Between his bullying father and dissolute brother, Percival Endicott Whyborne has quite enough problematic family members to deal with. So when his sister returns to Widdershins asking for help solving the mystery of a derelict ship, Whyborne is reluctant to get involved. Until, that is, a brutal murderer strikes, leaving Whyborne and his lover Griffin no choice but to take the case.

The investigation leads them deep into a conspiracy of blackmail, murder, and darkest sorcery. But worst of all are the secrets held within the family itself, one of which will destroy everything Whyborne believed to be true, not only about his family, but about himself.

Bloodline is the fifth book in the Whyborne & Griffin series, where magic, mystery, and m/m romance collide with Victorian era America.

The story/mystery: my favourite in this series so far. Ketos are interesting;

Whyborne and Griffin have grown as characters and their relationship is hot and balanced.

I wanted to slap Whyborne so much in this book, my hands were itching to land on his beautiful face. Good thing he is adorable. The best thing about this series is, it is not predictable, i get excited when my theories are debunked.

Thank you my buddy readers for another amazing ride.

Ahhhh. /sigh Lots of plotlines coming together here. Whyborne really developing as a character in interesting ways, all sorts of major changes going down and a very creepy plotline. Love the British cousins. This is a very fun series indeed and I'm delighted to see there'll be a 6.

Disclaimer: I've written a story with Jordan and all, so I'm biased, if it's biased to really enjoy someone who writes with such skill and confidence, and plots series like a flipping maestro.

Umm, does anyone else have a feeling that the author is a fan of Legends of the Fall

Going by the number of bereavements here I had a déjà vu of me sitting in the theatre watching the downfall of the Ludlows... Granted, with a touch of magic, grisliness and sea monsters, mind you. ;-)
Hähle-fackeln

I have to admit that I was not a fan of the course of events here and the story itself would probably get 3 stars from me. The rest, though??????

Whyborne was his usual naive and sometimes highly obtuse self and even if I alternated between wanting to smack him upside the head at times and attack-hug him when he was as endearing as ever, I have to say that Griffin will always be my hero. Period.

But let's talk about what gets all the stars in the universe from me... Granted, it's a very short conversation because I will just say one word: THAT. ENDING! Okay, that's two words, but I'm always one for doing my best at proper grammar. ;-) I have to go anyway because I'm still trying to wipe all that goo off of me... ;-)

Whooo this book was a TREAT! I think it's the BEST of the series yet.

Ok, let me back up. If you haven't started the Whyborne & Griffin series yet (book 1 is Widdershins ), firstly, *stank eye* *judgement* *disappointment* and then secondly, DO IT! You must! I held off for so long and then was so bummed that I'd waited. This entire series is fun and scary and romantic and zany and sweet and a GREAT RIDE. Each book has it's own flavor but is so consistently "Whyborne & Griffin".

Now, if you have read the series, I'll go back to my first line of this review...I think Bloodline is the BEST yet. It's just...more...of everything we've come to love from this series. It's all the characters at their best. It's more emotional than the others. It's more mystical than the others (waaaayyyy more...but we'll get to that). It's more ambitious than the others. It's BRAVER in the writing and where the story goes than the others. I thoroughly enjoyed it. And better yet, I savored it.

Bloodline is all about Percival Endicott Whyborne (my bae!) and dealing with some crazy-ass shit going down with his family. I mean, his family has always been nuts. But this is nuts x1000. At first it's your typical "my family is sadistic and doesn't love me and oh yeah calls on demons to rule the world" story. Then it gradually grows into something, if you can believe, darker and scarier and almost Game-of-Thrones'ish as far as family stories go.

The author takes it to a place that, well, once ocean people with shark teeth and tentacles are introduced, felt slightly over-the-top and I thought "Well, here we go. Way to ruin a good story!" But do you know what she did then? She took it FURTHER over the top...so far that suddenly I was surfing the biggest wave and loving the ride! I went with it and became so engaged in the outcome of the story, I had forgotten my previous concerns. Oh to trust the author...! Now, I have NO idea where she can possibly go from here...there's really no going back. Can't wait to find out.

Now, it wasn't all crazy non-humans and power-hungry cousins trying to sleep with you (<-oh, did I neglect to mention that?).

