Zoey is possibly the worst MC to exist in all of YA

I just bought this book at a used book store for 2 bucks since my friend is obsessed with this series and continually promises me that "things get better i promise"....well.......i haven't really seen any proof of that yet. Zoey is the most obnoxious, hypocritical Mary Sue i have ever had the displeasure of reading about. The saddest thing about this series is that the concept of vampires the Casts have in mind is actually very interesting and had so much potential to be good, but it was ruined by this fucking MC. And if you're wondering why i even read the books in the first place, i have a terrible problem with forcing myself to continue on with series.

Oh, she IS. Make no mistake. Bella Swan has nothing on Zoey Redbird.

I forced myself through to Burned and I had had it after that. Zoey was the worst part for me as well. From what I've heard they get continually worse, since you made it through Tempted, I'd say you gave it a fair shot.

Its my favorite series.

i never understood the hype either. dont worry, there are books for some to enjoy and others for others

How far into the series have you read? Because trust me, Zoey only gets worse and worse as the books go on. She's honestly one of the worst characters I've ever read about, and I can't see how there are girls out there who connect with her and even aspire to be like her. If you haven't gotten too far into the series, I suggest you get out while you still can.

I like the series but yes Zoey is the worst part.

First, you don't aspire to be like the characters you've read in books. If we did we would have had a whole generation or girls growing up into detectives, a la Nancy Drew. Second, if you think HON is bad then you haven't read Vampire Academy, Vampire Diaries, or Twilight. The essence of being morally bankrupt, whiny, annoying, entitle and bratty. Rachel Caine's Glass House is better and by far my favorite YA series. But if you want to read better books stop reading kiddy books. Jim Butcher, Kim Harrison, Ilona Andrews, and a host of others write about the paranormal with characters that are awesome, fun, and so well written you want to meet them.

Therealbadkitty I have read VA and Twilight. Bella is also an obvious Mary Sue but I find her more tolerable than Zoey, mostly because she isn't pushed on us as being ...more

I have much bigger issues with the HON series than the character of Zoey. I don't have issues with her multiple love interests and think she has some positive traits. It's the authors, their revolting stereotypes and ridiculous overuse of catch phrases that make me angry. Stop telling me every 5 minutes that a character (or characters) is gay. It's great to see different sexual orientations normalised in fiction, but these two are so terribly self-conscious about saying 'we're so cool we're okay with homosexuality' that there's no actual normalisation. I tend to stick with a series to see if it'll get better (call me a fool, call me a starry-eyed optimist), so I've lived through the authors infantilising the character Jack to a point where it feels like his boyfriend Damien (I think) is a paedophile and the use of 'heart' as a verb as in (quoting from vague memory here) "I heart me some Kenny someone" (country music star) to a sickening degree. I teach (Australian) teenagers and they sound nothing like these kids. Another stereotype I guess or are American teens from their part of the US actually like this?

Christine OMG I thought I was alone in how young they make Jack seem. Like I feel like he is so much younger then their group it feels awkward.

There's a beautiful moment where she loses her nyx tattooes ...

Somewhere amongst the other HoN threads, I put my theory for HoN's likability. Maybe that'll help?

Basically, it's like trying a new type of candy. Like chocolate covered pretzels, or chilli chocolate or something. At first you think it's rank, but then you try some. And the entire time it's in your mouth, you cannot decide if it's good or bad. So then you eat the whole pack, and by the end of the pack, you've realised how disgusting it is, but by then you're a little hooked.

Reading HoN is like that. There's good bits with Heath and Damien and Aphrodite and crap bits with Zoe and Stevie-Rae and Nerefet and by the time you've got to the end you realise the good is outweighed the bad but by then, you're somehow invested in the series.
