I will read option 1 - Six Feet Under (166 pp) - and option 6 - One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd (Historical fiction).
I'm a devoted Dewey RAT fan as well, Stacie! Just one minor note - the Read-a-thons are in April and October, not December. Great task!
Ann A wrote: "I'm a devoted Dewey RAT fan as well, Stacie! Just one minor note - the Read-a-thons are in April and October, not December. Great task!"I meant october! Don't know why I wrote december! Thanks for pointing that out!
Bea wrote: "I will read option 1 - Six Feet Under (166 pp) - and option 6 - One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd (Historical fiction)."Those will both work!
I have no idea what Dewey's Read-a-Thon is (I will obviously check it out asap), but I love this task because I fit two difficult books here. Yaay! Thanks Stacie!
Stacie, may I have this book approved for option 3? The Mystery of Mercy Close. It's a new book, and Humor may fall off the page by the time I get to it.
I'd like to read Beauty - Robin McKinley for option 6. It's listed as both young adult and children's and it's only 256 pages. Would it work?
Chaitra wrote: "Stacie, may I have this book approved for option 3? The Mystery of Mercy Close. It's a new book, and Humor may fall off the page by the time I get to it."Sure thing. If humor does happen to fall off the main page, be sure to let the moderators know that I had approved it.
Barbara ★ wrote: "I'd like to read Beauty - Robin McKinley for option 6. It's listed as both young adult and children's and it's only 256 pages. Would it work?"Sadly, due to the new rules, that book will not work for this task. Any children's book read for this task needs to have at least 300 pages. Sorry!

Thank you!
I would like to read Fushigi Yugi: VizBig Edition, Volume 1 by Yuu Watase for option 4 (Sequential Art > Manga). The book is a “Graphic Novel” of 600 pages. Can I count it toward a big book ticket?

I will ask the moderators. I know the rule used to be that graphic novels could not be claimed for big book tickets, but with the new rule changes, I'm not sure. I'll get back to you as soon as I know for sure.

I've checked with the moderators and that rule had not changed. Graphic novels cannot be claimed for big book tickets.
Claire wrote: "I just want to check that Star Wars Omnibus: Rise Of The Sith will count for this. Thanks"
Yes, that will work

Thank you
Stacie, thank you so much for talking about the read-a-thon! I've heard of it and always wanted to participate. Now I'll definitely be watching for that April date!
Stacie, can you start a separate thread for the Read-a-Thon. It sounds like there are several of us who are interested in doing it. Maybe under Fun & Games or under Getting to Know You?
Mrs.soule wrote: "Stacie, thank you so much for talking about the read-a-thon! I've heard of it and always wanted to participate. Now I'll definitely be watching for that April date!"From Dewey's Read-a-thon's Twittter timeline:
@readathon
The April @readathon will take place on April 27th 2013!!! We hope to see you all there!!!!
I must get my reading list together.
Mrs.soule wrote: "Stacie, thank you so much for talking about the read-a-thon! I've heard of it and always wanted to participate. Now I'll definitely be watching for that April date!"It's definitely a lot of fun!
Donna Jo wrote: "Stacie, can you start a separate thread for the Read-a-Thon. It sounds like there are several of us who are interested in doing it. Maybe under Fun & Games or under Getting to Know You?"I'll see what I can do when I get home from work tonight. Great idea!

