new_user I saw Passengers with Patrick Wilson (because of Patrick Wilson), LOL. I have to say it was good until the end. Then it was just sad and depressing. What a downer, LOL. Do not see if you need an HEA. I thought it was going to be more thriller-ish.

PT (spinsterpt) | 319 comments Johnny Cash's "America IV: The Man Comes Around" is one of the most depressing albums ever. I think it's because he recorded it after June had died. It's really sad.

I am not a big fan of Elvis, but I do like Johnny Cash. I went to see "Ring of Fire" when it was on national tour.

I thought it was a bit of a bummer that she didn't really have much characterization besides running after him every time he had a crisis. When she coerced him to let her serve on the same ship it seemed a bit weird, too. I guess it would've been nice to have some back story to explain it so it didn't seem too flimsy and convenient only when the story called for it.

message 163: by Justine (new)

Justine | 1361 comments i agree with you rae. while i did like the interaction, it was a bit stilted and not quite real. in our day such coercion borders on the verge of sexual harrasment. i mean he changed the decision just like that!!!!????

and he's technically her superior. surely that's a no no. well perhaps such things are no longer a problem in star date 22 whatever :-)

and that's why i'm hoping that they develop the relationship. it would be nice to see them go back in time and show how they met etc.

message 164: by new_user (last edited May 24, 2009 01:18PM) (new)

new_user Well, the abrupt shift in their relationship from favorite student and teacher to romantically involved was kind of sudden, but it probably would have just made the movie longer if they showed the makings, her making eyes at him, special moments in class, etc. LOL. She did have a pretty limited role, but they all did. They all just play their respective personalities, LOL. Except for Kirk and Spock. The rest of the cast is just for fun, I think.

Oh! Good point, Justine. That's another thing too that was like "ack!". Wonder if it will continue in the series?

That's a good point too about the time because in this timeline/universe it's still closely resembles our current time.

Would be interesting to see where they go from here. They have to completely remold Spock's character because one of his struggles was that of balancing his human side, logic and honoring his Vulcan heritage and the culture. Now that he's freely sucking face in public and is instinct they'll have to figure out how to make him more nuanced lol.

I think they could have shown a progression in the relationship even with what they have onscreen. With just a few lines or a scene or two without bogging down the main storyline. Instead of focusing on clown hands and wacky medical hijinks they could have focused more on character development here and there. But I digress.

Since it was an alternate universe they had to basically rewrite the characters but they kind of copped out and just let the audience rely on previous knowledge of the characters (which is weird because when someone references previous acts the characters did, they're reminded it's a completely new world). Yikes! Plus it would have laid the groundwork for future stories.

I think in trying to reboot to ignore and dodge canon they made it more confusing! Lol.

new_user Rae wrote: "Instead of focusing on clown hands and wacky medical hijinks they could have focused more on character development here and there. But I digress."

True, but that stuff was hilarious, LOL. I wouldn't have missed it for them making eyes at each other. But yeah, I guess they could have had a few subtle hints in there.

message 167: by Justine (new)

Justine | 1361 comments hopefully they can make it a more ensemble sort of series. instead of the captain kirk eternal superhero. i got tired of that rather quickly. i know we american like our heros... but come on.

i do like the new version of spock. they've made him a bit more human, a bit more approachable. so let's keep fingers crossed... eh splayed open.

CaliGirlRae (rae_l) | 2017 comments Mod
Lol Captain Kirk eternal superhero. King of hanging off ledges? hehe

That's true. I guess that's why I thought he was kind of boring and one note to me. I liked that he previously had a culture and Vulcans are my favorite Trek species because of the vast history they share that makes them so different in contrast to their Romulan brothers. Here he just seemed like an uppity elitist rather than a man with more layers and varied background. Oh well.

I'm hoping Paramount doesn't desert the Prime Universe altogether for the alternate one. That universe is so vast and there's so much more stories to be told that it would be great if they continued both timelines. I guess there's always books and fan productions (which are actually quite fun)!

message 169: by new_user (new)

new_user I didn't really see any spoilers, mostly discussion on characters. Most of it probably won't make sense if you haven't seen the movie, LOL.

We never saw a young Kirk or Spock in the Prime Universe. But I have to say that I like this young Spock.

