Amy Casey (mrscasey) Hey guys! Question for you: What are you reading?! Ok, another question: How are you liking it so far?! All right, one more--and this is the fancy one--how believable are the characters in your novel, and what does that add to(or detract from) your experience of the story?

Tony Riz | 1 comments I'm currently reading The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. At this time I'm almost finished with the novel, it's pretty interesting actually! Once in awhile there are pictures too, it helps because sometimes it's difficult for me to picture what is going on. For the most part the characters aren't believable because they're ghosts, but their personalities and motives reflect those of "real" people. It adds perspective to the main character's life. Also, it gives a look into the past because many of the ghosts are hundreds of years old.

message 3: by Steven (new)

Steven D | 2 comments I am Reading The Titans Curse by rick Riordan. I like how Riordan has set up the book and how he divides the chapters to keep you reading until the book is done. I think it may be a little unbelievable considering that the main character is only 14 years old and that he is traveling all over to fight monsters. Other than that his personality adds a lot to the book.

message 4: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Gre | 1 comments I am currently reading "Wicked" by Gregory Maguire. I am really enjoying the book. It is very different and very interesting. The characters are believable yet quite unbelievable at the same time. They are believable in their human traits such as their personalities but the characters in "Wicked" are mythical beings so their actions are not always believable. I think that both of these things actually add to the book. When I started reading it I knew it was about mythical things so I was not expecting the characters' actions to be realistic. I was expecting it to be a bit strange and it has not disappointed.

message 5: by Josh (new)

Josh Lar | 1 comments I am reading the book Crackback its by John Coy. I it a really good book so far because its about football and i enjoy reading about football. This book is about a high school football team that's dream is to make it to state it seems pretty believable.

message 6: by Josh (new)

Josh Swov | 1 comments I am reading the book Quarantine: The Loners by Lex Thomas. Its a pretty good book and it keeps you on edge about what comes next. The book is based in a high school and it seems like a normal school so they are pretty believable.

message 7: by Corrina (new)

Corrina S. | 2 comments I am now reading After Summer by Hailey Abbout. I really like this book so far, it is the second in the series and I also enjoyed the first. This book has 3 main characters that are teenage girls and they all have different personalities. They are very realistic because everyone knows at least one person that is like one of the characters. This makes the experience of reading it more relate-able and interesting.

message 8: by Emily (new)

Emily Sch | 1 comments I am reading a book called The Remains. I really like what I have read so far. It has been very exciting and hard to put down. The characters in my novle are very believable. They really enhance the story's mood and feeling of fear and worry. They also make the story more interesting becuase of their personalities and lives.

message 9: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Brecht (hannahbrecht) | 1 comments I am reading The Scorch Trials by James Dashner. It's the second one in the series. Unfortuntaly, the plot is not as good as the first one, but I am still enjoying it. The actions of the characters are fairly believeable, but the basis of the story isn't. Because the story is based on a time in history where the world is pretty much destroyed, it is hard to relate to what the characters are feeling.

message 10: by Morgan (new)

Morgan | 1 comments I am currently reading the book "If I Stay" by Gayle Forman. It has a lot of things you have to pay attention to because it comes up again somewhere else in the book, wish is kind of difficult but other than that I love the book. I think that the characters are very believable. They live a very "typical" family life in my opinion and I can relate to a lot of it. How ever there is a part in the book where the two main characters end of living there dream and becoming famous and to me that is a one in a million chance so I don't think that is so believable.

message 11: by Hope (new)

Hope | 2 comments I am currently reading If We Kiss by rachel Vail. So far I think the book is really good. It has me really interested in a lot of questions I hope will be answered if I keep reading. I Like how this book is about a teenager life and a boy and right now a lot of us teenage girls are interested in boys or some teeange boys are interested in girls so it has a lot do to with the current live we are living in. I think the characters are very beliable in this book because i don't doubt that whats happening in this book has not happened to one of a teenager in school. This teenage girl and her realationship wiht her mother relates to a lot of us girls and our realationship with our moms. So i think that the characters can really relate to us in real life now.

message 12: by Hannah (new)

Hannah H | 2 comments I am currently reading Something Like Normal by Trish Doller. So far it's great, all of the characters are relatable and realistic! The main character was just a normal teenager in high school, who graduated and joined the marines. His sense of humor and extremely average home life is something that myself, as the reader can really understand. The way he deals with his ex and younger brother is hilarious, which keeps me wanting to read more.

message 13: by John (new)

John Spo | 1 comments I am currently reading the book Jumper by Steven C. Gould. The author does a fantastic job of creating this character who has some super-bad luck and emotions to go along with a great super-power. The main character, Davy, is extremely life-like besides his ability to teleport anywhere he has been before. His emotions, inner thoughts, and emotions account for more than half the book so far, and every detail about those three things compiles perfectly to make him seem like a real person I could actually meet. This for the most part is what captivated me and leads me to love the book so far.

