I didn't have a choice, unfortunately. High school. Undergrad. Graduate school. I finally read it for graduate school, and I was sorry I did. :-)

Never read it and don't intend too..It sounds so boring. It bugs me that a woman can become a millionare for writing such trash! I also have never read the 'Twilight' books and don't intend to do that either. I haven't even watched the movies of the book. And since fifty *rolls eyes* the book shelves are stacked with horrible literature...It's hard to find a classic now.

message 203: by Santino (new)

Santino (tinoprinzi) I don't want to read 50 shades. It's because of fads like that that all you see on bookshelves (especially on kindle bookstore) are trashy smut novels.

I think the worst book I have read was 'the portrait of an artist as a young man' I think it was by James Joyce. I didn't finish it. There have so far only been two books I have started and never finished, but the other one I still want t read it, whereas this one I don't want t see again.

It was so boring. I was halfway through and I couldn't even convince myself to carry on with the thought that I only have half left. I just couldn't do it.

message 204: by Silvia (new)

Silvia Turcios | 395 comments Unfortunatly, I did read 50 Shades and it was the worst book I have read in my whole life. The only good thing is that I didn't buy it, I borrowed from the library, so I didn't lose my money, just my precious time.

message 205: by Laura-Beth (new)

Laura-Beth Fifty Shades... didn't even finish it. Sometimes you just think life is too short as it is!!!

message 206: by Mia (new)

Mia | 49 comments I liked 50 shades. but I started reading them with the expectation of easy to read obvious ending deal.

message 207: by Luke Parr (new)

Luke Parr | 2 comments I think for me it has to be 'The Shade of Hettie Daynes' by Robert Swindell. I read it when I was in my early teens but I struggled to get through it; it's so boring! Nothing ever happens.

message 208: by Rachael (new)

Rachael F (rachaelreviewsall) Evermore - I can't even remember it that much, I just remember absolutely hating it. Then there are 2 series which I loved when I was 13/14 then reread when I was older and thought they were vile: Twilight and House of Night. Also House of Night is so poorly written that I couldn't even reread it. I don't know how much 14 year old self put up with it.

Wendy (temagami) | 54 comments 50 Shades was a stinko book...I couldn't finish it. And it will be an even worse movie but sensationalism will draw moviegoers to the theatre.

message 210: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (ferrychic) | 20 comments up till this moment the absolute worst book ever read by me is, A million little pieces, couldn't even finish it.

message 211: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (chelc13) | 22 comments the worst book i have ever read was a brave new world by aldous huxley

message 212: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 1 comments All Quiet on the Western Front. I had to read it in high school. I struggled through every page.

message 213: by Sam (new)

Sam (theliteraryhooker) I've read a few books that I've put down halfway through because they were dull or I wasn't in the right mindset to enjoy them, but I'll usually go back to them later. But last year I read a book for a reading challenge, XVI, and holy crap is was AWFUL. If it hadn't been for the fact that I read it as an eBook, I would have thrown the thing multiple times. Terrible, terrible book and the author had this holier-than-thou attitude that made everything even worse.

message 214: by Replicant Rachel (last edited Mar 24, 2013 01:34PM) (new)

Replicant Rachel Thoughtless by S.C Stephens is poisonous
I hated the characters, the plot, the cheesiness, the everything.

COMPLETELY HATED IT

message 215: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (catoo) | 2 comments The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. Couldn't finish it.

message 216: by [deleted user] (new)

The Twilight Saga...enough said...

Brittany Perry | 229 comments Bre~chan wrote: "The Twilight Saga...enough said..."

Probably not the worst but close to my top ten definitely. The plot was sound but, the mistakes oh the mistakes.

message 218: by Angie (new)

Angie (strangersights) Obviously I'm not alone here, but I think Stephanie Meyer is a singularly terrible writer. I also just finished a book called The Jynx which was absolutely painful. it was only through sheer determination that I even managed to claw my way through it. Just thinking about it nearly drops me into a coma.

message 219: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 37 comments I hate books where the 'mystery' is obvious and that blind freddy can spot. This happened with 'Before I go to sleep.' I figured it out in the first few chapters and thought 'it can't be this obvious, surely?' But it was. I think in this case the book will make a better movie.

Marika Chulz wrote: "Elle wrote: "50 Shades of Grey is the only book I've never been able to finish. It was just so... stupid & badly written."

Totally agree... I can't understand why the ratings are so high."

+1 here for me too - terrible writing, plot, and characters. Infuriating to read!

message 221: by Jo (new)

Jo Hogarth | 6 comments so funny I have to comment on this - I have no less than 5 good friends recommend 50 shades to me - they raved about it. I still don't get it - found it hard to get through and not that sexy either. I just got incredibly irritated by Anastasia. I think though that a lot of people are inhibited and the 50 shades book gives them a reason to be open about sexuality. That's the huge appeal not the book itself. SNL did an awesome mother's day parody on it that I loved ; )

Like I have said a million times Meyer is a one-trick pony. Forbidden romance, who doesn't do that? Host is just the twilight series condensed-

message 223: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 1 comments Worst book ever--"Forever Black." Terrible!!

message 224: by Nadia (new)

Nadia (ayanadia) | 4 comments After the Break by Penny Smith.
So confusing with the persona of the story jumping from one person to the next.
I don't feel any excitement or thrill at all while reading it.

