Joybell | 17 comments Hi everyone, I'm on the hunt for a children's picture book about the marriage of Sir Gawain to the Loathly Lady. Note, this isn't the popular picture book by Selina Hastings and Juan Wijngaard.

What I do know about the book:

-Would have been published in the 80's, or possibly even late 70's

-Big, hardcover picture book. Reasonably thick

-The illustrative style is not classical. It's more...abstract. Bold lines, lots of colour and very detailed however. The best example I can give is that the pictures almost looked like highly detailed stained glass windows (if this makes sense)

-Although it's a children;s book, the text wasn't exactly simplified. I can remember reading this when I was around 6 (early 90's) or so and struggling with the medieval names.

That's about all I can recall unfortunately. I've scoured the internet to no avail as yet, but I'll keep the search up.

It's the pictures that I can remember most vividly, as they were totally different to anything else produced at that time. I haven't seen this book for 20 years, but the face of the woman, the green knight, and a page where Sir Gawain has the hag on the back of his horse are easily remembered.

The chances of this being identified are probably pretty slim, but there's no harm in trying!

Thanks for reading everyone :)

Published in 1972, Amazon has a cover picture that's very 2-dimension and stained glass-y.

Amazing! This is the book! I'm really pleased to see it's still available for purchase.

Thanks a lot for finding it for me, guess I must have been on the wrong path :):)
