. Nicolas and Dahlia make a great couple and there story was a joy to read. And hey - this is the story that introduces the Norton Twins *****

I admit, I did not cry over this one. But I agree with you 100% - this book was much better than the previous ones. I used to have mixed feelings about this series. Now I'm eagerly looking forward to a new installment.

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) August's Books

A challenge free month meant I read fewer books, and for some reason failed to write up reviews on most. Hmm... maybe I'll do better next month.

1. Bad Moon Rising (Dark-Hunter, #19) by Sherrilyn Kenyon Bad Moon Rising by Sherrilyn Kenyon - I've really been looking forward to this book, as the were hunters tend to be my favorites in the Dark Hunter world and I loved the glimpses we'd had of Fang and Aimee in previous books. That being said, this wasn't quite as good as I was hoping.

A large part of the book covers story lines from previous books - primarily Vane's and Wren's. I didn't mind this as we were seeing the story from Fang and Aimee's perspectives. However, there was a considerable amount of moving forward in time and it all felt a bit dijointed and rushed and as a result, didn't flow as well as it could have.

There were a few things raised in the book that were later left undealt with which bothered me, including aspects of Aimee's abilities and the mention of a character who then later never made an appearance. If it was simply set-up for future books, it felt a bit heavy handed for something that wasn't going to be adressed in this story.

I liked Thorn and look forward to possibly seeing more of him. Savitar's character doesn't appeal anymore to me than it ever has though. What I'd really like to see is Dev's story - and the amount of time he got in the book leads me to believe he will likely get his own book in the future.

Overall I enjoyed the story, but I think it could have been better. It hasn't changed my opinion that the series peaked with Acheron. ****

2. Destined for an Early Grave (Night Huntress, #4) by Jeaniene Frost Destined for an Early Grave by Jeanine Frost *****

3. [image error] Storm Born by Richelle Mead ****

4. Grimspace (Sirantha Jax, #1) by Ann Aguirre Grimspace by Ann Aguirre ****

5. [image error] Blood Promise by Richelle Mead *****

6. Dark Desires After Dusk (Immortals After Dark, #6) by Kresley Cole Dark Desires After Dusk by Kresley Cole - Hands down, my favorite of the series so far. I was intrigued by Cade and the last book and he certainly doesn't disappoint. Not only is he one hot demon, but he had me laughing out loud, repeatedly. His brash, rough around the edges persona was a brilliant counter balance to Holly's uptight OCD tendencies. They led us along entertaining adventure after adventure and the book did a wonderful job of setting up Rydstrom's story. And bonus - a fair amount of the ever spectacular Nucking Futs Nix (when does she get her HEA?). An absolutely brilliant series (that really deserves better covers)! *****

7. Kiss of a Demon King (Immortals After Dark, #7) by Kresley Cole Kiss of a Demon King by Kresley Cole *****

8. [image error] Magic Strikes (audiobook) by Ilona Andrews - Another brilliant narration of one 2009's best releases. Although Derek made me cry, Kate and Curran made me laugh out loud - continually! *****

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) September's Books

1. Stray (Shifters, #1) by Rachel Vincent Stray by Rachel Vincent - It was great to "re-read" where it all started with Faythe and Marc. While the narrator did a fine job, her voice just didn't work as Faythe for me. ****

2. Night Game (GhostWalkers, #3) by Christine Feehan Night Game by Christine Feehan - My favorite of the series so far, I absolutely adored Gator and Flame as they regularly has me laughing out loud. While a traditional alpha male, Gator also has a very sweet and sensitive side and a wicked sense of humor. Flame was the perfect counter to him with a mix of strength and vulnerability and a wit to match Gator's. The action was great, but it was not without tragedy adding an extra layer of drama.

The mystery behind the GhostWalkers continues to unfold and the story poses more questions than it answers, but that just serves to pull the reader into the series even more. *****

3. Hunting Ground (Alpha & Omega, #2) by Patricia Briggs Hunting Ground by Patricia Briggs - really enjoyed this book, much more than Cry Wolf. I love that we're getting to know Anna and Charles more and watching their relationship develop. Charles has always been such a mystery, so I really enjoyed discovering more about him through Anna. Anna's role as an omega is becoming clearer and I enjoyed watching her become more confident in herself and with Charles. Seeing Tom and Moira again was a huge bonus, as I'd really enjoyed their story in Strange Brew.

A brilliant addition to what is becoming a really enjoyable series. *****

4. Witch Craft Witch Craft by Caitlin Kittredge - Another entertaining entry in the Nocturne City series. I enjoyed seeing the changes in Luna as she now heads her own department. My frustration with her in Second Skin was gone, as Dimitri is no longer around, her attempts to sabotage their relationship having succeeded.

It was a pleasant surprise to see Lucas return with a fairly substantial role. He was very intriguing in the last book and even more so here.

Will was a wonderful addition, bringing a nice balance to Luna and some comic relief.

The overall mystery was a good one and I look forward to more adventures with Luna and her team. ****

5. Moon Called (Mercedes Thompson, #1) by Patricia Briggs Moon Called by Patricia Briggs - Already a huge fan of this series, I eagerly devoured the audiobook. Lorelei King did a wonderful job of bringing Mercy, Adam, Samuel and all the rest to life. I eagerly await the release of the next books in the series. *****

6. Wes and Toren Wes and Toren by J.M. Colail - A lovely story that is both sweet and steamy. Wesley and Toren are both really likable young men coming to terms with their sexuality and its impact on their worlds.

The combination of the bad boy and the wholesome boy is not unique, but is wonderfully portrayed here. Both Wes and Tor are wonderfully developed and I quickly grew attached to them. Their relationship is not without its ups and downs and each of them must deal with their insecurities and the various obstacles to their happiness thrown up by family and friends.

The sex becomes more prevalent as the story progresses, but it's a great mix of steam and tenderness. The biggest change comes from Toren as he becomes more confident in both the relationship and himself.

A really enjoyable read. ****

7. Staked (Void City, Book 1) by J.F. Lewis Staked by J.F. Lewis - A really entertaining read and twist on the vampire mythology. Eric is a brilliant character, trying to balance his life as an uber-vamp with the human morals he never let go of. The story is full of entertaining characters and a well put together mystery. Eric's limited memory makes for some truly amusing situations.

I will definitely be reading ReVamped in the near future. ****
