Hundreds of sci-fi movies have depicted hyperspace travel, where stars appear as streaks of light as the spacecraft in question surges forward. But according to a team of physicists, that's bullshit—and hyperspace travel would look a whole lot fuzzier.

Though more seriously, I think Cherryh has the best descriptions of hyperspace travel in her Company Wars & Compact Space books. She has generally avoided any discussion of frequency shift though it's certainly implied by her descriptions of time-shifted messages piling up in the incoming com channels of ships dropping out of jump.
