Maxon all the way! Aspen totally blew it when he broke up with America because being with her hurt his pride.

*First, please know I just finished this book and I'm NOT happy with Aspen AT ALL!! So my anger is directed only at Aspen and no one here :)*Aspen is selfless and truly loves her...REALLY?!! He has her "best interests" at heart...are you kidding me?!! Maybe in the beginning, but now he's just selfish! How is getting her killed for treason, loving her? Letting her live as a lesser caste is acceptable, but getting her caught and killed for treason is rational? He doesn't want her for any greater good, or to change things for anyone but himself. He was drafted so now he thinks he's acceptable for America? So, now that he feels better about himself, he can break her again and add their families into the mix? He has understanding of being a 6, he's a good soldier... what else you got?
Who really ends up paying for their lust now? Their families!! Because it won't be him, death is quick, oh and that's right America would be dead too. But don't worry Aspen, at least you "got the girl", right? Instead their families are left to mourn, nothing changes for society, and their already struggling families get to face the far reaching repercussions of their "love". Yep Aspen, you're right, you DO love her...barf!! Aspen wants America because he misses her. Their "love" is immature and selfish. So they get together...what about all of their family and the country? The story would deadpan.
Aspen doesn't want to change things unless it means he can "have" or "provide" for America, their families situations wouldn't change and that means something to both of them. Although, Aspen seems to forget that quite a bit. There is a line that Aspen crossed that makes him just selfish. Don't have her sign up for a contest, let her go to "save" her, break her heart, and then say,"Oh, never mind. You want to commit treason instead?". Who does that? They are both young and need to learn that choices come with consequences. Aspen made a choice, now he can reap the consequences. There's no back-sies or do-overs, Aspen needs to grow up!
I think the relationship that would bring about a better growth in America as a person and Illea as a country would be with Maxon. Maxon is ready and willing to learn from and listen to America. What she says matters to him, what she THINKS and FEELS even matters to him. Because he, get this, ASKS her!! America and Maxon have understanding from both ends of the spectrum they're a great compliment to each other. How can America see and learn about the higher classes to influence change if she's with Aspen? If they got together they would only have bitterness for the upper classes and no true understanding.
So, I agree, I don't like Aspen - he IS an idiot!!

If you say goodbye, you stay GONE! She was starting to move on and here he comes saying he changed his mind. Who could think straight and move on when your "first-love" comes back and is kissing you. Plus, he doesn't even have the decency to STAY AWAY! By not staying away, he undoes his "selfless" act and becomes completely selfish!! I am glad America is taking a step back and really looking to see if she really does love Maxon.
"“He’s more than I ever imagined he was.” ... The door clicked shut, and the sense of peace was overwhelming. Since the Selection had started, I’d been worrying that it was something that was going to ruin my life. But in this moment, I couldn't think of a time that felt more right... The Selection was no longer something that was simply happening to me, but something I was actively a part of. I was an Elite. I pulled back the covers and leaped into the morning."
I understood Jacob in the Twighlight Saga, but I can barely tolerate Aspen, LOL! I really will cry if she chooses Aspen.
@ natlovesgodyou never know how they're relationship was in the past, you never get that story, and yes Im on team Aspen
Cara wrote: "I guess I can see that, but all other male characters in the book pale in comparison to Maxon (for me at least)"I think that is just how Maxon is defined, how he is meant to be. Although Mer still holds a candle for Aspen, she knows he is not right for her. What a stuck up pig of an alpha-male he was in the early part of the book. But maybe in The Elite, he changes - for the better. I can't believe he would be written as one dimension. No - I think there may be more to him than that. Maxon, well, he's refined, genteel - a gent - and a prince, no less, it's no wonder girls will root for him. As to the question - I don't like nor dislike Aspen, but he's not worthy of Mer. Celeste, maybe!
I think perhaps we will be learning a lot more about Aspen. After all I don't think Kiera Cass would create an unlikeable love interest. What would be the point in that? I reckon Aspen is going to play a significant part in the Elite. I just hope America doesn't decide on Aspen. Did he actually say the word sorry when he was explaining himself? I can't remember...