What was also "more" about this story was the emotional pull. MAN...I cried a couple times, I yelled at Whyborne (my bae!) a couple times, I worried for Whyborne and Griffin a couple times, I gawwww'd at their love a couple times, I high-fived Christine when she was angry at Whyborne (my bae!) a couple times...it was just full of feelz and had me more emosh than I'd ever been throughout this series. I was surprised, honestly. And I loved it.

I loved it so much, I missed them when I was done.

So, Ms. Hawk...how quickly can you get us book 6? Asking...for a friend.

Like any self-respecting fan that has reached book #5, by now Whyborne's dislike for most of his family members is a universally acknowledged truth. His unrelenting father wants him to finally settle down in a very visibly heterosexual way, and relegate his more exotic inclinations into the side piece category. His evil brother on the other hand, is just plain miffed that his former boxing bag has had the audacity to grow a backbone.

But more surprisingly, his long estranged sister... seems to have developed a sudden and surprising interest in his sorcery? Can't a man just skirt his way around the edges of his own birthday party in peace?!

Hiding

Story and revelation-wise, this book was awesome! We find out more about Whyborne's maternal ancestors (the Endincotts), get to see our hero win some new friends (which he also ends up losing pretty fast), and last but not least, delve we get to some more into Widdershin's history and lore.

Reactions

If you've been a fan of those fantasy action/packed manga, like say Dragon Ball, imagine cramming every single one of Son Goku's power-ups, along with his Saiyan backstory, into a single ARC. It would certainly be awesome, but you'd also feel like asking the author to slow down and leave some stuff for the next installment.

Score: 3.3/5 stars

Another action-packed book, peppered with some well-placed sexy times, but mostly focusing on the mind-blowing aspect of things. I can't help but wonder: what else is left to explore?

Book #5

I finished this adventurous —and very fun and enjoying (fourth W&G) buddyread with Sofia and Bev— a couple of days ago.

Still happy-dancing!!

3 besties: Whyborne, Griffin & Christine (..yep, in trousers)

As so often I'd a plan to write a great tribute review (in my humble 'yay-hurray-yay' way...) to another fantastic installment to this series. This fifth book, and this great series, is really worth a grand and well-written tribute review. Not from me this time either, but I'm sure someone will write one.

***********************************************************

Book #5 Bloodline is the fifth part in the very adventurous, and often spooky scary, historical Whyborne & Griffin series by Jordan L. Hawk.
‘Bad enough to die from reading an gorgeously written book, but what if it turned out to be rubbish? Being killed by bad prose would only add insult to injury.’

Our main character in these books:

The former Pinkerton Detective, Mr Griffin Flaherty, is still a quite newcomer (two years ago) in this small, a bit strange, town Widdershins. A very experienced gentleman, with thick skin and a dramatic, slightly dark past history from the big city. Griffin's lover, is a lovely tall slender younger man, Dr Percival Endicott Whyborne (aka Ival). A former shy (virgin) man with fine ancestry from a wealthy railway family.

Most often we also meet their good friend, Dr. Christine Putnam. A brave woman and a higly admired archaeologist and specialist in the ancient Egyptian pharaohs cultures.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

More about our MC's, events before this fifth part:

***********************************************************

This fifth time (fall 1899) we meet both strange sea-spieces and Whyborne's unknown cheeky and fun-loving twin cousins from England. All of them with magical abilities or powerful strenghts. There was also a terribly cruel murder within the W family (main 'crime' plot) and another thousand quirky, adventurous and terrifying events. Puh!!

Speaking of the snobbish Whyborne family:
“(...). Thank you, er, Griffin.”
I bristled slightly—Griffin certainly hadn't given Father permission to use his name. But Griffin only nodded back. “Think nothing of it, Niles.”
Touché.’

I think you need to be in a warmhearted open-mind kind of mood before you tackle Whyborne and Griffin's wild adventures (..and wild nights). Make sure to be in really good reading shape.

***********************************************************

Their love is magic - one of the hottest M/M couple...
Every now and then you also get to experience some of the most well-crafted hot steamy scenes you can imagine. Amazing and so sincerely loving.

As my friend Sofia tend to point out: The beauty of these books is to have the privilege to follow these two men develop a wonderful ever-growing (charming and tender) relationship.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
‘But no amount of freedom was worth giving up Griffin.’