Think of the fun they can have in this new universe. Can you imagine retelling all the old stories with different endings? IF they do do this - I'm holding out for some sort of green gooey blob to eat Number 1 before he gets to be Number 1. I could not stand that Will Riker character

PT (spinsterpt) | 319 comments Oh, I just had to chime in that the india.arie concert was FABULOUS. She had Laura Izibor as her opening act and she was quite good. She's kind of like an Irish Alicia Keys. She made a little joke about Black Americans not realizing that there are black people in Ireland. I must admit that I didn't think that there many, if any.
Anywho, back to india.arie. She was amazing. I would see her again in a heartbeat. I love the new songs on Vol. 2 plus she sang three of my absolute favs by her: "Heart of the Matter," "There's Hope," and "I am not my Hair."

I quite like Nichelle. I think a lot of Uhura was based on what Nichelle brought to it and she's so graceful and strong without going over the top. Even now in her roles she's very strong but has a way of doing it with style.

Zoe is a very modern actress. Even in her other roles like Haven, Crossroads, Vantage Point and Drumline she isn't a very strong actress that brings the full on moxie. She did well in those because they called for a certain kind of suffering, youthful naivete and innocence lost but as Uhura, I think she needed to bring it up a notch to fit within what Nichelle has created for the character. I'm definitely interested to see how she plays her role in the upcoming Avatar because she has the potential to make that role stand out since her character will be somewhat innocent but a fighter in the end.

That's true. There were a ton stories written and coming to the screen (including a Harve Bennett script which this movie took a lot of cues from) but none of them ever made it until now.

If they do an alternate universe take I would hope that they do completely new series. The complaints they had included "the canon was so vast it hampered out creativity so we couldn't write. So then we decided to just chuck canon and wipe out the past and future in an alternate universe". Groovy, so why go back and remake previous stories with new endings? I see a lot of parallels from what happened with BSG potentially happening here. Learn from the past folks! lol.

Lol you didn't like Riker? I have to admit I'm not too big of a TNG fan (runs away from the oncoming tomato storm). There was too much walking and talking and sit around talking about the problem before doing something for my liking. Picard was a big fan of diplomacy and chatting about. I liked The Original Series because Kirk went out there and DID something and had adventures.

DS9 was cool (my second favorite series) but I didn't like how Sisko was the ONLY Captain to start out the show as a Commander. Suspect huh? Plus he wasn't in every episode which tended to showcase the other characters (Nerys, Odo, etc) more than him. Later on it got really awesome when they showed more of him. Favorite eps are Trials and Tribulations and Far Beyond the Stars. The latter episode was a really bold move for a tv show (not surprising for Trek maybe?) because of how much they showed as far as racism in the 50s. If you haven't seen it, definitely check it out. Actually check both out if you can! :-)

Here's a youtube video someone made of the ep: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSUroR...

I have to admit I didn't know there were that many black in Ireland myself until I heard about Samantha Mumba and her brother. I saw them in the remake of the Time Machine (which wasn't too bad). Come to think of it I haven't heard much of her since then. Hmmm.

PT (spinsterpt) | 319 comments Here's my funny Star Trek story.
Somewhere in time, I became completely convinced that Wil Wheaton was dead. Somehow, I thought he went in the way of my teenage crush: River Phoenix, who I loved in "Dogfight."
But, I digress. Anywho, I was sure he was dead. I would actually tell it to people, who usually either thought I was psycho or were completely shocked.
Anyway, I once told this to my good friend Angela and she looks at me and says, "No, he isn't numnuts."
I persisted in my delusion that he was dead and re-affirmed that he was, in fact, dead.
To which she replied, "He wasn't dead last month when I saw him."
It turns out that she and her husband are casual acquaintances of his and he is NOT dead.
I have begged her not to relay this story to him.

Wow, Rae. You have something to say about Star Trek. I'm impressed.

I liked TNG because of Picard, Data, and Worf. I also liked when Whoopi Goldberg was on there. I found Riker and Deana Troi boring (sorry to any fans). But TNG is my favorite. DS9 was a bit dry but I liked it. Voyager would have been better except I didn't like Janeway. Sorry but Enterprise put me to sleep. I was so disappointed with it. I'd like to watch more of the original Star Trek than I've gotten the opportunity to. I just ordered the animated Star Trek series off Amazon.