I'll probably never read a book again... just kidding, but I will be really mad!
Ariel wrote: "You know my least favorite character? Celeste. That. Girl. Is getting. On my nerves! That is one thing I don't like about Aspen. He likes Celeste! Ew. Oh, TEAM MAXON is spelled like TEAM MAXON..."TOTALLY! Team Maxon forever!
Ariel wrote: "I agree."YES! I mean Aspen seems nice to his family, but now he's jealous that Mer is happy with another guy, and he wants her back, I think, simply so that she's pawing after him and her attention isn't spent elsewhere!
Jess wrote: "I think he is a great person but not for America."I agree with this. i really liked Aspen a lot until I got to know Maxon more. I think Aspen was just frustrated with himself for not being able to provide for America and sadly he took it out on her.

So very true - so long as it was just him (Aspen) and Mer, he could say 'I do so much for you' etc etc...then he treats her like rubbish, then even claims he is breaking up with her, to help her in The Selection. This guy is so full of himself, I'm amazed he has room in his life for a woman! I do like that for the most part, Maxon seems like a gent. I'm waiting for the roof to fall in on that one though...how can he keep the 'front' up? Not sure I'm on Team Maxon, but I'm definitely NOT on Team Aspen!

To be fair to Aspen, a lot of men will feel like this in his situation (frustration at not being able to be the provider) but at the same time, that does not excuse his behaviour towards Mer, who seems decent pre-and-post-Selection.

It's hard to see anywhere in the book where Aspen comes off well...perhaps this it what Keira intended!
Who would like Aspen!!!!!! So Team Maxon!!!!!
Natlovesgod wrote: "omg! when in the book is he not making out with her or just lusting for her?such a slob! GO DIE ASPEN"totally and I'm agreeingwith all the ladies that say he's a sexist butt!!!!!! I don't get his twisted perspective and dont want to!!!! there is not a single explination theat could have me like or even just tolerate his butt-like behavor... Sorry Aspen lovers i got carried away:(
there is just no way that America is going to end up with Aspen as we have barely been introduced to his character..but everything could change in the second book...and it could be kinda like a Gale/Peeta/Katniss situation...but i so prefer Maxon <3 but love gale
I did like him in the beginning but then he broke up with her and when he came into the palace while the selection I was just pissed.
Really do you even have to ask no Aspen your pride got in the way and blinded you what he did was not romantic it was stupid and he threw a once in a life time girl away so why should he be given another chance to have her back. Maxon all the way i will be very mad if America ends up with Aspen instead of Maxon.
Aspen needs to crawl back to hell he came from and leave America alone. I see a few comments saying what Aspen did was romantic. You people are crazy I mean really look at him. America is happy with Maxon and starting to realizes her feelings are changing and Aspen has to show up and mess with her mind just back the hell up man. I just can't stand people like Aspen who give up something so special and then later decides they want it back. That's whats going to happen with Aspen but America moved on with her life so hes going to try and sabotage her new happy life. Since the beginning I didn't like Aspen and I'm Pretty sure I will never like Aspen.
Lauren wrote: "Aspen needs to crawl back to hell he came from and leave America alone. I see a few comments saying what Aspen did was romantic. You people are crazy I mean really look at him. America is happy ..."I know right! If he really put America's feelings before his own then he would be considerate that she has a chance for a great life with Maxon. (remembering how he wouldn't marry america because her caste was too low- if he cared that much about her quality of life surely being a one is better than a two?) And then instead of excepting that she may not like him as much as she used he said "I will fight for you!" Grrrrrr.
I really don't like Aspen, he dumped America for nothing!
Eml wrote: "Becky wrote: "H broke up with America simply because she had more money and food than him and wanted to share it? I just don't get it. What a stupid reason to break someone's heart."

Agreed.
It was b/c he..."
Agreed.
I like Aspen all these people are saying he broke up with her HE DID IT BECAUSE HE THOUGHT HE COULDN'T PROVIDE FOR HER!
Maxon? You've got to be kidding me. Maxon and America have known each other for a matter of months; Aspen and America on the other hand have known each other for years.
Aww, not I feel weird. After I finshed this book, I had this whole war about who I like better. It was really a hard choice, but Aspen won. I had figured that Maxon isn't all that he says, but I feel like what she had with Aspen was real. I feel like Maxon.... is untrustworthy. But it's probably just me.