-John S.

message 14: by Jacob (new)

Jacob Zeh | 1 comments I am almost finished with the book Out of the Pocket by Bill Konigsberg. This book is surprisingly good because it relates to the real world right now. The characters are totally believable and this just makes the story even better because I am able to understand what is happening and what the people are feeling. Then there is the sports aspect of the story which adds a little sizzle to the main theme.

message 15: by Will (new)

Will | 2 comments I'm currently reading 3rd book of the The Lord of the Rings trilogy; The Return of the King. I really haven't been reading it much because of the monomyths we wrote. But I like it so far. A lot of the characters are hobbits, elves and dwarfs. So even though they may sound and act real, in the back of my head I know that they aren't real. Because of this, it makes some of the more incredible feats they accomplish more believable.

message 16: by Emily (new)

Emily M | 2 comments I am currently reading the book Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephan Chbosky. I am really enjoying this book so far. It is one of those books you want to read over and over again. I feel like if I read this book again I will pick up on things that I didn't really understand before. There are some really sad things that happen in the book which makes it really emotional. Perks of Being a Wallflower is way different than any other book I have read. The characters in this story are extremely believable and relatable. All of the characters seem like they could be someone in your school and even some of your friends. I am really enjoying this book and I cannot wait to see what happens in the end.

message 17: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Lapean (PEPEPEANO) | 1 comments I am reading Magyk Septimus Heap by Angie Sage. It is the first book out of seven in the series. So far I think the book is great! However the characters in the novel are not very believable because they are all fictional like wizards. If the characters weren't fictional they would be pretty believable. The fact that they are imaginary allows for more creative thinking by the reader.

message 18: by Kaitlyn (new)

Kaitlyn | 2 comments At the moment I am reading Runaways by V.C. Andrews. It’s about four friends who live in the same orphanage and who are trying to make an escape plan. So far I am really enjoying this book, I can't set it down. I would say that the characters are believable because their lives aren't perfect and each one of them have totally different emotions. Their lives are actually very far from perfect. I mean I don't think there are many orphans who runaway all the way to California, maybe just to get away from the orphanage but from where the characters from my book live, I don't think anyone would runaway all the way across the country.

message 19: by Ben (new)

Ben V (BenVanZeeland) | 1 comments I am currently reading Kill Shot by Vince Flynn. This is the second book in a series by Vince Flynn that I began reading last year and it is a fantastic series that I look forward to reading in the near future. The story is really gripping and I can relate to the characters and their personalities. The characters are quite believable because they all have backgrounds in the CIA and some of the older members such as the Director have Cold War field experience to back that up. The main character Mitch Rapp is very realistic and I can visualize him and all of his actions well. This adds to the realism of the story.

message 20: by Sam (new)

Sam | 1 comments I am currently reading the book The Fighter by Jean–Jacques Greif. So far the book is very interesting. It shows how a person can survive in a rough environment and how he can thrive in it. I think the character is believable, some things are shocking about reading the characters living surrounding in the ghetto, but when you live in that environment you need to adapt, and being a Jew in an area where they are hated he needed to protect himself. He adapted by learning to fight, doing so to protect his family. I think this situation is very real and I could believe it.

message 21: by Taylor (new)

Taylor Pet | 1 comments At the moment I am reading a novel called Annie's Baby edited by Beatrice Sparks. I am about halfway through my book at the moment and I love it. My book is non-fiction, and is about a teenage girl who becomes pregnant after her boyfriend rapes her. Because my story is non-fiction it is obviously very realistic, as are the characters. The book is very detailed at parts and gives you a great idea of how things were for Annie during her pregnancy.

message 22: by Abby (new)

Abby Mau | 1 comments I am currently reading Secret Letters by Leah Scheier. I do not particularly like this book, I think I am going to not finish it and get a new one. So far, the main character is a little to weird for me. She likes Sherlock Holmes and is trying to find him. To me, this isn't an interesting topic. I do like mysteries, but something about this one just throws me off. The character is just too much of a die hard fan that it makes me not believe it very much. She is just kind of a boring character that I can't relate to.

message 23: by Tanner (new)

Tanner | 1 comments I'm reading Halo: The Cole Protocol. So far I like it. The main character featured in this book is Captain Jacob Keyes. Unlike the Spartans from the other Halo novels, Keyes is a Navy officer. He's gained command of a new frigate after being sidelined for injuries. When I read the novels with Spartans in them, a lot of language is used to simulate what the Spartans' movements are like. And how they can weigh a ton, and yet move like an acrobat. So it's easier for me to relate to certain feelings Keyes has and the movements he makes.