Wow, once again a great adventurous W&G book!!
A lot of odd and crazy things happened here but Whyborne and Griffin's love were just as amazing intense and hot as always. In my opinion best so far in this series.

There'll be a sixht book Hoarfrost.
(Publ. 2015 - according to Ms Hawk herself.)

I LIKE - my favorite hoooot HR-PNR-M/M lovebirds

This series definitely should be read from the beginning. (And definitely should be read by anyone who enjoys paranormal romance.) This is perhaps the most startling installment, as over and over the author caught me by surprise with where she took the plot and the backstory.

The romance between Whyborne and Griffin continues to be the warm, solid and sweet underpinning of the saga, and yet, just when I'd have thought there was nothing that could shake up this couple, there was that revelation... Jordan Hawk sets up situations that in a more cautious author's hands would have been teasers, conventionally resolved. But instead, more than once, she takes the unexpected route and leaves the reader blinking, and trying madly to rearrange expectations. It's well done, and gives fresh edge to the series even this far into the books.

I enjoyed this ride, and look forward eagerly to any further glimpses of these men that the author chooses to give us, including the next novel. Not a perfect book, but so surprising, imaginative, engaging and entertaining that it fully deserves five stars. And I do adore Griffin.
(Even if I still struggle with how he pronounces "Ival"...) These men are a great couple of MCs.

Wow...this was a surprising, emotional and heartbreaking read. Whyborne and his family take several heavy hits. Two creepy ass distant relatives come to town as well. Something about them I didn’t like immediately. Kind of reminded me of these two

Whyborne is coming into his own more and more. But at what cost? I wanted to strangle him at one point. I was so disappointed. But like every relationship there’s ups and downs. Thankfully he gets his head out of his ass. And oh man...swoon time at the end! I was dying and crying. Absolute perfection.

I'm still binge reading this series. I know I'm going to be sad when I get to the last book but I can't stop reading!

My very favorite thus far!!!!!!! If I were 13 I would be squealing, of course secretly because I wouldn’t want my parents to catch me reading such racy mysteries. This one was truly spectacular!

I loved this! Just when you thought thing were getting settled, there’s another twist in the plot that’s just as death defying (or not) as the one before. If you’re reading this, you’ve probably already read the previous books and have taken note of all the dropped clues and hints. Keep those in mind because this one has a MONSTROUS REVEAL-part of which I did not see coming.

So, off to read the next one as soon as I can!

”Listen up little fish, little fish,

Let’s make a wish, make a wish,

For a time not come but yet to be,

One for the land, and one for the sea."

Well. I’m a bit speechless after that if I’m honest.

So much happens it this book but I’m finding it a difficult one to review because revealing any of the main plot points would just cause massive spoilers and that would be mean and could possibly lead to people shouting at me.

So the things I can tell you! First of all, this one is my favourite. Does that sound familiar?

Secondly there was non-stop action. I was a little tired afterward. There was so much going on that poor Whyborne and Griffin didn’t even get to partake in that much of their usual ‘action’ together. And they do like their form of ‘action’. And let’s be honest I rather like it myself.

On occasion throughout this book I was absolutely furious with Whyborne. Now myself and Whyborne have had a few such run-ins throughout this series and I suppose it is fairly obvious by now that Griffin has kind of stolen my heart. One of the reasons for that is his Irish heritage, it’s a rule that we Irish have to automatically take our fellow Irishman’s side in all conflicts in books, on TV or in Movies. Even if they are the bad guy! True story.

But Griffin is also an absolute sweetheart. How he remains calm in almost every situation, the way he can charm anyone he meets and the way he loves Whyborne are just some of the reasons I adore him. The more I read of him the harder I fall. He has not been perfect, sometimes his views on Whybornes use of magic are harsh and a little unreasonable but I don’t think he ever means to be cruel about it. It has always been clear that his disapproval is because he worries for Whyborne. It was only a matter of time before things came to a head and that is exactly what happens.

”When you are certain your cause is just, it becomes easy to excuse almost anything to further it.”

I tried not to take sides, but I did. Me and Whyborne made up though, you know, after he stopped behaving like an utter child.

”My chest didn’t seem to be big enough to contain my heart, or my face to contain my smile.”

