Did I miss something? Is this thread about music or books...or both? Seems to lean more toward audio books. Ooops!
I thought it was about what you're listening to while you're reading or writing. Silly me. :)

Whew! That's a relief. Thought I made a major newbie gaff.
Never tried audio books. No, that's not true, really. I have a CD collection of Edgar Allen Poe stories read by Vincent Price and Basil Rathbone which I really love.

That sounds wonderful! Vincent Price had a beautiful voice.

His are the best on the CD. I love his readings of Ligeia and Morella. Truly haunting. He was such a great actor. I purchased the CD collection years ago, so I don't know if the website/company is still active, but this the link they show on the cover: www.harperaudio.com. The CD is called The Edgar Allan Poe Audio Collection. Basil Rathbone is excellent in his reading of The Cask of Amontillado,The Masque of the Red Death and The Black Cat.

I made a dumb mistake the other day and bought a cd I already owned by mistake. I didn't realize it until I'd gotten home and ripped the packaging off. I do love Josh Groban when writing a particularly romantic scene, but not enough to need two copies of one cd! Guess one of my friends will be the lucky recipient of the new copy!
But, yes, I've been listening to Josh Groban for a good chunk of the week.
I've also decided to ask for audible gift cards for my bday. I need more audio books. I know, I never thought I'd hear myself say that! Lol, but I would love to listen to Adrien and Jake on audio. Someday this will happen.

I do that with books :) Goes to show we have more things than we can keep track of. On the other hand, books and music aren't things, they are emotions and experience and love, right? You can't have too much of that!

It's whatever you're listening to. So either works.

Calathea wrote: "I finished listening to Strange Fortune today. It's even better in audio. Somehow this kind of adventure story lends itself very good to be narrated. Very much like cinema in my head. :)"
Josh wrote: "I liked the classic narration style for this one -- to me the story has that kind of feel. And I loved Lazarus's voice for Strange."
I've been listening to Strange Fortune for two days now while doing stuff in the garden and I'm liking it a lot. Like Josh said the narrator's voice and style are perfect for a story like this one. His narration really does justice to the richness of the writing — makes the listening experience very cinema-like (just like Calathea said). And I especially like his intonation!

I have to say I was startled when I saw the price for it on Amazon. GULP. It's ten plus hours, so I guess that's the explanation, but holy guacamole. I guess that'll teach me to bitch about undercutting audio book prices, eh?
That is one you definitely want to use your audible credits on.

Hmm, I have to say I didn't even check the price when I bought it. (That probably says something about the speed I purchased it...).

I listened over and over until the tape started goooooinnng reealllyy slooowww and eventually broke. At least we don't have that problem now!
I wonder if The Time Machine is available from Audible. For nostalgia's sake.

Yes it is available. SEVERAL versions!
http://www.audible.com/search/ref=hp_...

That price is fairly in line with other romances I've bought, so I wasn't surprised by it. Of course I had stashed credits. Those who are members of Audible have many opportunities to buy the book at a bit of a discount, so it's not going to scare people off, I don't think.

Ha! I used to subscribe to Books on Tape. In fact, when they were clearing out their inventory, I bought a ton of tapes that are still sitting here untouched all these years later.
I'm beginning to think I really do have hoarder tendencies.
Maybe not tendencies.

My father gave me a set of records ( yeah, you know those round black things with a hole in the middle) of recordings of The Shadow from the original radio broadcasts. They were fantastic! Lost them somehow over the years and have not been able to replace them. I can still hear Lamont Cranston's "heh, heh, heh, heh...."
Records!!! I managed to buy The Red Balloon story that we listened to on record in elementary school. But the pace is almost too fast to catch all the words so I haven't listened to that record in years.
Ya'll know I've got a thing for cassettes while my tape player is still good. All of my audio, minus my recent CUTYS purchase is on cassette. But that works for me for falling asleep. The tape will eventually stop before the end of the book so I have some idea where I left off, should that matter, and I won't wake up listening to the end of the book in the morning. That would be weird, I think. Lol.

I have done that! I have fallen asleep and woken up several chapters later, LOL. I blame it on being read to sleep by my grandparents.

Me too. Any time I read on the sofa after 10PM. I recently sat down with a great book around 10:45 PM. I belive I was on page 35 when I started. I do not remember falling asleep, but when I woke up at 4:40 AM, I looked at my Nook and saw that I was on page 125. WTF? What happened???