Justin Hill | 2 comments I'm currently reading Evil Genius By Catherine Jinks . At this time I'm almost finished with the novel, it's pretty interesting actually! Once in awhile it can be confusing and have to go back and re read , it helps because sometimes it's difficult for me to picture what is going on. For the most part the characters aren't believable because they are all like super humans , but their personalities and motives reflect those of "real" people. It adds perspective to the main character's life. and how they like how the school scual isset up and then they take that and make more of a mad scientiste approch to every thing some ex. of this are his first thing to do is to make explosives tought by trigger and pure evil tought by the maestro

message 25: by Caleb (new)

Caleb Nys | 1 comments I am currently reading Scorpia by Anthony Horowitz. So far I'm liking it very much. I've read the other four before this one and loved each one of them. It get's more and more interesting the more of these books I read. Personally I think the characters in my novel as real people. I'm pretty sure the main character is a real person in real life and these books are written after him. So while I'm reading, I imagine these characters as real people and picture there actions in the book. It adds way more action to my novel. I love reading books that have action and really get into them. Also it makes it easier for me to picture the setting of what's really going on as well.

message 26: by Brek (new)

Brek (BrekSim) | 1 comments I'm currently reading American Sniper by Chris Kyle. So far, I really like it. This novel describes everything that the author went through during his time in the armed forces. He describes the setting and all of the action very well, making it seem like you're in the battle with him. The characters are very believable, even though there aren't many and he had to make changes to their names because they are classified information. The story is from his point of view and he shows everything unique about the personality of each character.

message 27: by Grace (new)

Grace | 1 comments Currently, I am reading the book The Blue Tattoo by Margot Mifflin. So far, I am not really enjoying this book. It is a non-fiction book, which I am not really used to reading. It is, at times, not all that interesting or captivating. I sometimes will find my mind wandering while reading, instead of being focused on the story itself. In this novel, the characters are very believable, seeing as though the majority of them were real people at one point in time. Because this story is set in the past, however, it can be a little difficult to relate to the characters thoughts and ideas.

message 28: by Ian (new)

Ian A | 2 comments I just finished reading the book “No Safety In Numbers” by Dayna Lorentz. I think that the book was really well written and that the author did a phenomenal job putting it through a teenagers point of view. In this book the characters are very believable. Everything they do I could see multiple people I know doing the same thing. This really adds to the story for me because it is easier to picture and imagine what is going on.

message 29: by Sami (new)

Sami B | 2 comments I am currently reading Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead. I am finding this book pretty entertaining. Right now Rose, the main character, and her old teacher are in hiding because Rose was framed for killing their queen. This part of the book is entertaining because Rose doesn’t like to be out of the loop, so she’s trying some pretty extravagant ways to get out of hiding. The characters are believable through their human traits, but they are vampires, or some form of mythical creature, so they aren’t completely believable throughout the whole story. This adds an element of surprise to the story, because I never know what’s going to happen.

message 30: by Eric (new)

Eric B | 2 comments I am currently reading The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien. I am liking this book a lot even though it is taking awhile for it to get started. It was developing slow but now it has begun to get interesting and makes me continue to read it. My characters are believable even though they are not the average humans. They are called dwarfs in the novel and also the main character Bilbo, which is a hobbit as the title justifies. They make actions that as easily comparable to ones that myself and others have made in their own lives. Therefore the characters in The Hobbit are believable.

message 31: by Seth (new)

Seth I | 2 comments I am currently reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows by J.K. Rowling. So far I really like it. I have enjoyed reading the Harry Potter series from the very beginning and the last book in the series has been no different. I always have conflicted emotions while reading this book. On one hand I want to see what happens in the end, but on the other hand I don't want the series to end because I enjoyed it so much. The characters are not that believable because they all use magic or are not humans. Although, I could see some characters as ordinary kids in an ordinary school. For example I could see students in a normal school instead of Hogwarts that are similar to Harry, Ron, and Hermione. It does not take away from the story at all and I would say it even adds to the quality of the story. It makes the story more amazing and adds to the importance of every situation with the characters having the ability to do awesome things with magic.

message 32: by Michael (new)

Michael Win | 1 comments Right now I am reading The Outcasts by John Flanagan, and so far, I'm enjoying it immensely! The characters in my book are very realistic and easy to relate to. The story is set in Skandia, a land where kids are taught the basics of war techniques when they are about our age. The story follows a kid named Han and he goes through the same struggles most teens go through, so it's very easy to relate to.