”I won’t give up on you.” He shook me gently. “Do you understand, Ival? I love you, and I will never give up on you.”

As usual Christine was completely kickass.

And she was also absolutely hilarious.

”I sat still amidst the rustle of papers and gathering of hats, feeling rather as if I’d been run over by one of Father’s trains. “But it’s my birthday,” I repeated.

“Sorry, old fellow,” Christine said, collecting her half of our notes. “So much for your Hollowe’en plans of bobbing for Griffin’s apples.”

I find myself wanting more and more of her. She is brash, hard headed and tough as nails but she is also a sweetheart and so kind to Whyborne and Griffin. I really want to be Christine.

This book was fantastic. All the characters, even the ones I hated, were fantastic. The plot was fantastic. I might not have been surprised by the way things went but getting there was just so much fun. I know I’ve said this in previous reviews for this series and I sound like a broken record but for me (probably not ANYONE else) these books feel like old school B-movies, whenever I think of any of the books my brain automatically conjures up old movie posters along the lines of this awesomeness:

I’m so sad that I’m finished ‘Bloodline’ and while reading it, it felt a bit like it was the final book. I actually panicked a few times and even went so far as to check the series numbers and Jordan L. Hawks author page. There was no sign of book 6. I was unhappy and I was scared. But not to worry. This greeted me at the end.

Now all that is left for me to do is torture Jordan on twitter for a release date. Simples!

Bloodline packed a major punch! I went through many complex and often duelling emotions during this fifth instalment of Hawk’s fantastically rich and engaging Whyborne & Griffin series.

My status updates can attest to my exasperated feelings towards Whyborne during the middle portion of this story, but I’ve decided to put my anger and irritation aside and think of his behaviour as necessary character development that ultimately furthered the story.

The twists and turns this story took were exciting to say the least. I was practically on the edge of my seat for the final 30% of the story, as scene after scene kept building in action and suspense, until the story reached its zenith.

Bloodline also felt a lot heavier than the previous stories, with many more emotional blows impacting dear Whyborne (and by extension Griffin and Christine) than one is used to in this often more fun, spooky and romantic series. It was still all of those things, but this time it just felt like the stakes were even higher than usual, making everything feel more epic.

Basically, this felt like the book Hawk was always working towards within this series. The revelations were complex and plentiful, adding impressive depth to the series as a whole and opening up avenues for potential (hopefully endless) stories set in this amazingly developed 19th century world, with these endlessly fabulous and lovable characters.

And that ending?! Pure bloody perfection!!

What a ride……

Hawk came out full guns ablazing and did not stop shooting until she wrote THE END. What a great instalment in this series which has become a staple for me.

The only thing that stopped me from curling up and reading this in one go, was that it was a buddy read with this series companions and I enjoy our reads too much, to tear on ahead without them.

Hawk weaves her story like an experienced spider, plots within plots, plots coming to conclusions, other plots opening up. And in all of this we have more Why and Griff whose relationship continues to grow and jump over the pitfalls.

What else, oh, feels, so many feels. One page I was yelling at Why,

then I turned the page I was suddenly feeling so bad for him, so so bad, so sad

then I turn the page again and he is being awesome, right on till the end which left me happy and feeling great. In a way I can say that this was more Why's book than Griff's but it would be untrue in a way, because as Why himself admits, for him there is no Why without Griff.

Wow, this story was full of things I didn't expect and it kept me on the edge of my seat for ages! I loved almost everything about the story. I was never fond of the cousins, though, and the more I got to know them the less I liked them, and I hated Whyborne lying to and keeping secrets from Griffin. But wow, what a story. And that ending!!! That ending prompted me to round up instead of rounding down.

I'm enjoying the hell out of this ride.

4.5 Emotional Stars Reviewage on Prism Book Alliance

It doesn’t take long before Whyborne and Griffin are headed towards a mystery. This mystery is the best kind of messy and jumbled pile of family, intimacy and heavy emotion.

Speaking of emotion, it also doesn’t take long before the first gut-punch of sorrow rears its low-hanging head.

This is the most personal and personally affecting of all of the stories so far in this series. The settings, subjects and circle of characters are all much more intimate. It was difficult to separate myself even from the supernatural aspects when things got tough. The heartache is more devastating.

