Bree Dee--omg...how insensitive...i'm constantly amazed at what people do with out actually thinking it through....i agree with sarah "definately NOT made of awesome"

message 52: by Bree (new)

Bree I agree lets do "The Right Way to Live" brochure obviously there is an audience there, that could use it.

message 53: by Sera (new)

Sera No worries, Michele. Thanks for "hanging" with me, and I agree - no one likes pity, probably because in a way it's demeaning, even though the people who pity likely don't view it that way. It's just another thing that there is a fine line with really.

Dee- you know that I got your back, girl!

And, Meghan, for you my friend :)

message 54: by Arctic (new)

Arctic | 571 comments just wanted to say, I'm now on Facebook and can be befriended here. I'd love to see you fellow GG addicts on there too...

message 55: by Meghan (new)

Meghan Heather - I will only join if you start an Oregon Trail wagon! ha ha

message 56: by Dottie (new)

Dottie (oxymoronid) | 698 comments Oregon Trail? Oh my goodness -- how funny is that? In case the "funny" isn't as obvious as I think -- I used to be a teacher's aide at an elementary school.

message 57: by Meghan (new)

Meghan Oh yay Dottie! I hoped someone would know what the heck I was talking about. Except in "my" day, the arrow killing your cow would be made from dashes and brackets and move at the speed of slow. But boy did we fight over who got to press the space bar! heh

message 58: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Stirrat | 201 comments Meghan--I almost spit my coffee over the Oregon Trail reference. Certainly something I hadn't thought about in 20 years. I remember when we got Carmen Miranda in eighth grade. It was like we were the Jetsons, lol.

message 59: by Meghan (new)

Meghan I've refused to get a facebook account because I do not need another website to become addicted to! hee But when I saw on my husband's page that you could start your own Oregon Trail wagon, well, that was mighty tempting for me to go open an account! The computer version they have now just isn't the same though. I mean, it's actual pictures and graphics and stuff! No black screen and blinking green lights! So sad.

message 60: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) I have Facebook and Oregon Trail and I never ever play it. In fact I haven't logged into Facebook in months and I get really tired of all the "So-and-so has sent you an invitation" to all the zillions of applications. I don't know, i spend most of my online time here, and Facebook and Myspace have just sort of gone by the wayside for me.

message 61: by Nari (new)

Nari (thenovelworld) | 8 comments I have the usual Facebook and Livejournal account. I happily deleted my Myspace account months ago, and I do not regret it one bit. I've also started another blog on wordpress where I do more in depth reviews of books and new movies. Blog-bouncing is pretty fun. I just have keep to all my links grouped together, or else I know I'll forget to check something.

message 62: by Dottie (new)

Dottie (oxymoronid) | 698 comments I have a Facebook page for one reason -- one of the members of my original online book group Constant Reader (which I've belonged to since way back in the Prodigy message boards days -- what a decade ago?) invited those of us who wanted to follow her adventure vacation in the South Pacific to join so that she could when opportunity arose post journal entries and videos and photos to share. As it turns out my older daughter is also on Facebook and so it is a good place though I still spend most of my online time in CR and other Goodreads groups.

My younger daughter got me into the Ravelry site as she is into not only knitting but spinning, weaving and dyeing but largely I hang out there to see what she and her sister (also a knitter, crocheter) are doing. Books have always been one of the two top internet uses for me -- the other is genealogical research and I'm not settled enough to resume research yet so it's books -- and friends found through the love of books heading the web use for the moment.

The other thing is that I'm a computer "dummie" as the book series but the things which I know how to do with the lovely and irksome machines I do spend quite a bit of time on. Hee-hee.

message 63: by Arctic (new)

Arctic | 571 comments oregon trail - haha! hadn't seen that application yet, Meghan, but I'll look for it.

I think I had a myspace account for one week before deleting it. So when my older brother sent me a facebook link about a year and a half ago, I was really reluctant to join, even if it involved exclusive folk fest pictures of my nieces and nephews. Since then, I've had a few friends repeatedly mention it to the point that I finally caved in this week and signed up.

I'm still figuring out how it works, but it already seems much better organized than myspace, which really shouldn't be considered such a feat, but is.

the one thing I don't like about it so far is that the pages take forever to load, but I'm thinking that's a local issue.

message 64: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) A friend posted this video, ironically, on my wall. I love it.

