I started last night, but it just isn't grabbing me. I don't think Holt is going to be one of my favorite authors. :(

Misfit | 76 comments I'm hoping to get to it in a day or two.

Diane Lynn | 27 comments I will be starting tonight.

Sorry to hear it isn't grabbing you Jeannette.

Thanks, Lynn. I might give it another shot, but Holt's writing style just doesn't click for me.

((Glad to have GR back!))

Diane Lynn | 27 comments I really was able to read quite a lot of this book yesterday. I kept coming back to it (I was supposed to be doing other things) because I wanted to see what was happening to poor Davina. She really is rather naive, but that is part of the plan, isn't it? This follows the typical VH storyline which is just what I need right now.

Misfit | 76 comments I'm home sick with a nasty head cold, so may get this cracked open after I finish the latest India Black.

WhatShouldIRead I'm afraid I'm going to have to bow out of this buddy read too. Like Jeannette, it just isn't grabbing me. It might be my mood, but I find myself picking up the book, reading a few pages, then putting it down again and this is no way to read a story!

I can certainly see where you are coming from. It is slow moving. I don't know if this is spoilerish, so to be safe (view spoiler).

Misfit | 76 comments I've managed to read about 30 pages, but I had to go to work. I'll catch up with you later today.

Hannah (hannahr) I am (surprisingly) enjoying this one, although I can only read a chapter or so a night. I was beginning to think I just didn't enjoy VH anymore. That said, I do think her earlier novels (especially those written in the 1970's) are better then these later ones from the early 1990's. Or, perhaps I only think the earlier ones are better because I read them in my "formative" years? Anyway, I am liking this one so far :)

Misfit | 76 comments Just nearing page 100 and will be reading more over the weekend. Been deathly ill with a bad cold, so haven't made much headway. I do have a new reading buddy came to join me this morning.(view spoiler)

Awww, Starla's so sweet!

Sorry you're feeling poorly, Misfit. Hope you feel better soon.

Misfit | 76 comments Thanks ladies. I feel almost human this morning, but my poor nose is raw from all that contact with kleenex :/

Hope you're back to 100% soon. Adorable reading buddy :)

Yue | 6 comments I am re-reading again the book, and I am not SO into it as I was the first time I read it. Maybe because Davina is one of the weakest character Victoria Holt wrote. She is not much of a 'doer'.

But that aside, I always enjoy her style of writing, and even characters that looks suspicious, like Zillah Grey, are interesting to read.

Laura Since my book arrived yesterday, I've managed to finish this part a few minutes ago.

Misfit, I hope you are feeling better now specially since our buddy read may count on Starla now.

Davina's naiveté is quite excessive in my opinion. And the "not proven" verdict must change her life in some way. Lets see what happens next.

Glad you're able to join in.

Laura So do I!!!

Yes, Davina is so very naive. I had to chalk it up to her young age and sheltered upbringing or it would have driven me batty.

Hannah (hannahr) Agree on Davina's naiveté. She didn't seem to be as fiesty as Holt's earlier heroines - I always liked their independent spirit. Davina was pretty blah.

Yeah, I just wanted to strangle her at times.

Laura Poor girl, lets see if she grows up in South Africa.
