Ashley (readerandwriter) I recently finished "Shadow Kiss". I am now reading "Blood Promise".

message 104: by [deleted user] (new)

Oohh Ashley, how do you like the Vampire Academy series? This is my favorite YA vampire series that I have read so far.

message 105: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I really like it.It's not your typical vampire series. It has its own personality. Thats why I like it. It is very different from all the other vampire series. It's my favorite vampire series.

message 106: by [deleted user] (new)

I felt the same way. :) Enjoy Blood Promise! It's a good one. I read it straight through to the end so I could find out what happens.

Dana Duffy Backs | 25 comments Pollyanna - Did you read the Time Travelers Wife? It's one I'm thinking of reading next. I'd also like to read Ash I just finished Godlessby Hautman. It was funny and irreverant.

message 113: by Pollyanna (last edited Nov 25, 2009 05:53AM) (new)

Pollyanna (polly8) Yes I finished The Time Travellers Wife a couple of weeks ago, it is okay, I gave it 3/5 stars but a lot of people love it. I just found it too vulgar at times and I didn't connect well with the characters.

I recently read Anne Frank The Diary of a Young Girl and I thought it was a great read, I recommend everyone read it.

I am half way through The Bell Jar at the moment and loving it, I can see this being a 5 star read.

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) I just finished Sucks to Be Me The All-True Confessions of Mina Hamilton, Teen Vampire and thought it was a really cute twist on the normal teenage realistic fiction. Pauley keeps the character true to her teenage tendencies while throwing in some fantasy (and humor!).

Synopsis: Mina is named after a female character in Dracula, which is ironic because her parents are actual vampires. Mina has always known about her parents true identity, but she soon finds out that the Council of vampires did not know about her. Thanks to her parents dodging of the Council, Mina has been able to avoid vampire law and stay with her parents. But now, at age 16, she has been discovered and must make the biggest decision anyone can be asked: become a vampire and stay with your family, lose your friends and home OR stay human and stay with your friends, but lose your family. To help her accomplish this huge decision, Mina is given a mentor in her Uncle Mortie and is forced to take Vampire classes two nights a week. All this is going on, but Mina still has to live her life as a normal teenager- trying to figure out who to go to prom with, how to keep a huge secret from her best friend and how to get her crush to ask her out.

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) I finished Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians by Brandon Sanderson.

Alcatraz breaks everything. Some say he destroys, but he swears he only breaks and doesn't do it on purpose. Because of this, he is sent from foster home to foster home, being given up on whenever he breaks something that his foster family loves. The lastest is the kitchen. By breaking the gas stove and pot, Alcatraz sets fire to his foster family's kitchen. As he is about to be moved again, an odd, old, spry many shows up at Alacatraz's door swearing he is Alcatraz's grandfather. At first Alcatraz would not go with him, but when he is face to face with the chance of death, a crazy, old man seemed like his best choice.

After going with Grandpa Smedry, Alcatraz soon begins to learn things that turns his world upside down. The world is really run by evil librarians, hiding important information from us "Hushlanders." Alcatraz soon begins to learn that what he has always known is not the truth.

Pollyanna (polly8) I have just finished Guitar Highway Rose by Brigid Lowry. I really enjoyed this book and gave it 5 stars. I would recommend to YA lovers as it is about 2 teenagers and their troubles and the road trip they take together. The writing style is so different to any other book I have read but I think that made it more fun to read.

I cannot wait to see what the winner is! It will be my next read if I haven't read it yet!

message 120: by Pollyanna (new)

Pollyanna (polly8) I just started Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer last night and it seems quite promising so far, the story has started straight away which I love. I don't like it when an author spends about 100 pages writing before the story really begins.

I am pretty excited about reading that book- it is on my list for this month. I have some students who absolutely adore the series.

Amy (aaammmyyy) I LOVED Life As We Knew It. Awesome stuff :o) And right now I'm reading A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin.

A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1) by George R.R. Martin

Dana Duffy Backs | 25 comments I'm reading Unwind It's a little preposterous, but a good fast read. About the future when parents can decide to deconstruct their kids, and farm out their parts, if they don't want them anymore. Yikes.

message 125: by Tess (new)

Tess Holthe | 13 comments Amy,

That's the second time someone has recommended A GAME OF THRONES. I'll have to pick it up. Awhile back i was lamenting that we didn't have more Lord of the Rings type books and a neighbor handed that to me. Right now i'm reading A NORTHERN LIGHT by Jennifer Donnelly based on the true crime from 1906 that Theodore Dreiser based his book---AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY on. (And the subsequent movie with Liz Taylor/Mongtomery Clift/shelley Winters A Place in the Sun). I can't gush enough about this book, the female character, the romance, the longing, and searching for one's place in the world. Donnelly's book is one of my new favorites! I hope you read.