Maybe you should read "The Prince" From his point of view. I think Aspen should get an E-book too, it would be interesting to see more about the start of his relationship with Mer mayhap?

Maybe so, but he sure had one heck of telling her. If he had truly cared he would have would have at least told her so in a nicer way. Then not make her feel guilty/ be all over her instead of just telling her why he was holding another girl, etc. He seems to be using her!
Sabrina wrote: "Monique wrote: "Eml wrote: "Becky wrote: "H broke up with America simply because she had more money and food than him and wanted to share it? I just don't get it. What a stupid reason to break so..."Yeah he was kind of mean, wasn't he?
So I realize this thread is over a year old, but I just came across the "I'm a man line" and I want to throw the book across the room. Please forgive my belated ranting.I understand that he's worried about being afraid of not being able to provide for her, but I'm disappointed that the author chose to have it boil down to a gender-role statement. It makes him seem like a dumb sexist, rather than someone who is truly concerned for her welfare.
It really rankled me that in such a desolate society that who makes more money (a man or a woman) would ever *matter* so long as both sides of the couple were doing their best, and the family unit was cared for (to the best of their means).
I think if he truly loved her that both Aspen - an the author - could have written a stronger, less archaic (not to mention destructive, given the state of the world) argument.
Becky wrote: "H broke up with America simply because she had more money and food than him and wanted to share it? I just don't get it. What a stupid reason to break someone's heart."Amen. He is as dull-witted as a broken pencil.
I think it sort of makes sense that he broke up with her for the reasons he did, he was trying to say that he couldn't provide for her and he wanted to be able to. But why didn't he break up with her before? Hadn't they been "dating" for like a year? Why did he JUST realize that he was poor and never in his wildest dreams help America by providing for her? And the entire time they were sneaking out, one of them could have been caught. If that happened, they both might be in serious trouble. So why didn't Aspen, who loves America *so much* that he breaks up with her because he can't do anything for her, risk her possibly going to jail? The author tries to portray him as selfless by breaking up with her and letting her have a better life, but when you think about, risking her ruining her entire life just so he could have her love is pretty selfish. I get that they had to find a way to fall in love first, it's excusable that they both snuck out for a while to get to know each other, but he had to have realized at some point what the "love of his life" was risking when they were doing that.
(*sorry if that didn't make any sense, and I didn't mean to offend anyone, I still like Aspen, I think he's a great guy but that is just my option on that part of the book*)
You know what.In the beggining I wanted Aspen.
Then I wanted Maxon for a very long time.
Then it was on and of again for quite a while.
In the end it's America's choice ( And in the one cover it was quite ovious who she was ending up with! ) and its who she loves. In the end I wanted Aspen but I'm also happy he met someone else!
Becky wrote: "Nope, he's an idiot"Why is he an idiot? You can't just say he is without an explanation!
CrimsonGhost wrote: "Aspen is really greedy. America really loved him and he uses her."WHAT? How was he using her?!?!?
Absolutely not.Aspen was so selfish and cowardly, especially in the first book. He disregarded everything he "felt" for America and acted rashly, not thinking of the consequences. He just got scared and dumped her because of his own pride. On top of that, he just makes her time in the competition that much harder because he realized he had been a jerk and tried to win her back. Not A-plus boyfriend material.
I think that Aspen and America were drawn to each other initially because they did like each other and their relationship kept going because it was heightened by the excitement of their secret meetings. It made it seem more than it was. In reality, Aspen is the kind of guy who likes to be a protector and America was too independent for him. She was able to take care of herself and even him too, if she wanted to. That wounded his pride. Lucy suits him much better because she was more fragile and in need of a protective man to help her regain some confidence.
Oh please! He's a jerk! Self centered! Mr. Whatever! And all!
I'm with Prince Maxon Schreave! ♥ ♥
Everytime me and my friends talk about Prince Maxon..
we go....CRAZY!!!!!!!
like... I wanna marry him, I wish I was America! Gosh!
I LOVE Aspen! He really care's for America and wants the best for her. I honestly wished he ended up with America but to bad! :(