message 225: by Kimi (new)

Kimi (hateeverybeautifulday) I'm probably gonna get it in the neck from a lot of fans of the book, but I'd have to say Catch 22. It was the first book EVER that I started and didn't finish. I just couldn't. I usually read 3/4 books a week, but it took me 2 weeks just to get to 100 pages. I developed a deep dislike of the characters, and I didn't enjoy what was happenig for reading the book at all. Any book that makes me not look forward to reading is not a good one!

message 226: by Liz (new)

Liz Barnsley (lizzy11268) | 8 comments I have a couple. I have a couple. Angelology by Danielle Trussoni and nowadays sadly, I find Patricia Cornwell books unreadable. Used to love her :(

message 227: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (temagami) | 54 comments I don't like Stephanie Meyer's books. She hasn't grown beyond the theme of vampires... the characters don't grow with the story. In the Host it's not vampires but body snatchers she writes about and the SciFy classic "Body Snatchers" has been overdone. I don't like Stephen King, but then horror isn't my genre.

Angie (strangersights) Brittany wrote: "Angie wrote: "Obviously I'm not alone here, but I think Stephanie Meyer is a singularly terrible writer. I also just finished a book called The Jynx which was absolutely painful. it was only throug..."

Really. I tried so hard to find the appeal in the Twilight books, and when I couldn't. I even tried to find it in the movies. And it was all just drivel! I remember having 7 or 8 friends recommend the books to me, so I finally gave in, and really, it felt like I was reading an unimaginative 13 year old's creative writing assignment. It was just....disturbing. I ended up putting the book down shortly after losing my faith in humanity.

message 229: by Mari (new)

Mari Sloan (marisloan) | 15 comments I have trouble reading any book with long, run-on sentences and passages of meaningless description that relate in no way to plot or characters. I picked up a book once by a famous -- very famous-- writer who did not believe in paragraphs. If what I am reading is bad enough it sticks in my head and I can't write. I have to put those books down and step away. An exception to the run-on sentence thing? Pat Conroy. He manages to pull them out as lyrical and I love him. Another quirk -- unless there is a compelling reason I have trouble reading books written totally in present tense. "He walks to the fireplace and looks into the bedroom. He wonders who is there?" A little of that goes a long way. And dots .... If a character has to resort to trailing away thoughts every few sentences I want to institutionalize it.

message 230: by Melissa (new)

Melissa I don't know if it's the worst I've ever read but Fifty Shades of Grey is up there in the top 5 just for the writing alone. It irritates me that this woman has made so much money from this series when there are so many other better authors out there who won't be nearly as successful in sales as this God-awful trilogy.

message 231: by Bill (new)

Bill | 9 comments It's hard to choose just one, but Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged is an easy and comfortable target.

message 232: by Ginger (new)

Ginger (beachreader121) | 5 comments The most recent worst book I've read was A CASUAL VACANCY by J.K. Rowling. It was very well written. It was perhaps the best written book that I've ever disliked. But I could not find one redeeming quality in any character. Not one. Each was flawed, and in the worst possible way.

I think the flaws are a good thing. That is probably what Rowling was going for. It is one of those things like who has nothing to hide or let the one who hasn't sinned cast the first stone. I think the novel asks a good question. Do we truly know anyone?

To Usul I totally agree; except that I will say the movies were a smidge better than the atrocious rag Meyer calls a book.

message 235: by Rincess (new)

Rincess | 24 comments Anybody ever read Taste by Kate Evangelista? Recently, that's the worse book I've ever read. Weak main character, insta-love, etc. etc. Seriously, what's happening with YA romance these days D:

message 236: by Rincess (new)

Rincess | 24 comments And seriously, you gotta wonder why! Hell, more books like 50 shades are coming up. It's very disturbing, man.

Also the reason I'm sticking with horror books these days. They're awesome~ Though they might be the reasons I'm getting nightmares this year...

Rincess | 24 comments Haha, sorry, typo. Our keyboard's turned weak because of the button smashing when playing games. Is that possibly your real name by the way? o.O

And I'm really starting to wish there's a like button in goodreads comment bar, cuz I agree definitely agree with Iz.

message 241: by Kay (new)

Kay D (kaylovesbooks) | 7 comments The first book of the Mortal Instruments series. Just awful. I didn't help that I read a bunch of the background on the author plagiarizing previous material.

message 242: by [deleted user] (new)

The books of Narnia just sucks, they are horrible, the movies are way better than the books! Ahh it just get me so angry!! don't read them please! :)

message 243: by [deleted user] (new)

Well in my opinion the movies are better than the books, honestly I don't recomend the books.

message 244: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Perry | 229 comments Really I loved the symbolism in Narnia. You know it was all based on Aslan being Jesus

message 245: by [deleted user] (new)

I liked the books more than the movies

message 246: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Perry | 229 comments books are always better

message 247: by [deleted user] (new)

True that^^

message 248: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Perry | 229 comments yes but there again Rowling was highly involved. Big disaster Eragon without a doubt.

message 249: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah they changed a lot in the movie but sapphiras voice and casting was nice though

message 250: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Perry | 229 comments the casting was okay they left out Katrina, Angela was all wrong. The whole back thing was underdone and the ending just plain sucked
