This is the March-April 2013 monthly book talk discussion for The Host by Stephenie Meyer! Feel free to spout any comments, questions or feelings you have while reading the book!

I've read it and enjoyed it, and then reread it and still enjoyed it :-). I'm keeping my fingers crossed about the movie.Any suggestions on how someone who's finished the book can discuss it while others are still reading?

I've read it too.. and Enjoyed it as well.. :)
usually, If one has read the book already can drop in any time and comment based on what others are reading and while at it, one can also mention what were the parts which made it a worth read etc..
In essence, It's Sharing your experience with everyone.. :)
It was okay. I liked the idea of wanderers & implanting souls. But the lines are too sappy & melodramatic.

I'll be monitoring and chiming in when I can do so without fear of leaving spoilers.
This is a question for the ones who have read it...So, is it a series too?? Because I've seen that it will be continued and I hate starting a book that is not yet concluded...

I don't know! I read it originally a couple years ago actually and I was told it would be a series but I mean it's been at least 5 years and the next book hasn't come out yet, however it's not really the kind of book that requires a sequel either

I agree with Gorfo -- it's a completed story with room for more stories to come.
I have this book setting on my shelf but it seems so hard to get started on. I don't know why. I think it's the name, it doesn't intrigue me.
The name is not particularly informative -- but if you start reading, you may well get hooked.

Now that "The Host" about to release Twilight author Stephenie Meyer's this lit sensation does not have any sequels in place just yet, though Meyer said they have been outlined. Chances are everyone in her circle will wait to see how the movie performs; if it's a smash, perhaps The Seeker will be announced after opening weekend.

Oh so the second one is definitely going to be called the Seeker, I have to hand it to Meyer, if that's the plan she has a publicist that has great marketing strategies!
Oh Lord, I know that a lot of you like this book but I'm sorry to say that if it continuous the way it is in the first nine chapters, it will be a lonely star for me up there!! Aliens is one subject I really like and so far I am soooooooooo disappointed with this book...if it wasn't in our book club I would be tempted to quit it, which I never do, so I'll keep going......I guess.

Well, I don't have a particular problem with the end of the world scenario, not that I like it to end or anything, but it's a concept I often run into.What I don't like so far, (and really hope that it will change in the next few chapters) is that this book is all blah, blah, blah without a point and poorly written as far as I'm concerned. I guess I will have to wait and see.... I don't want skipping books police come and get me :p

Book does get cheesy sometimes but other then that I feel it's quite okay read.. I had my own issues with first chapter when all 'soul implant' things were new.. but after that a good fictional read..

I have not read this book. However, I do have something to say about adding a new book to a previous stand alone book. I don't like it. I feel as though writers today are only making series to make more money. They are not making the series because they genuinely feel as though they NEED that many books. For instance, there is no way you could cram Game of Thrones into one book. It would be so freaking impossible. However, The Fault in Our Stars should only be one book. THose were done right but then you have book series such as hush hush, house of night, vampire academy(I love this series btw), and Anita Blake that do not need to be a series or have too many books in the series. They could have finished the store in a one or two books. They did not need 3-7(20 something and counting for Anita) books to tell the story. If the book ended well on its own then why would you want another book?

I guess, she's got good Agent :p and she saw her fair share of failures (with agents and publishing houses i mean..) so in a way, She (along with thousands of others) deserves it!

money and power corrupt, I think books & life have taught us all of that
I mean, in a way, I can blame her. People who love writing don't write for money. They do it because it is what they love. For instance, John Green had a chance to allow Looking for Alaska to become a movie. He would have made a nice pretty penny off of that, but he refused because they wanted to change what he felt was essential to the story. It would have been so easy for him to say "YES PLEASE MAKE ME MILLIONS!"(do you know how many nerdfighers would have flocked to the theater?) However, he didn't. I respect him so much for that. *ENDS RANT FOR LIKE EVER* I hope everyone is enjoying The Host! I think I am about to read Storm of Swords! AHHH!

GRRM's Storm of Swords? I loved the whole series!
What do you guys think about Cassandra Clare? I think she was tempted to extend the supposedly Mortal Instruments "Trilogy" to keep money coming in as soon as she got am overwhelming sales of the 3 books. She got city of fallen angels and lost souls. But honestly, I was turned off with the book extensions.
After the success of certain series, other writers felt inclined to prolong theirs but for no reason at all!! But let's get serious! It's not only their fault but ours too and by ours I mean the readers who nurture these prolongations. For example ''City of Lost Souls '' that was published May 2012 has already got 57.000 readers and those are the ones who are only signed up in here, I guess that the numbers increase a lot more.. *I plan to read that one too, so I don't excerpt myself :p

Of course there are!! I can't imagine ''The lord of the rings, Harry Potter or A game of thrones'' for example in one book!!!
There are series that need to be series. My point is that we have gone CRAZY with series in the YA genre. I mean in middle grades, of course. Kids like reading series and visiting familar characters. It makes sense in middle grades. Most of the time it doesn't in YA. I also agree with AnaΣtaΣia, it is partially our (the readers) fault. We continue to buy it knowing that it is going to subpar and not really needed. But, at last, what are you to do?
@Marian I have not read the othe rbooks in the series but I can not fathom why there would need to be more then three books in the series based on my very small sampling of book one. She has has the prequels, so how much more story can you jam in there? Who am I to judge though. It is just one of my book pet peeves, like dog earing (YUCK!!!!!).

I feel that this growing practice has degraded the true meaning of reading, and violated the sacred trust between reader and author by making this industry all about SELLING more novels, not turning out quality and concise fiction.
I stopped reading series which has more than 3 book series.I agree with Anaztasia. Books with many, diverse & complex characters justify the number of its series. Though I havent read HP and LoTR, with GoT they all have more to offer to the readers. I don' t get to feel it was prolonged. They gave justice to each penny we spent.
OK guys, two stars was the best I could do for this book!! I found it boring and unfounded! The Twilight series (even if its not of my best in this genre) was far better in my point of view. I think she tried to generate a book just to catch upon her success, so in my opinion it was a poorly written experiment.

I have only read The Hobbit from LOTR but would love to read the rest of the series. So we can be a rarity together! hehe
@ AnaΣtaΣia I wish you would have liked it better! I always hate it when I read a book and I don't like it. It was not a book I have ever thought of reading tbh.

It's gotten to the point with me that I won't even read a series because I know that it will at some point start sucking and they will just keep pumping out books for money without any care about quality. In fact I'm always on the look out for good stand alone books. The only time a series can remain fresh IMO is when each book is its own characters with a different plot line each time. Like the Immortal After Dark Series. Even Holly Black my favorite author really let me down with her third book in the Curse Workers Series "Black Heart" so after that I decided to be done with series forever.

I haven’t really commented because I just recently joined, but I really abhor books made into movie series. At some point I just don’t follow the movie series. I probably saw two Harry Potter movies, no Twilight movies, and 0, yes - Zero of The Host. The book could have a sequel - or not. It’s really up to the author, whom it seems, after writing a series like Twilight probably wrote open-ended-ly enough to leave room for a series. Meyer needs permission to end a book without a series and say - no, folks, this one is a one-timer. As it should be, because it’s not the best writing. There is a lot of filler with the wording between real scene that is like place-holder for movie action.

Like the Harry potter series or the Game of Thrones series or the Walking dead series.. All these have best cast selection ever... so for me, movies are extension to the books not representation of book.. :)
I agree with Soul..I feel that books and films are two different things and I'm almost always curious to watch a film or a series of a book I have read, especially if I liked the book. I admit that most of the times the book is far better but I've seen some films that surpass the book.