Thanks for the update Tallulah!
Pam wrote: "Sounds like it would be fun but 24 hours straight just reading i can not do that."Pam, you are definitely not required to complete the entire 24 hours. I've participated several times and I think 18 had been the max I've been able to do. By that point I am ready to drop!
I love the read-a-thon, too, but I never stay up for the whole 24 hours. It's not required and it's fun anyway!
I've thought about participating before, but never actually done it. It would be fun to have a group of friends -- maybe doing a Seasonal Challenge Tag Team.
Is there an official count for how many people have to classify a book as a certain genre? Reason I'm asking, I'd like to use If You Can't Stand the Heat for Option 3. "Humor" is on the book's main GR page, but only 2 people have classified it as such. Thx!
Suzanne wrote: "Is there an official count for how many people have to classify a book as a certain genre? Reason I'm asking, I'd like to use If You Can't Stand the Heat for Option 3. "Humor" is on the book's ma..."I believe as long as it's on the main page, the moderators will accept it. I'd be more worried about it falling off the main page before you claim the points. If that should happen, just mention in your post that I had approved it here.
Donna Jo wrote: "I've thought about participating before, but never actually done it. And withe reason for me to set up a separate thread for it (which I promise will get done today!)
Pam wrote: "I know someone said you do not have to do the whole 24 hrs. My problem is i would only be able to do a couple hours at a time off and on so i can get other stuff i need to done as well."That's ok, too! It's really up to you to set your own goals. Sometimes there are prizes that you can't go for if they are only offered during the time period you are gone, but otherwise, you can keep track of your own time.
Stacie wrote: "Suzanne wrote: "Is there an official count for how many people have to classify a book as a certain genre? Reason I'm asking, I'd like to use If You Can't Stand the Heat for Option 3. "Humor" is ..."Thanks! There really aren't too many tags on this book, so hopefully I'll be safe. :)
As per Donna Jo's suggestion, I've started a Thread in the Fun and Games section of the Group for the Read-a-Thon! Who's getting excited?
To all who's interested in participating, we are now able to sing up for the April 27th read-a-thon on the website!!http://24hourreadathon.com/
And remember, you need not have a blog to participate! I've used my Goodreads profile as my website when signing up. You also don't need to participate as a reader. You can be a cheerleader, host a challenge, or even donate a book as a prize.
Marwa wrote: "How about
for the shortish book (option 1)and
for the Children's book ..."The first book is fine. As for the second book, just make sure you read a version that has over 300 pages. Many versions have less and would not be allowed by the moderators.
I have the exact version I've posted above with the ISBN 9780099503859. It says 327 pages so I guess that'll work.
Marwa wrote: "I have the exact version I've posted above with the ISBN 9780099503859. It says 327 pages so I guess that'll work."Yes that will work
I'm going to read...Option 3: The Mystery of Mercy Close by Marian Keyes
Option 6: The Demolished Man by Alfred Bester (Fantasy & Sci-Fi heading)

Those work
Stacie, can I read a manga for Option 1 or Option 5? I finished re-reading
and would like to fit it in.

For the past couple of years, when Spring comes around, I’ve participated in something rather fun - Dewey’s 24-Hour Read-a-Thon! This event takes place twice a year, in April and October. And although the date has yet to be announced* for the April Read-a-Thon, barring a disaster, I definitely will be participating! *The date for the April Read-a-thon has been announced and it will be held on April 27th, 2013.
In honor of this fun, yet exhausting day, choose two of the following types of books and read one book for each.
According to the FAQ section of the Read-a-Thon website, Dewey's Read-a-Thon, the following options are all types of books that are the best to read during such read-a-thons:
1. “Shortish books” - Read a book with less than 200 pages, but keep in mind that all other SRC guidelines apply!
2. Children’s Books - Read a book with the genre “Childrens” found on the book’s main page, but fitting with the new SRC rules, is longer than 300 pages.
3. Humorous Books - Read a book with the genre “Humor” found on the book’s main page.
4. Graphic Novels - Read a book with the genre “Graphic Novel,” “Sequential Art,” “Comics,” or “Manga” found on the book’s main page
5. “Books that you already know well” - Reread one of your favorite books.
6. Read a book from the following list of high-interest, keep-you-awake books: Books To Keep You Up At Night, Again, keep in mind that the general SRC guidelines apply here as well.
Required: If you choose to read one of these books, let us know what heading you found your book under.
NOTE: Genres “Graphic Novel,” “Sequential Art,” “Comics,” and “Manga” may be used for this task.
Required: Please identify the options you chose when you post.
Enjoy, and maybe I’ll see you as a participator in the next Read-a-Thon!
