So I didn't find any similar topics but I do apologize if there is one.

Anyway, with my tax refund coming I want to treat myself. I'd like to get an e-reader but I'm interested in more features than just e-books. I don't speak "tech-speak" so I'm not sure what's good and what's not. Right now I'm looking at the Nook HD+ but I've also heard the Kindle Fire is a good one. I'd also rather not spend more than $400.

It'll be a couple week before I can get anything and I'm not 100% on how much my refund will be. Right now I just want to get some ideas.

Any recommendations?

I'm also really looking at the Google Nexus 7.

Robyn (seawitchrecovers) | 50 comments Hello Manette,

I have a standard Nook Color from a few years ago. I love it for reading (and for the Goodreads App!) but I don't like the email function or the web browser. There aren't a lot of apps for Nook yet (like facebook! if you can believe it!) so I don't have many on it. I'd say if you want something just for reading a Nook would be good, but if you want fancy-smanchy something else might be better.

Best of luck in your search!

Heather Perkins (queenallie03) | 9 comments Bit late to the game, but I bought my MiL the Kindle Fire. She absolutely loves it. We did the without special offers so there wouldn't be ads and it was just 175$ for the regular, 32 gig HD is 264$. You don't really need to move to the 4G 8.9" screen which is when it starts to get over 400$(especially since with that one you'd have to buy a data plan).

The best way to settle it is that it sounds like it's mainly going to come down to content. You should look online at the app stores of each that you might want. Then look at cnet.com for reviews, like http://reviews.cnet.com/kindle-fire-hd/ they break it down nice and easy. Plus I found an interesting paragraph in a tablet comparison you might be interested in:

"Best sub-$200 color tablet: Google Nexus 7. There are at least three great 7-inch, $200 tablets on the market today: the Nexus 7, the Amazon Kindle Fire HD, and the Barnes & Noble Nook HD. All are worthy of consideration, but the Nexus 7 comes out ahead in overall bang for the buck. And it's the most versatile: unlike the "curated" app stores found on Kindle and Nook, the Nexus 7 offers the full Google Play app store, which is second only to Apple's. That said, we suggest installing the Kindle or Nook apps for reading, since both offer better selections than Google's in-house offering.
Best midsize tablets: Want to go bigger, but still stay at $330 or under? The 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD ($299) and 9-inch Nook HD+ (just $269) offer supersized versions of their 7-inch siblings at still-reasonable prices. Straddling the line is the 7.9-inch iPad Mini ($329) -- the most expensive option, but also the most polished, and with the best app store."

Hope that helps you decide!