Tess

message 126: by Amy (last edited May 18, 2010 04:27PM) (new)

Amy (aaammmyyy) @Tess: Actually I've already read A Northern Light already and think it excellent as well. The author has a new book out in September called Revolution and I'm definitely going to read that one as well. And yes, I have to agree that A Game of Thrones reads in the vein of Lord of the Rings and is quite the epic fantasy!

message 127: by Katie (new)

Katie (kahneks) I have been reading tales of faery lately... Wings (Wings, #1) by Aprilynne Pike , The Iron King (Iron Fey, #1) by Julie Kagawa , Radiant Shadows (Wicked Lovely, #4) by Melissa Marr , and am currently reading Wondrous Strange (Wondrous Strange, #1) by Lesley Livingston ...

message 128: by Kellee (new)

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) I am currently reading a short story set by Christ Crutcher: Athletic Shorts: Six Short Stories. I don't know how I feel about it yet. The first story was pretty good, but I know some of the other stories are about characters from some of his novels which I haven't read. We'll see hwo it goes.

Christy (christy_hb) | 2 comments I'm reading I Am Regina. I like it so far. Although it is a little graphic in its violence, it seems to be a good middle grades Historical Fiction about a young girl who is kidnapped by Indians in western Pennsylvania during the French and Indian War. It is a fictional account based on actual events.

Lemony Snicket's I've read the first three. I've watched the movie, but I don't feel like buying any more. I might check the rest out of the library sooner or later. I think the story is interesting and how it twists to somewhat good endings, but it does get a bit repetitive.
Adriana wrote: "I started reading Dangerous Girls and I will start reading Dangerous Girls 2 this weekend."
I have that, I think. Is it by RLStine? I - I have that first one on my book shelf-waiting to be read. How was it?

Vampire Academy is good! Real Good. Ofttimes I find I like it better than the Twilight Saga. I'm waiting on reading my library books first before ripping through SB (which is out now.) I have to add the others to my TBR list I have Hunger Games and Catching Fire on my bookshelf (waiting patiently with the others there... they all vie for my attention!)
Rampant will have to be added to my tbr list too.

Hm, you'd like Girl Got Game (manga) it's a girl pretending to be a boy to play a sport ;) .. I think there's a disney movie that has the same basic idea too. Anyway I will have to add this ... "real read" (as i'm not pretty) to my TBR list ;)

Both TBRed for me... I saw it in Borders a few months ago and it caught my eye... Wasn't it originally published under a different title? I don't know. I thought I read something like that on the cover of A Northern Light.
Katie wrote: "I have been reading tales of faery lately...Wings (Wings, #1) by Aprilynne Pike, The Iron King (Iron Fey, #1) by Julie Kagawa, Radiant Shadows (Wicked Lovely, #4) by Melissa Marr, and am currently reading Wondrous Strange (Wondrous Strange, #1) by Lesley Livingston..."
Wings is fantastic - Spells the second in the series is what i'm working on now. I love Pike's faerie mythology. It's fresh and new and unique. The others I've spotted and have some intrigue for too. Though, Radiant Shadows and Wondrous Strange sound a lot like the name for Wicked Lovely (which is great btw)...
Kellee wrote: "I just finished Neil Gaiman's Sandman series. So fantastic!"
I have to say Gaiman is great. I recently read the Graveyard Book and it's great.

I am currently reading some library books: Stargazer (Evernight: 2), Faeries of Dreamdark: Blackbringer, Spells (Wings: 2), Leviathan, ... and others that are back-burner-page-turner-non-library-reads.... Dead Until Dark, Inkheart, Eldest (Eragon: 2), She's Coming Undone, and rereading Ella Enchanted for the 8th time since 2000. I have finished Demon Princess 2: Reign Check, and Thirsty (which turned me off at first, being that it was written in first present pov, but I liked it anyway).

Sarah (YA Love) (sarah_yalove) I finished Mockingjay earlier this week, and now I'm half-way through Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins. Dana Duffy Backs | 25 comments I am reading The Water Seekerat the moment and it is a great historical fiction read. It kind of reminds me of Gap Creek. It's set in the 1830s-1850s in rural America. I recommend it if you like historical fiction.

message 140: by Dana (new)

Dana Duffy Backs | 25 comments I just finished Ship Breaker(author of The Windup Girl ) It's a sci/fi dystopia story about a future America where old, decrepit oil tankers litter the beaches, and kids (because they fit) are employed to strip them of their precious metals. It's the first of a series, a great read for both boys and girls.