The Shadow, volume 1 is available at Audible.com and only $3.95! For that price I think I will try it myself :) They also have more then 100 separate stories with different narrators, for less than a dollar each, wow.

Making a three-hour drive north this afternoon with a daughter and two of her friends to Taos for the Mumford and Sons concert! Guess I'll be listening and watching. :-)

I think it was you and Karen who I can thank for mentioning the Mumford and Sons on some thread (maybe one of the Playlist topics?). Anyway, I have them on my "starred" Spotify playlist now. This GR group has not only made wonders to my to-read list, but I has also expanded my music lists. I have found so many new-to-me bands and songs here. The kind that have become my favorites too.
Sometimes I wish I could take you guys to an art exhibition to talk about the artwork and visual arts with you. I bet it would be as intriguing as it's to discuss books and music and movies with you all. :-)

Hey, you math geeks are great. :-) I've never been very good in math and I truly admire people who are. Sadly, I began to found mathematics fascinating only when I was a bit older and not in school anymore. So it was kind of too late for me to "prepare all the damage" I had already caused to my math skills by being so damn lazy with it in the high school...

Oh I love M & Sons! That's really great that you're going with your daughter. My mom wouldn't have done that when I was a kid. Our music tastes can be very different. Lol.
Juthi wrote: "If you guys like Mumford & Sons, you should check out The Lumineers, Beirut and Bon Iver. They have a similar alt/folk sound."
Thank you for the recommendations, Juthi! I'm definitely going to check those out this weekend! :-)

The concert was amazing, better than I could have imagined! Lawn seating, but even though we were way back in line (8,000+ people) we managed to find very good, fairly close views on the far left. Loved it. It was a special night.
Jordan, my daughter is 23, and her SO did the driving. In the past I took both daughters (other is 26) and their friends on Warped Tour road trips, when they were in their teens, but now I get to go along as a passenger. ;-) My daughter introduced me to Mumford a few years back, and gave me their latest CD as a birthday gift.
My musical taste is eclectic. I also love Baroque. My older daughter's favorite music was punk. She was even a punk rock DJ at her college. I did about 7 or 8 Warped Tours with her and her friends. It was always a hot, loud, day-long event and I would lug and load all of their collected band bootie, but I was able to hear some great bands.

The in-person art and music discussions sound great, too. Maybe those of you in Manchester can give that idea a kick-off? :-)
We visited Manchester once about 30 years ago, stayed with a couple we met while they were bringing an exhibit of Manchester sculptors to the States — actually to the artists' space in NM where I was a director. It was some kind of amazing government grant (his government, not ours), especially because most of these were large works. His was a huge rusted iron piece meant to evoke beach defenses during WWII.

Do you notice how all sorts of interesting information comes out in out thread? Great!
Karen, that all sounds absolutely amazing! And it's nice that you still get to do fun stuff even now that they're grown up. :-)

It is fun to do stuff with your adult children, isn't it?
Just bought Fatal Shadows this morning! When I woke up dead at 5am with a long train ride ahead of me, even though I was carrying 9 print books and a kindle, an audio book was necessary. So far I like it, but it's going to take some getting used to when it comes to D. Chan's voice, I think.

I listened to Strange Fortune yesterday and stayed up late to finish. So nicely done! It had been awhile since I read the book the first time. Josh does such a fine job with fantasy.

That book has the best spaceship chase scene EVER! :) I love Honor Harrington.

Me too, especially early Honor. She got a little Mary Sue-ish in later books.

This made me laugh! and think of the amazing car chase at the end of The Blues Brothers.

LOL it kind of is. Her spaceship just about breaks apart around her. Just like their car.
And I'm in Chicago right now, so a very timely analogy. :)
Thank you, Juthi, for the new-to-me song! It sounded like summer. :-)
Hmm... my summer songs. I'm not sure about those, but I have a song I'll start humming when I feel relaxed and truly happy. It's something I do quite unconsciously and it often surprises me, too. Like: "Huh. I'm so happy? Cool." :-)
Anyway (and please don't laugh), my feel-good song is Santa Lucia. ;-) Here is Elvis' version of it. The strange thing is I never listen to it. Only on Santa Lucia's Day (13th of December) when we usually have the Scandinavian traditional Santa Lucia celebrations in school. It's a midwinter celebration and Santa Lucia brings light to it with her. So, that's a thought full of hope, right? Maybe that's the reason for it being my feel-good song. Light and hope. ;-)
