Neil Ostroff (httpgoodreadscomneil_ostroff) | 255 comments It’s the end of the month, which means my book sales stats will again be reset to zero. As I’ve mentioned many times before, it’s a little depressing to start each new month from scratch. Sometimes I think it would be nicer if they just kept the numbers going.

That said, I sold a pretty fair number of books this month. It helped that I ran two promotions and that Kindle Nation Daily gave me extra free publicity by presenting me with an interview by a fifth grader and then publishing it on their site.

I’ve also just finished up with my two-month long marketing frenzy and I am anxious, really anxious, to start back up on my latest Dystopian series. I finished the first draft of the first book back in January and have been letting it stew and simmer for the past six weeks. I’ve fleshed out the characters, setting, and plot and am ready to jump head first back into this one.

My marketing frenzy included downloading long samples of each of my novels to many popular writing sites. I don’t outright solicit my books, but do make mention at the end of the sample that the whole book is available. This seems to be working as my sales have continued to increase even weeks after my promotions ended. The sites keep a counter of readers and collectively, on all sites, I’ve had @ 9,000 reads in the last week. Not bad.

Here is a list of those sites. All of them are free, easy to download, and get great traffic. Do not spam the sites with self-promotion or you will be removed. These sites get readers, use them.

Nothingbinding.com

Scribd.com

Writing.com

Writers.net

Book daily.com

Published.com

Bookhitch.com

Writetobreathe

Worthyofpublishing.com

Wringroom.com

Bookmatchers.com

Writerscafe.org

Bookpleasures.com

Wattpad.com

ABCtales.com

Fictionpress.com

Shelfari.com

Authonomy.com

Ficwad.com

As I now plunge back into my latest book, I am still dedicated to placing writing samples on at least three new sites a week and will continue to update my existing samples. The more you update your samples the higher you will be placed on their new additions list. Good luck.

Don Martinez (desertcoyote13) | 57 comments I have experience with authonomy, and honestly you can take or leave it. The books that tend to get the most reads there are the ones whose authors whore them out the most (i.e. posting insane amounts of new messages to the "Shameless Self Promotion" board on the site's message board). The problem with that site is that it's pushing false hope: on a monthly basis the top five-ranked books (based on how many people shelve and read them) get submitted for consideration by HarperCollins editors to possibly be published. The site's been around for five years now, and to my knowledge exactly *one* authonomy novel has made it to print through HarperCollins.

Rebecca Douglass (rdouglass) | 212 comments Yes! I will be looking into those! So much to learn about marketing.

Neil Ostroff (httpgoodreadscomneil_ostroff) | 255 comments Don, that's true. But I'm looking for exposure and readers, not a publishing contract. Every little thing helps.

Judy Goodwin | 136 comments Interesting! I'll have to check these out.

Rebecca Douglass (rdouglass) | 212 comments I did come to something of the conclusion Don did after looking at Authonomy. Odds of getting picked up for a contract are astronomically low. But it could make some more exposure to readers.

message 8: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (fiona64) I had a rather unpleasant experience with Scribd, which eventually involved working with the Better Business Bureau in order to get them to pay me funds owed. Caveat emptor.

I had no idea there were so many places to get publicity.

Florence Witkop | 79 comments Thanks for the list of places to post my work. It's just what I've been looking for. Marketing sucks but it's an essential part of selling.

Oh, I hate that, too! Thanks for the post, Neil. Will check some of these out. I'm having fun connecting with other authors, but looking for more ways to reach readers, of course!
