Trying to remember a great book

I am trying to remember the name and author of a book that I read to my son and we really enjoyed. It is set in Africa and a monkey is trying to go hear a great story. He talks to an elephant and convinces him to go with him (and give him a ride) on the way they take turns telling tales and adding animals (who in turn tell a tale). the tales are african fables (I believe) and all but one were really wonderful.

I thought it was called the greatest story ever told or the best story etc but can't remember and can't seem to find it. Does this strike a chord with anyone?