I wanted to take this cup from her, but no one can swallow the dregs of another’s grief.

Paired with this, though, is the affection Ival and Grif share and is just as inseparable. The candor, support and desire between them are all deeply embedded and lovingly entangled.

The cast of supporting characters is colorful, including the best of all in Christine. She doesn’t have a lot of page time in this story, but what she does have is 100% Christine in her strengths of friendship and honesty.

Ms. Hawk knows this man Percival Endicott Whyborne. His sometimes unintentional humor. His growing confidence coupled with that streak of little self-awareness when it comes to the affect he can and does have on those dear to him. His desire to do right, not just by others but now for himself.

I thought the mystery was going one direction and then it took a turn and there were two. They were definitely connected but no one knew how, not yet.

Paranormal + historical + mystery + romance + friendship = this book and my contented joy at the rollercoaster of adventure I experienced in reading it. :D

Intensity is a constant companion in this story, even when it dips to nearly imperceptible levels. The conflict is so personal, I found myself often curled up while reading, muscles bunched. The creatures play an unexpected role in this story. In fact, there is a role reversal between human and monster.

This tale is the full realization of what the world of Widdershins has desired to become. These people, they’ve survived, their collective wills to live as they please is a force of strength we all search for and depend on.

If you’ve read the previous books in this series, I’m rather certain you will be thrilled by this latest immersion into the magic that is Whyborne and Griffin. If you’ve yet to try this crafty mix of adventure, romance, the supernatural, mystery and fun, then get thee to Widdershins! Post haste!

I ended up really liking the "monster of the week" part of the plot for this one, but wow, really wanted to shake Whyborne most of the time.

I've previously mentioned my frustration with being stuck with Whyborne's narration in these books - I find him a bit too self-pitying, especially given the definite privilege he has - and I really struggled with it in this book. His attitudes are so heavily based in that sort of "queer man born to privilege who feels cheated by the minor oppression he faces" that I had a really hard time feeling sympathy for him. Of course sometimes we second guess ourselves too much or care too much about what other people think, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't question our own assumptions, or acknowledge the opinions of people we care about.

Another repeated complaint about the series: too much relationship drama. Just let Whyborne and Griffin be happy together for a single book! There doesn't always need to be something coming between them.

Really liked this one. Finally, the mother and sister(s) mysteries are solved. i knew it!!

description

Benedict Cumberbatch is how I picture Whyborne. Kind of weird looking, but he grows on you. There are even angles where he's handsome. But I can definitely see him being ... not quite of this world :P

The man on the cover is much better looking. More attractive than the model for Griffin, in any case.

But Whyborne is getting handsomer as he comes into his own... rather like some of Benedict's characters too (he was rather delish in Star Trek :P)

Looks like he worked out??

Best book in the series so far.
I wrote in my review of Necropolis that Whyborne would need Griffin to keep him in check while he explored his powers and it seems that I was right. Not that I was expecting all that happened in Bloodline, of course, and even what I expected didn't go quite as I thought.

One of the things I liked most was the lack of unnecessary drama going on for ages.

Whyborne learned quite a bit about himself and his family in this book, he also learned who his real friends are and I'm sure this lesson will be useful for the future.
I loved the ending, it was just perfect after

I can't wait to find out what’s in store next.

This book is pure MAGIC!!! It's perfection!!!

I loved all the books of this series, but this one is, without a doubt, the best so far!

Whyborne, Griffin and Christine... what amazing set of characters! Once again, they found themselves faced with mysteries, murders and sea monsters!

Magic calls for Whyborne, and he has always the same dilemma: he don't want to betray Griffin's trust by using and practicing magic, and, on the other hand, he wants to know more, so he can protect those he loves. But facing a very powerful threat for the city of Widdershins, they have to use all the powers available!

Whyborne's family is surrounded by mysteries and secrets! In this book he finds more about his ancestors and mostly, about himself! Griffin is always by his side, supporting him, giving him strength... together, they are one of the most fabulous couples! Their love is so beautiful and honest! I just can't get enough!

The ending is superb!!!

There will be more in 2015! Can't wait!

5 stars This is how you do Historical Romance People.

