What we're listening to

I have the first two on audio but have not listened yet. I may do them all in a group later on.

I've only listened to the sample but wow, that accent is all over the place! The narrator is a "Canadian-born New Zealand actor". He doesn't sound Australian. Why is it impossible for the publishers to employ a true Aussie to voice books which are so completely Australian? I love this series but can't listen to these narrators.

I thought about buying that one last year, but the samples did not really convince me. Well, maybe I listened to much to the Boswell sisters...
But I love this one - don't be irritated by a short Czech passage, it is just a joke about dubbing ;-)

Ah, that explains why I couldn't place it, but I like him much better than the other dude

I had the same problem with WMP, it works with Itunes.
Out of the Blue is now available on audio -- and it's already on sale! ;-)

Yep, we worked it out on her GR group. There is a new file to download if you need it! And it works!

It's got to be a glitch.

Sweet! I have that $10 coupon to spend...
Though sample heavily. Some of those narrators are better than others.

I confess this one isn't one of my favourite of Josh's stories. But sometimes I appreciate a book better the second time around. So we'll see.

This book is not working for me. Sean's accent is just overwhelming and all I can hear is the sound and not the story. I just can't. The pronounciation is just... I don't know... not to my liking at all and I've tried few times to start over and try to get into the story but I always get lost because all I hear is the sound and not the story.
I'm kind of disasppointed because I'd been wanting to read this story for a long time and thought I was buying something golden and then it just doesn't work for me. Maybe because I'm not Britist... I don't know.

You are not the only one, I'm afraid. :-( It was discussed here a while ago and there were a lot of people disappointed with the narration (look at message 3172ff, it's a few pages back).

If it's any comfort, I DNFfed the ebook...
At least Audible gives a refund if you don't like a book

I enjoyed listening to this one. I thought the narrator did an excellent job with accents and timing. The mood is so melancholy, and it definitely isn't what I'd term a 'happy' story. For some reason these little snippets into wartime sit with me for quite awhile after reading.
The same happened to me after reading Skybound by Aleksandr Voinov. Just makes me wish war wasn't necessary or a part of our history, but without it, I can't imagine a world dominated by the Third Reich....*sigh* or similar dictatorships... I feel fortunate for my fought for freedoms.

Yes, I bought the three Fireman books of Andrew's and I can't even get a quarter of the way through the first one. Wonder if it's too late for a refund :(

You have a year, after that no refunds

I'm all for British accents, they're sexy :-)
Welsh is my favourite, followed by Scottish
Cockney is too weird though, not so much the accent but the slang :p

The pronunciation of that book is just BAD. They really needed to get a British actor good with accents to narrate that book. It even makes the author shudder to listen to it.

I was raised on PBS British comedy, so I know the various regional British accents. I even know a Glaswegian accent from a highlander accent... but I have a good ear for these things, and I've heard them first hand when I was in Scotland many years ago.

I've got a Geordie accent. I'll do it. ;-)
The Geordie accent is a tough one. Not even many actors can pull it off without sounding fake. You need a real Geordie! :D

I loved the book but couldn't listen to the audio book. Luckily I had tried the sample. Back then I didn't know the narrator.
I totally get what you're saying, Ame.
This American couldn't stand that accent for Life After Joe. I did get through the book, and I enjoyed the book as much as I could. But the audio was horrible. I couldn't understand much of what he was saying!

A YEAR? Good Lord.
A YEAR? Good Lord.
The accent thing! My brother-in-law and I were just recently discussing American accents in British mystery productions. All the "Americans" use a really odd, unique accent -- flat, nasal, without any nuance -- and you only find it in British actors of a certain period imitating Americans. Regionally...it doesn't exist. It's like a cross between Texas and New York. It's just...peculiar. You hear it in the early Poirots, Marples, Midsommers. But in the last couple of years, it's started to change and the American accents are a little better.
I think maybe there are even occasionally Americans playing Americans, which might be part of the improvement?
But then accents are hard. ACTING is hard. I've watched (listened) to English actors who can't do Irish or Scottish accents to save their lives. As bad as anything I've heard in an American film. Sometimes worse.
I think it really does ultimately come down to the individual talent of the individual actor/narrator.

They definitely have a great CUSTOMER service, you even get to keep the book on whatever devices you've downloaded it to, it's only removed from the library.

I can see that's a nice thing from a customer standpoint.

It's bizzare, especially when one knows a bit about how they treat you guys...

If I thought it was a genuine philosophical belief about customer service, I guess I'd have to respect these decisions. But knowing they are only based on wiping out competition -- and are thus temporary strategies -- well, ouch. ;-)

I cannot do it at all. I can pronounce foreign words properly, since I have a good ear for languages, but I can't do an accent.

Really?

I used to be really good at accents, I could even do Donald Ducks :p
But I have recently discovered that this takes practice ;-)

Thanks for the heads up! I was able to return all three of those short stories...only about a $10 credit, but I know I won't listen. Tried like 5 times to go back to the first one and just had to dnf. And actually, there us nothing on the site that I could find. I just opened a chat window, and the CS rep was very nice about it.

There are about 13 of the Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte series on audiobook. I'm already hooked and have only listened about 10 minutes on the way home from lunch.