Dalton W | 1 comments I am currently reading Point Blank by Anthony Horowitz. I think the book is very interesting and it keeps me reading. Mr. Horowitz makes his characters very believable because they are close to our age and he is very descriptive.

message 34: by Asuewin (new)

Asuewin X | 1 comments I am currently reading Holes by Louis Sanchar. This book is interesting and very easy to follow. The main character's name is Stanley and he's just like any other ordinary boy. At least until he gets sent to the camp. This camp is like no other. Only juveniles that committed crimes get sent to this camp. Stanley has a hard time fitting in at the camp because he is different compared to the other kids. This book is believable because it relates to kids that are around our age.

Tyler | 1 comments I am currently reading Thoughts on Fire by Dr. Frank McCluskey. Reading this book is very easy for me as well as entertaining so it keeps me reading. The main thing I like about it is that it talks about a topic I really like. The characters are so believable because they are real people.

message 36: by Bailee (new)

Bailee | 1 comments Right now I am reading Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins and I'm really enjoying it. I'm at the part where the second Quarter Quell is about to start and it's so intense. I blame this book for my lack of sleep at night! In my opinion, about half of the characters in this book are believable. One half are the characters that live in the lower class districts. I think these are the believable characters because their personalities are just like ours and their actions of rebellion are understandable for having a cruel president. The other characters are from the capitol. These characters are hard to believe because they enjoy watching the games and don't have many feelings for the people who are killed in them. I think having a mixture of these characters adds to the experience because there are characters that I like and can relate to and then there are others that I really dislike.

message 37: by Jacob (new)

Jacob Ba | 2 comments I just finished reading Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins. I really kind of enjoyed, but the book is not as near as exciting as the first two books. The beginning was really hard for me to understand because I really felt like not reading it because it was way too slow and not very exciting. After a while, the story got more and more interesting. I believe that some of the characters are believable and some are not believable. For instance, the people who live in the districts are believable because it is kind of like the world as a whole today. For the lower numbered districts they are believable because they live similar lives like us with having all these benefits of being wealthier. As the numbers of the districts get higher, they are still believable because they live a lot like some of the poorer countries with not very much in the way of entertainment or necessities. I believe the Capitol is kind of unbelievable in the way that they bomb their own territory and wipe out their own citizens. With the things that are going on with the districts, I believe it adds interest because you really never now when a rebellion will start up again and see how the Capitol responds to these rebellions, which often includes force.

Clayton | 3 comments a bit late for the party~
I'm reading The Warrior Heir, currently. The "Heir" series is hands down my favorite, due to strongly detailed characters. I am liking it, and the charachters are more than a bit believable. it seems each charachter has their own life- what I mean is, they don't all orbit the protagonist, Jack. they come and go, living daily, unique lives.

message 39: by Josh (new)

Josh Le | 2 comments I just started the book King Dork by Frank Portman, and i'm liking it so far. The main character is named Tom Henderson, and he is a very bright kid who is bullied a lot and only has one friend. His father is dead, and mom is kind of outta her mind in a mid life hippie stage, with a hippie husband which Tom hates. All the characters so far are very believable, their decisions aren't any crazy ones... so far and I thinks it helps really learning who the characters are in the beginning of the book.

message 40: by Samantha (new)

Samantha R | 2 comments I am reading the book Wake by Lisa McMann for my third quarter independent reading book. So far I like it, but I wouldn’t say it’s good enough to recommend to other students. It’s about a girl who gets sucked into people’s dreams whenever they fall asleep around her. I think the plot is good but I don’t like the author writing style. Obviously I could say that the characters aren’t believable because there’s no such thing as being sucked into dreams, but that’s not the thing that makes them not believable. The characters don’t react to situations as a normal person would. Like when the main character Janie gets sucked into a dream she looks as though she’s having a seizure and everyone acts like it’s no big deal when she gets up and walks away after it. The characters lacks of normal emotional responses make it hard to get into this book and truly enjoy it.