Miss Hawk killed it. I was hesitant reading this after Necroplis. It was my least favorite of the series, and like so many other series they more books they have the lesser quality work is produced. I'm biting my damn tongue from now on. I was completely blown away. I read this book in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. I was like Whyborne why, why, why. You know how every book one of the three main characters tend to shine more; well this book Whyborne showed up & showed out definitely. Oh man, did Miss Hawk through some surprises in this book. I couldn't believe the amount of confidence, determination, and attitude Whyborne had. He wasn't not having it this book. No one was safe from his wrath including the lovely Christine and Masculine Griffin they were both on his list whatever it was called.

I love Griffin, everything about him. To me he's so perfect. Griffin admits his flaws and tends to ask for help where as Whyborne is definite in trying to do it himself. It makes sense seeing as how he was brought up.

In this installment they are back in Widdershins, and it involves sea monsters, ships, mysterious cousins, siblings, parents, parents servants, founding families. Just a regular day in Mystic Falls(<--- I'm still reeling on last nights Vampire Diaries). We get to celebrate Whyborne's birthday somewhat. As usual the damn museum makes Christine & Whyborne do all the damn work on top of figuring out a mystery. I don't want to give anything away because it's wrong and you should just read it.

I am impatiently waiting for book 6. After this ending my mouth was wild open and tears were streaming down my face. I can not wait to see what she is going to produce. Please don't let us wait a year. I am going to die slowly.

Family secrets, forgotten legends, new powers discovered.

I’m happy to say that this series is evolving. All the little mysteries and paranormal happenings from prior books have been adding up to this story, and what will happen next can only mean that there are big, very big, things awaiting for our favorite fussy philologist.

There were a few issues that niggled though. For such a smart man, Whyborne is still a bit sheltered in such a cutthroat world of survival of the fittest. You would think that because of all he’s seen and been through, he would have a bit of a chip on his shoulder, a bit of wariness or guardedness, but no. Years of not belonging and being bullied has shaped him into wanting to protect all that he holds dear, which allows me to forgive his naïveté since he always has the best intentions, however misguided.

And Griffin. Swoony swoony Griffin. Ever brave, honorable, and utterly devoted to Whyborne, he never wavers. Again, these two and their love is the best thing about this series. I will bask in it over and over.

So, this was definitely a game changer. Major reveals are uncovered, which pretty much turns the entire paradigm upside down. I look forward to what unfolds next for our lovable unconventional sorcerer and his ex-lawman lover. No doubt, things are only going to get more complicated and inevitably dangerously deadly! I say, bring it!!

Reread review 6/1/19:

Oh, Stanley. You deserve the biggest chankla of all. Whyborne earned his fair share too though.

I was interested to see how much of this I remembered. It was also neat to see how my perspective of certain events changed, knowing how things turned out. I even surprised myself by feeling a smidgeon of pity for Niles, and I think he might even care about Whyborne for realsies even before the events of this book.

Original review 7/19/15:

This one got a little weird. And a little predictable. The hints were there all along, right from the first book. I missed a few, but the more obvious ones were enough that I more or less knew where this story was going to end before I was even through the first couple of chapters. How it got there though was a little more in the air. Even though I did have it more or less figured out, Ms. Hawk provides enough question marks to keep some things up in the air.

I hate it whenever Griffin and Whyborne fight, and I was super worried at one point. Whyborne's ego was tripping all over the place in this book, helped along by his visiting cousins from England. I was having flashbacks to the mess that was Dark Willow on Buffy, but thankfully, things didn't get quite that far. And as always, our guys talk to each other and work things out. Griffin too learns how to be more accepting of Whyborne's skills with magic, and that was a treat to see as well. Hopefully, that point of conflict will be put to rest permanently, though I'm sure they'll find plenty of other things to argue about. ;)

The ending felt a little too contemporary for me, even if it came about by less than contemporary means, and I'm not really sure how I feel about it yet.

I understand this was supposed to be the original end of the series, and some of my friends have expressed concern about it continuing from here on out. I think there's still plenty of story to tell. and other minor threads hanging loose that I wouldn't mind seeing tied up. Onward I go.

This one gets all the stars ***** and then some...

Finally I got back to the world of Whyborne and Griffin and what a trip it was. This series was fantastical!!! But book #5 Bloodline amazed me. I became so involved and totally frustrated with Whyborne at times. In a way I saw where he was coming from. His intentions were good but the path he was going down...well quite frankly he was scaring me. Thankfully he had Griffin's love to anchor him in time for him to evaluate the virtue of what he wanted against what was actually happening.

