Done! I'm on the air now:D

Danni | 248 comments Thanks Cmbwey . My Saturday has been rather marvellous. I'm lovin' all these hugs. I must complain more often.

JustJen "Miss Conduct" (just_jen) I hate that I am so technologically challenged.

And I hate that my Windows upgrade that was supposed to clean up, make it faster and mo better, has done no such thing, forcing to wait for it to reboot and reconfigure (while I'm in the middle of something, naturally) just about once every time I'm using it.

New and improved just like Windows Vista!

JustJen "Miss Conduct" (just_jen) Windows 7 Ultimate - yeah, right.

message 56: by Macky (new)

Macky (mactut) I hate that it would cost me £76 to upgrade from Windows 7 basic to windows 7 premium and still I'd have the slowest netbook in the whole universe! Also I hate that my battery doesn't last 5 mins before I seem to have to recharge it again.. In fact I just hate the darn thing full stop and wish I'd never bought it. Thank god for my ipad, although that too drives me round the bend sometimes with its temperamental touch keyboard. :(

Dustin Karpovich I hate it when I download porn to my computer that it has hidden viruses and slows down my computer. Makes me mad!

message 58: by Lori S. (new)

Lori S. (fuzzipueo) | 2809 comments I hate that I had a software issue fixed for $160+ recently and now the battery is dying in the laptop and it'd cost $300 to get that fixed or for $500 I can get a new computer ... Sigh. On top of the getting the tires replaced on my car - which was important, I admit - this is going to be one heck of an expensive year.

JustJen "Miss Conduct" (just_jen) I hate that I tried to download yahoo messenger and it put the yahoo toolbar on my compy and now it puts random links on words all over GR, and I cannot figure out how to get rid of it. :<

I find the Yahoo Toolbar to be quite buggy and useless - it always causes me problems, like freezing my ability to switch between tabs and navigating correctly. My suggestion is to uncheck Y's toolbar and leave it off or uninstall it if you can.

I hate the fact that you have installed Yahoo messenger toolbar especially because I feel like it's partly my fault (insert sheepish looking onion head here.)

I hate the fact that Yahoo messenger is all like 'in yo face' whenever I sign in too, so I've been all like 'NO, in yo face Yahoo messenger back atcha' by going into Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and uninstalling the stoopid mofo toolbar. And then going into all the settings and unchecking all the boxes too so it doesn't jump out at me whenever I log on. I am now breathing a sigh of relief.

message 62: by JustJen "Miss Conduct" (last edited Apr 30, 2013 05:59AM) (new)

JustJen "Miss Conduct" (just_jen) LMAO. I had that same conversation with my Yahoo invader. Just to show it who was boss, I quickly uninstalled that sucker. However, it then showee me who was boss by sticking its push toolbar to my browser. I could hear its sneaky laughter at all my failed attempts at remembering how to remove pesky toolbars. :<

When I went to the tools button, all it gave me were more yahoo options! I heard more sneaky laughter that I was sure came from the creepy toolbar. :(

Creepy toolbar indeed with its creepy smiley faced optimism.

I hope you didn't go to the tools button on yahoo - that's playing into the enemy's creepy hands. Go into the windows control panel. Windows is your friend in this matter, not Yahoo. Trust me.

Lori S. (fuzzipueo) | 2809 comments That's the problem with free speech, darn it all! 'Course, people seem to think that they shouldn't take responsibility for their word choices. For some, it seems, it's a chance to throw hurtful nonsense into the ether and watch everyone else squabble over the language/subject matter. They get a kick out of stirring up situations.

I do try to limit what I read, but it's bit addictive to go hunting for the comments section in any article these days.

message 71: by Hilary (new)

Hilary Evans (hilevans83) | 121 comments Every time my husband either hears me giggle uncontrollably or make an angry noise these days, he asks if I'm on Facebook reading comments. I used to just read them, but the last two weeks I can't help but correct people when they are blatantly lying of taking something so out of context it had to be intentional. I'm just fed up with the hate and intolerance and people just repeating exactly what they hear from some conspiracy theorist's blog as if all the nut job has to do is type and hit send to make it so. I made the comment a couple weeks ago after hearing the thousandth person call gun ownership a "god given right" that the Constirution was written by man. And this person told me that I was wrong because in the document it mentions that God had a part in it. This fine upstanding Christian then proceeded to call me a traitor, say my husband must be ashamed that he married someone who talks like that with him being military, threatened me, and then called ME antisocial. I've seriously reached my can't take anymore crap limit. Lol

Now there is problem to get to my home on GR, what is going on?!? Amazon.com I can not get a mail to be contact when the book ITW is published again *grrr* not my day with the websites today, all seem to want to make problems and all on the same time *sigh* hate that :-(

message 76: by Roger (new)

Roger Kean | 17278 comments I hate "Cloud". Cloud is all very well for people who live in big cities — like Manhattan (naming no names…) — with high speed Internet connection, but running a memory-demanding application that isn't on your own hard drive but floating serenely above your head somewhere as a download is a mug's game. It don't work. One day maybe, but not now. Besides, I like to know where my files are…

Averin | 1962 comments I hate that my gimpy hands and fingers cannot drag a file from my Mac to the correct folder on Dropbox. And that I'm too distracted by other things to wait until I hear the Apple boing so that I know it reached Dropbox.