OH MY GOOD GOD that was funny! I'd be hard pressed to outdo that! My mom came in to say something in the middle of it and I made her wait rather than pausing, I found it so dang funny!

What the heck is this Oregon Trail thing? I can honestly say I am completely in the dark on this one.

I have Facebook only because I have cousins in Canada that only do that (versus myspace). Most of my other cousins are on myspace, however, and that's often how we keep up with each other. I have loads of "top friends" only because the majority of them are family members! For that reason I can't get rid of myspace for sure... Facebook I rarely go to, so I dunno. Just like checking in with the far away family now and then. I did go on a date with a guy from there though, oddly enough! But that is a story for another time... hee!

message 66: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Michelle, you never played Oregon Trail in grade school?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Oreg...

message 67: by Sera (new)

Sera I've never heard of it either, and it looks like such fun - I'm sad that I missed out.

message 68: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Hmm, might be the 10 year age difference.

"The game was popular among American elementary school students in the mid 1980s to early 1990s. Many students in the United States had access to the game at school."

You would have been graduating high school in the late 80s while I was in elementary school.

Not that I'm calling you old or anything.

message 69: by Meghan (last edited May 22, 2008 07:06PM) (new)

Meghan Oh Michele and Sarah, I feel such great pity for you both for never having the experience as a second/third grader and the eager anticipation of being allowed your 15 minutes to play Oregon Trail on the brand new "computer"! (Although I have to say, I was an 6th grader in '85 and we were still playing it then.) My school was lucky because we had computers since I was in the second grade ('80-'81). I think that's rare for someone as "old" as I am. But OT is a classic.

I still have my myspace account since most of my friends are still old school that way. But I'm rarely on it any more. I just prefer goodreads because I have found meeting people through books is a better way to find more compatible (and well, likeable) friends than the randomness of these other sites. Also less internet stalkers here which is a plus.

message 70: by Shaindel (last edited May 23, 2008 06:29AM) (new)

Shaindel | 54 comments OMG. When I was in 3rd grade, this crazy fight between the boys and the girls broke out over Oregon Trail. The boys wanted to leave our sick girl baby to the wolves because she was using up resources and we couldn't stop and wait for her to get well, and the girls wanted to stop and take care of her. I will never forget it! There were girls yelling and CRYING. Quite memorable!

Here's a link to my online album of wedding pics at Facebook :-)

Hugs to all!

Shaindel: CONGRATS! Thanks for posting the wedding pics. What an awesome and unique way to tie the knot. I WISH YOU THE BEST!

P.S. I've never heard of Oregon Trail. The first computer game I ever played was called Lemonade Stand (sounds similar), where you had to order the right amount of sugar, water, lemons, depending on the chance of rain, etc. You had to use your "resources" wisely. Anyway...

message 72: by Meghan (new)

Meghan What a beautiful day. A bride couldn't ask for anything prettier!

message 73: by Arctic (last edited May 23, 2008 12:11PM) (new)

Arctic | 571 comments Shaindel - looks like your wedding was a lot of fun! Congrats again. great pictures. :) and hilarious OT story too!

I plan to use facebook kind of like linkedin, but for friends - mostly just to keep in contact with friends and also as a catch all for all these separate social networking sites I've joined. It's convenient to be able to have a social networking hub of sorts, for organizational purposes if nothing else.

and on a mostly unrelated note, but kind of similar to Oregon Trail, any one ever played the board game Settlers of Catan? pretty addictive. I think there's an online version around somewhere too.

Sixth grade in '85? Good GOD, woman! I graduated high school in '86! Going to school in the Silicon Valley, our schools got computers much sooner than other parts of the country... still the use of them in the classroom and the specific classes were all integrated into the curriculum the year after me - in grade school, junior high school, and high school. So my brother worked with them all the time, but not me. Needless to say, I have no clue about the Oregon Trail thing. Oh, and Miss Sarah, you'd better watch it with those age comments! Remember, I'm going to be there when you turn 30!!!

message 75: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Michele, I was in 2nd grade the year you graduated high school. Yes I know you'll be there when I turn 30, but you'll still be older! And I'll be drunk! Ha!