There was so much revealed about Whyborne's family history and how it was affecting the events of the present it would be almost impossible to say more without a lot of spoilers or just spoiling things so I won't. I'm simply going to say this series was an absolutely fantastic reading experience. I loved everything about it...yes, even the horror aspect. There were no nightmares or things going bump in the night for me, it was for me done just right.

I am so looking forward to the release of book #6 Hoarfrost next month. It's already on my 'books I don't own but I will one day' shelf to remind me when it's being released because when it comes to Whyborne and Griffin I don't need a reminder to buy the book, just when to buy the book.

Warning: Spoilers and probable rant ahead

I wish I could have skipped this book, and I will do my best to forget all about it, so that I can hopefully enjoy the next one again.
So far this has been an extraordinarily good series, but unfortunately I cant’s say the same about Bloodline, at all actually.

What I hated the most is Whyborne’s & Griffin’s relationship in this book. Not only do they not occupy much of the space in this book together, the time they do is mostly spend in betrayal and lies. This made me sad and angry and partwise really uncomfortable.
The conflict between them has been evolving for several books now, and I think it very unfortunate that is has been spread out so far and for so long. I mean, it’s not like they hadn’t argued about this already and I thought they had overcome it too in Egypt.
I see that it makes sense in the broader scheme of Whyborne’s personality developement as a sorceror, though, but more in the sense that it made sense for the author to use it for this book, which is about Whyborne’s heritage and bloodline.
The worst for me was the sex they have when Whyborne is still on his power and ego trip and is constantly lying to Griffin. It literally made me sick to read this. After that, I think it was impossible for me to come back from it.
Except, the last 5% of the book, of W&G were absolutely fabulous, and it gives me hope for my future with this series.

The case… I am sure I would not have minded the things I do if I hadn’t been so upset about W&G. They hadn’t been great, either, but…
I actually like the developement and the broader plot: the revelations about Whyborne and his sister, that his mother is set free.
The smaller stuff, the execution, I found lacking, though. I could guess from the start who the bad guys were—all of them—, it was not surprising and maybe even obvious what part Whyborne plays. It would be better to not leave so many clues and hints for the reader. It gives the impression that the characters are dumb.
There was way too much drama for me in the showdown.

Yeah… As I said, I wish I had not read this book. But there is so much revealed about Whyborne that you can’t skip it and move on to the next.
2 stars because most of this sucked, except Christine, the wedding, and Persephone.

I enjoyed it, but Whyborne was so frustrating I just wanted to smack him... and because I couldn't, I had to take long breaks from the story.

«Ti amo.»

"I spoke thirteen languages, and yet I had no words to express what his presence meant to me."

I cannot recall the last time that a book made me cry as much as this one did. Especially during the last quarter of this book when the plot sped up and so many different things occurred at the same time. I barely had any time to process what had happened before something else was already happening, it was freaking intense. In truth I had to go outside for a bit to catch some air in order to calm myself down because it had that effect on me.

So far this is my favorite book in this series and the best one in my opinion. In this one the bond between Whyborne and his siblings is crucial and plays such a huge part in the plot. We get introduced to his older sister Guinevere who had moved away from America so that she could marry a wealthy earl in the United Kingdom. From the information that we received from her in the previous books she turned out exactly like I had imagined her.

From the very first book I already had a strong distaste toward Stanford since he was acting like a self-centered ass the whole time who found it his purpose to make Whyborne's life miserable. He excelled in that. Stanford was aware of the relationship between Whyborne and Griffin and he showed his disapproval of them in a rather despicable way. Let's just say that Stanford showed his true colors and they weren't pretty.

On the sibling aspect of the book I felt sorry for Whyborne because he basically had no band with either of his siblings and they both didn't really show him any form of sympathy. It made me want to shake them until they come to the realization of how wonderful their youngest brother truly was, but that was only a dream. Whyborne lost so much in this book concerning his siblings and reading about it was agonizing to say the least.