Free (up to 4GB) cloud storage. The LHNB team use it or I wouldn't bother. Of course, you may detest, as do I, that it constantly exhorts you to "get more!" by either paying or roping in your friends.

message 80: by Roger (new)

Roger Kean | 17278 comments I refer to Message 77: I hate Cloud, so that's why I hate Dropbox. It's probably like Yousendit, always on the grub for more money. And I had to give up on Skype because it doesn't react well with my iMac running Mountain Lion (takes 10 minutes to boot up and won't free up the computer on start up until it's done so). And then there's the egregious Mackeeper, which costs a fortune and doesn't do a thing.

Come to think of it, I guess I just hate everything!

Before i bought my Mac, I hadn't touched one since 1995. Do you use a disk maintenance utility? Inquiring minds don't want to know.

Averin wrote: "Before i bought my Mac, I hadn't touched one since 1995. Do you use a disk maintenance utility? Inquiring minds don't want to know."

I have super-duper expensive disk maintenance utility and found it to be useless. I never use it or the Mac's own built-in disk utility called Disk Utility.

In my opinion there is no reason to use a disk utility with a Mac. Mac's do not need defragmentation like PC's do since Mac OS X uses measurers to avoid fragmentation. Source: http://macs.about.com/od/faq1/f/defra...

Some people feel that after years of use it helps to used Disk Utility, a program built-in to the Mac operating system. I don't agree. I have a 5 year old Mac Mini that runs as fast as the day I bought it and a 4 year old Macbook Pro that I've never used disk utility on because it has never needed it. However, I make sure the hard drive is never more than 75 percent full.

The most common reasons a Mac or even a PC to slow down is if you use 90 percent of the hard drive because it makes it difficult to use disk space for virtual memory. I suggest that you get a bigger drive or delete unnecessary files if this is the case.

However, some people do suggested using the Mac's Disk Utility program if you find the Mac is slowed down significantly. Even though I have never found any benefits in doing this and don't recommend it, here are the directions on how to use Disk Utility for that purpose in the Youtube video at this link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aG2y...

Once again I recommend against using any disk utility including the built in Disk Utility already on your Mac as part of the OS X operating system.

Using the built in caused the second biggest scare I had besides the death of my battery, fortunately I do regular back-ups on an external hd.

Averin wrote: "Using the built in caused the second biggest scare I had besides the death of my battery, fortunately I do regular back-ups on an external hd"

Grumpily I must say you prove my reason for saying I did not recommend using Apple's Disk Utility (nor any third party disk utility.) As I said the Mac's operating system is made to minimize fragmentation so unlike PC's using a disk utility is useless if not potentially harmful on a Mac.

Now thanks to your insight in the matter I can also say it is scary~!

I give you homage and applause for doing the sensible thing that most most people ignore, making regular backups on an external drive. I use two external USB drives for back ups, one for an Apple Time Machine backup and one for a clone of my hard drive using Carbon Copy Clone 3 which is dandy because it can be used to run your computer if your hard drive fails or to restore all files to the old or a replacement drive.

I give you three rousing cheers for your backup routine. Hoorah, hoorah, hooray~!

message 87: by Roger (new)

Roger Kean | 17278 comments I agree with Lucas regarding Macs. The days when HD optimization was required once or twice a year went out the window with bigger internal drives, and the Mac's OS has always been tidy. Finder can, after a while, mess up a few "bundle bits" and file headers, in which case the Disk Utility on the installer disk can be used (after total back-up externally), but it's long-winded and can go wrong (according to some users online). I have a 2007 iMac which has never be "cleaned up" with anything, and next to it a 2009 iMac which started faster and is now running much slower. But, as Lucas pointed out, I'm currently occupying a bit more than 75% of the HD because I need to keep so much live rather than backing-up on a permanent media and clearing out the files on the HD. Now trying really hard to get that way down to 25% of saved files/apps.

message 88: by Averin (new)

Averin | 1962 comments I use a 1TB Silicon Power for the Mac and a 750Gb for my Acer laptop which I only use for PackeTracer. I love how TimeMachine makes it easy on the Mac.

People always think Apple is the computer of schools but my kids say they've never used one there. We had loads of (Lisas and IIes, I think) at De Anza but Lone Star (college of wannabe homicidal maniacs) only had them for the Vis Comm programs and web design.

It's really hard to get realistic, plain-speaking advice or knowledge. MacForum spins my head, all I wanted was advice on Calibre.

Averin | 1962 comments I have the MacBook Air max of 4. I use Firefox mainly for school as PeopleSoft likes FireFox. But we have Comcast with Norton, and Norton does not like Firefox. I think they are all too stupid to understand Firefox for Mac is v. 18 (19?) and only sees the one and so thinks it is v. 1. First grade math people!

