I think it is set in the 1800s. The main girl and her friend are coming over on a boat and the friend falls in love with a sailor so the girl decides to take her place in marrying the trapper. He is an older widow with young children and takes her to his homestead in the backwoods. The do not like eachother but fall in love over the course of the book. She is very interested in herbs and serves as a doctor in the area and takes care of the children. I think it was possibly translated from french

That really sounds like it has to be Martel's The King's Daughter, as a couple of others have said above. Not 1800's of course, but the 1670's.
