Hello Friends, I'm looking for YA distopian appropriate for a 12 year old. She's blown through Hunger Games and Veronica Roth at the rate of a $10 ebook every three days and we'd love to get into some indie/self published works from the group. She's on pace to read every book ever written by the time she can drive =)

Sulan, Episode 1: The League is a good YA dystopian read. Are you just looking for dystopian stuff or are other kinds of YA acceptable too?

Check out The Prophecy as well. The first book in the series is free. I just read Cragbridge Hall, Book 1: The Inventor's Secret and thought it was pretty good as well. From a Far Land is another fantasy option that works for YA and though the main character is male there is a very important female role as well.

I'm pretty terrible at remembering how books are classified so I'm sure I could come up with a couple dozen more given a bit of time lol. I'll check through my lists sometime soon and see what jumps out at me. I try to keep some stuff separate for reading to my daughter when she gets older.

Sounds good and thank you. I've read Jeffrey's book The Prophecy. It's on my Kindle and I've put it on my Sony for her. What I liked best about it was the great 'buddy' feel between Steve and Sarah. I love them together and stress out when they're apart.

I already have From a Far Land on my Kindle as well, just haven't gotten to it yet. The one she wants most is Cragbridge Hall, Book 1: The Inventor's Secret which isn't out yet =)

I forgot that hadn't come out yet. I got an ARC from the publisher earlier this month. It was a really good book and it also has a strong female lead character.

If she likes Fantasy you could try the Narnia books, or the Hobbit or The Dreamweaver's Journey

If I can blow my own horn, when we wrote our fantasy Duck Blood Soup we tried to have strong female characters. We have women in combat, women as heads of state, female wizards, and a woman leading a nation's army.

There is some violence - when a giant steps on someone, there's going to be a mess. No sex, so it is appropriate for her age group.

The Dragon Box I really liked, very cleverly done. Not sure of the age group but def a kids book although a darn good read for an adult as well:)

You also might try out Elle Casey's works. I've read and really enjoyed her Apocalypsis series that starts with Kahayatle.

Scott, she tore through Sulan, Episode 1: The League, then Nine-Tail Fox: A Chinese Heritage Tale, Raggedy Chan, and Warming Demon and then she demanded I contact the author and ask for more! Camille Picott said this summer!

I'd love her to give my book a try-it's fantasy, femail heroine, similar to hunger games in that it's about the character and her struggles rather than the focus being the world she's in. There's violence but nothing as gruesome as the hungergames! A rape is alluded to but nothing is described, and there is light romantic tension between a couple of characters but no sex or even almost sex. The book is 'Kergulen' on amazon.And I made up my own curse words to keep that end of things kosher.

Elizabeth, did you get the Sulan 0.5 novella? I can't remember what it's called off the top of my head but it's on Amazon. I'm looking forward to the next book in the Sulan stuff as well.

Just FYI The Inventor's Secret is available now if she is still interested in that.