Averin | 1962 comments I hate when the help in MS Word does not help, or I'm too obtuse.

You can compare two versions of a document to see how they differ. Word shows the differences with revision marks.
Open one of the two versions of the document that you want to compare.
On the Tools menu, point to Track Changes, and then click Compare Documents.
On the Original document pop-up menu, select the original document.
On the Revised document pop-up menu, browse to the other version of the document, and then click OK.
Changes from the revised copy are merged into a new copy that is based on the original copy of the document. The original copy remains untouched. Revision marks show any differences introduced by the revised copy of the document.

Where? Pointing or clicking does not show compare.

message 93: by Eric (last edited Jun 03, 2013 06:45AM) (new)

Eric Westfall (eawestfall) | 386 comments Averin,

In Word 2010, when you open a document and click on the Review tab, in the middle there is the "track changes" tab but further to the right there is a Compare (3rd from the right on my screen). Click that. At the top of the dialog box (??) are two drop down boxes to identify the old and new versions. They seem to "remember" several recent documents, but there is also a "browse" feature to find what you want.

Below on the left is a "more" icon. Click that and it offers you click/unclick items to decide what to compare. I haven't needed it for a while, but as I recall I unclicked the "compare white space". I usually do comparisons at the "word" level rather than character level.

Then click the option for show the results in a new document.

After that, et voila! should be appropriate.

Eric

p.s. I have to rush out, but somewhere there is the ability to set the colors, one for strikeout, one for additions, in the compared document. Hope this helps.

Below

Arcanum Noctis (arcanum_noctis) I really hate that the US government uses the internet and works with platforms like Google, Facebook and Youtube to collect data about users even if didn't do something wrong. It may be legal in the States, but it for sure isn't in Germany and they collect data from us German users, too. Illegally! I absolutely despise that! Not just on behalf of German people, but on behalf of everyone who uses the internet. It threatens our freedom and our right of data-security.

That said, I don't have anything against the States per se or the people living there. I just have something against this kind of politics, no matter how often somebody tells me terrorism threatens democracy and we need restrictions to grant our safety. We should do it like Norway did. Fighting terrorism with liberalism, openness and fearlessness. Fear just leads to more fear and violations of our rights as free human beings.

The people who live in the US are infuriated that the United State's Putanic secret agencies like the CIA would have their data from Google too. So we agree. Thanks for mentioning our BIG BROTHER problem.

I also hate to see the USA always acting like a big dumb, bully pushing it's weight around thinking they can solve every problem in the world with drones and unauthorized, illegal military action. Our only problem is that in four years things will be worse when President Obama leaves, especially if those Nazi Republicans take over the White House.

Arcanum Noctis (arcanum_noctis) I also hate to see the USA always acting like a big dumb, bully pushing it's weight around thinking they can solve every problem in the world with drones and unauthorized, illegal military action.

Well, I wouldn't say that this directly 'cause, well, I'm from Germany and around here you sometimes have to be careful what you say about American politics. The States are regarded as friends ever since the end of WWII and they regard themselves as our friends (in a diplomatic sense, I'm not sure what the general population thinks about us). The problem with that is that some American politicians can't seem to tolerate a different opinion than their own.

For example, back when our former chancellor Schröder wouldn't go to war with the USA against Iraq. Germany got a lot of problems with American and English governments for that. What they didn't see was that German people actually went to the streets against this war, 'cause it was obvious to us the reasons Bush gave for invading Iraq were untrue or at least not confirmed enough to justify an invasion of another country. We don't want war with anyone, we want to live in peace. The only reason we would "approve" of war would be the case of defending ourselves or befriended countries. But Iraq wasn't defending against anything. It was an attack.

Another problem with the "friend-status" is that even if we had this one chancellor who had the guts to tell the USA no, in general German politicians bow down to the States word. Even against the wishes of their own people. It's been always like this. Right now we have a new chancellor and of course the first thing she did was bowing. Now we are at war with Iraq and the thing is, they openly lie to us about it. They tell us our soldiers just do humanitarian help. Though it's proven that our soldiers work with the other countries stationed there in attacks. Still, they claim it as untrue and lies... It is absolutely disgusting.

Well, what I mean with the long talk is that like you, I don't think this is right. I'm glad the USA as a country is our friend. But in my opinion, this doesn't necessarily means one country should do to the others bidding. The States are without question more powerful than most other countries in this world, but that shouldn't imply the other ones aren't heard or get told off if they don't want to play along. I would also like to state that this is only an example regarding politics between the States and my home country. I don't like it, but it's peanuts if you look at the countries which suffer the most under this kind of politics and to be honest I'm ashamed for German government to partake in it. There are people suffering and dying out there on every side. And, for what? For a lie. It's a sad, sad time for so-called democracy. No country and no Alliance should be allowed to play "world-police".

Our only problem is that in four years things will be worse when President Obama leaves, especially if those Nazi Republicans take over the White House.

I admit I don't know much about American inner politics, so I wonder why you would you call the Republicans Nazis. I mean, they seem to be more conservative and a lot into religion, but are they really racists?