(I say these things to my husband, who's your age, all the time. Hee)

Just looked at the pictures, Shaindel. There was an awful lot of photo's of Lee, and not many of you... isn't it supposed to be all about the bride? LOL I think that's a cool place to have a ceremony. One of my favorite things is trail running or hiking. I'd just miss dressing up in the pretty white things!

message 77: by Jen Manning (new)

Jen Manning | 34 comments So this probably shouldn't go under this heading...but it is a random question. Did any of you know that the number of our comments on this site is actually noted when you look at the roster of members? I thought that was interesting.

message 78: by whichwaydidshego, the sage of sass (new)

whichwaydidshego | 1996 comments Mod
Actually, it's just the number of comments for this group, not the site as a whole. If you go to a different group and look you'll see a different number. You can also look at the members in order of amount of postings if you like.

message 79: by Erica (new)

Erica Poole | 199 comments Michelle, have you ever read "Tales of a Female Nomad"? Sounds like something you would like. FYI, I do a blog on blogspot.com, my sister and one of my friends read it. That is it. Sad, but I do it more for me, to get things out of my head, and it is TOTALLY random. I love it.

message 80: by Marisa (new)

Marisa (guitargeek0624) | 15 comments For those of you who have reservations about joining Facebook (which is, I agree, Internet crack), here's an incentive:

There's a Gilmore Girls application that allows you to put pictures and quotes from the show on your profile, and includes a never-ending trivia game that is one of my favorite procrastination tools. It's totally worth it just to get a Facebook for that!

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?i...

Anyway, there's my profile if anyone wants to friend me. Facebook is really awesome!

message 81: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) ERICA!!! I miss you. You never post anymore!

message 82: by Dottie (new)

Dottie (oxymoronid) | 698 comments Yeah -- that Gilmore Girls app is one of my favorites -- and the quiz is so addictive that I haven't played w ith it anymore since the first time when I put the GG app on my page.

message 83: by Arctic (new)

Arctic | 571 comments yup the GG app has become one of my favorites too. it has some really great quotes.

Erica, that's so funny you ask! I do have it and started reading it but then had a big life interruption, got into the group's books and recommendations, and haven't gotten back to it. But it is obviously one I do want to read soon.

I've been thinking more seriously recently about doing a blog... because I always have these random things to rant or rave about, or memories to share, and I end up spewing a few too many of them here... I don't think at this point I'd feel so much of the pressure of posting as I used to feel. It's the getting started that's always roughest!

Thanks for thinking of me... and you should post your blog here so some of us could go check it out now and then!

message 85: by Erica (new)

Erica Poole | 199 comments I miss you guys too! Things got a bit hectic for a bit there, we did a big move, mom moved in with hubby and me, and then Dad had a heart attack. All is well, everyone is doing fine, but it has taken quite a bit of attention and time. For a while there even when I had the time I just couldn't sit still at a computer (which made doing invoices fun!).

Plus I had no idea where to get started again! So many things going on! So how is everyone!??

Michelle, you should definitely do a blog! I would definitely read it!

I am mad about finding out about the GG application, it is the last thing that I needed to know about! Yay, more ways to stall cleaning!

Ok, here is my blog -

justbecause-erica.blogspot.com.

I don't make any claims that it is thrilling or anything to write home about. It is just me spouting off sometimes (good and bad spouting). I mainly did it because my sister did one and I liked it, and she is in Scotland for a year and it is a great way for us to keep tabs on each other when we don't have time for long updating emails! It works.

message 86: by Erica (new)

Erica Poole | 199 comments Sorry if I missed any good stories, seems like I am sure that I did. Everyone seems to be talking bunches about traveling. I miss traveling. I want to travel some more. I have been to Spain, Scotland, England and Curacao. I am dying to go to Greece, Morocco, India, Italy and Ireland.

Oh, Michelle, if you ever decide to do the tour guide thing, I suggest you do a tour for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals, I can be your interpreter! (shameless plug, i know!).

Michele, I'm still here! *wave wave* I'm at the office so I can't post much, but I still keep tabs on what's going on in this group. But yeah, it's been rather quiet. On the topic of blogs, I just started one last month but can't seem to keep it up in a regular basis *sigh*. My last post was like, two weeks ago?

*wave wave* Thanks Dini. Remember when this used to be a crowded party? Did we stay too long or are they really "coming right back?" Sheesh. I'm starting to wish for a "poke" feature. Heh!

message 91: by Erica (new)

Erica Poole | 199 comments I am here when I can pry my mother off of my computer - she is a Jewel Quest addict! I am only on now because she is sleeping already!! But I will pop in when I can, I miss it here.

So...what did you sign Michelle :) ?