The things that made my gut melt was how adorable those moments between Whyborne and his mother were. Sure the two of them have always been the closest ever since he was born, but they tell each other everything. He even made his mother practice some magic which is so soft. I want more of his mother teasing him about Griffin, because he would go scarlet. His mother is an absolute dear.

“Then the town will rise to his hand," I whispered. "One for the sea, and one for the land.”

I have to write a small part of this review under a spoiler so that I don't accidentally spoil anything for someone who intends to read this series or who hasn't caught up with it yet, be warned.

Whyborne acted like a proper tit for a little while when he decided to practice magic with his distant Endicott cousins and when he joined their side to revel in his magic. It made him forget who he was. Sure I was proud when Whyborne finally acknowledged himself as a sorcerer after so long, but he was becoming someone who he wasn't. He even lied to Griffin about his whereabouts and the truth about where he actually was. It was to be expected that would cause a rift between the two of them, which is why I was ecstatic when Whyborne snapped out of it and became his old self again so that he could make it up with Griffin. He just wanted to keep him safe. Have you seen anything more precious?

"God, I wanted to kiss him. Not from passion, but from love and companionship, and all the other things I could never find the words to."

I'm going to keep repeating myself but I'm such a fan of the relationship between Whyborne and Griffin. Everything about them feels so real. They cannot express their feelings towards another in society because that will not be accepted, which is why Griffin always refers to him as my dear. Sure they continue to argue from time to time, but it's impossible for a couple to agree with each other all the damn time so it's realistic. It only draws them closer together, even when Griffin finds out the truth about Whyborne's ancestry and he's not repulsed by him in the slightest.

"Do you understand, Ival? I love you, and I will never give up on you."

Actual description of me

I need to praise Christine as well, especially for how she continues to handle everything in this series. She's such a likable character and she owns my heart because she doesn't take shit from anyone. Yes, she's a woman, but she has accomplished so fucking much. I cannot praise her enough because of it. She is more than welcome to walk all over me.

“I hope I'm not disturbing anything," he said with a smile.
"Just considering what birthday games Whyborne will be missing out on thanks to this wretched idea of the director's," she replied cheerfully. "I've gotten to Blind Man's Duff."
Griffin laughed. "How about Pin the Tail on -"
"Would you two stop?”

I have to stop writing this review at some point because else I'll be writing this for hours to come and that's time that I want to invest into reading the next book in this series. This is the book that toyed with my heartstrings and made me cry the hardest, which will mean that I will treasure it the most.

4.5

I can't even begin explaining just how much I am glad I didn't read any reviews before reading. I would have probably put this on hold same as some other series (not the books' fault, there are just too many tropes I dislike). The blurb is great though.

Unlike the previous books, there are no monsters nor horror here. There are creatures that some might consider monsters, of course. This is Widdershins, after all. However, Bloodline is not a horror story. A shame, really. That is one of the greatest things about this series: mysteries, lovecraftian and other monsters, three great characters, and underneath it all - a great romance. This book doesn't have that perfect feeling of dread Threshold or Stormhaven have, nor the adventure and rush of Necropolis.
What it has is a lot of heartbreak, some of the characters acting out, too many changes and a promise of a great sixth book.

As for the mystery, you get a very good murder mystery. A lot of suspects.

The characters are what changed the most. There is this very slow part somewhere in the middle of the book where Whyborne is acting out of character. His reasons are more than understandable and not unexpected, but that particular part was way too long not to mess up my reading experience. There are issues in other books, but nothing is dragged out on more than a couple of pages; just as much as the story needs (for example episodes in Threshold with Elliot, or Whyborne finding Griffin's documents in Widdershins). With the town itself offering so much, it was not necessary.

I loved, loved Griffin. He is one of the reasons I loved this book. While he isn't exactly neglected as a character in other books, he is great here. A feat, considering that we don't have his point of view.
Christine is the one neglected here though. She had larger role in other books.
It is impossible to write about other characters, old and new, without spoilers, so I will just say that Whyborne is not the only one who acts weird (to put it mildly).

The ending is something I read more than once.

I didn't love this book as the other four. Bloodline lacks horror and that combined with the slow part makes this my least favourite in the series. While it does have horror elements, they are just there because they are unavoidable - it is Widdershins. Unfortunately, they are just that - elements. But this is one of those stories that you keep finding things that touched you while thinking about it.
I still love this series.
