I'm trying to remember a conversation from a few years ago, but my friend said she hated her publisher at the time and could only get out of her contract with them if the sales of one of her books fell below a certain number. Hence, Penhallow. She must have really hated that publisher!

I listened to some more of Greenwode on the bus this weekend. I'm 50/50 on it right now. I'm enjoying it in that it's a kinda fun story, and I like the characters... I just don't know where it's going. The plot is waaaay too loose for me. I need to know what the point is and I'm well over the halfway point. When I feel like I can take a nap in the middle and not miss much, there's something wrong. But at least the two boys finally got together. lol.

I will eventually give the Dresden files another chance. I have books 4 and 5 on audio but I didn't care for the 3rd one much. I thought it was a little ridiculous, even for UF, how Harry comes *thisclose* to dying every other chapter.

I enjoyed reading Ethan, Who Loved Carter, too. Good to know you liked the narration. DSP audio books are hit or miss for me. I haven't bought many lately.

LOL he comes "THISCLOSE" to dying every book, and averts the Apocalypse. You just have to figure it's part and parcel of the series. The characters are what keep me coming back. Harry's "voice" and all of his friends. I still want to know what happens next.

Oh and the ending of Grave Peril (book 3) was awesome! (view spoiler)

I wish Paul Blackthorne read the audios, I just can't hear Harry in James Marsters, he's all wrong :-(

I'm listening now to The Masqueraders read by Ruth Sillers. The book is one of my favourites, because Sir Anthony and Prudence like each other direct from the start. I'm asking me often, when Anthony has the first guess, that Peter is a woman?
The audiobook is not such a good one in my opinion. I'm not so fond of the voice and the way of reading is like bad theater. It is a pity.

That is a pity. I may bump it down my list a bit. A bad reading of a favorite book isn't quite as bad as a bad movie made from one, but it can sap some of the fun out of it. I may just re-read the story.

The Black Moth is another of my favorite -- the real love affair in that one is between Miles and Jack. :-)

Christina, but with tea (steepedinbooks) | -1 comments I read "Powder and Patch" when I was about 12 or so. My grandmother gave me a box of books that was a mix of Georgette Heyer, Barbara Cartland, gothic romances, and "nurse stories". My mom didn't approve of romances so I hid them and read them in my closet. :)

I did have it wrong, and I didn't have to email my friend to get a better version of the tale. It's on her Wikipedia page. They had an option on her next book, and she disliked them, so she wrote something they would turn down. Still a strange story.

Now THAT I can see. That's standard practice when trying to wriggle out of a horrid contract. The problem with Penhallow is it's not bad -- it's more than competent -- it's just not what anyone really loves in Heyer.

Martin Jarvis is always excellent. I like Ian Carmichael's version best, I think. I just listened to a sample of Jonathan Cecil (who seems to narrate most if the unabridged versions available from Audible). I recognise his voice and I like the way he does it, too.

I finished Greenwode last night. OMG, that ending! I'm amazed at the amount of research she did for these books and the fact that she apparently wrote them over 20 years ago!

I obviously know nothing about Robin Hood, since I've never heard of Gamelain, if I'm spelling that right.

I might just get the next one even though it's clear that the romance is over for awhile.

But I think I'm going to start one of Aleks's works next as a break from the historical fantasy.

Thanks. I listened to the samples too. Sometimes they are just too short to really get an idea. I think I'm going to go with Martin Jarvis, simply because the sound quality on the Ian Carmichael version wasn't as good.

Mtsnow13 | 1115 comments Anyone that is interested, I just found this cool app in iTunes called 'Voice Dream' that will read PDF and non-DRM books back to you on the iPad and there are even packaged voices for purchase. *Caution, some sound very computerized*

It's not the same as a professional audiobook, but I bought 'James' voice for $2.99 (it comes packaged with Heather) and I am able to speed his voice up to meet my preferred pace.

Finally there is something like kindle whisper voice...

The app is $9.99, but it's worth it to me for when I need to get other stuff done. I do believe they have a free version with ads...

I've downloaded the app but haven't tried it out yet. I have a lot of playlists in Spotify.

What kind of music do you tend to like? You might think I have bad taste. ;-)

I listen to mostly alternative/indie rock and folk. Some random songs from one of my largest playlists:

Robbers - The 1975
Laundry Room - The Avett Brothers
Skinny Love - Birdy (original by Bon Iver)
My Silver Lining - First Aid Kit
Shake - The Head and the Heart
Young Fathers - Typhoon
Goddamn Lonely Love - Jason Isbell/Drive-by Truckers
Different Days (anything by Jason Isbell - love, love him)
The John Wayne - Little Green Cars
House of Gold - Twenty One Pilots
March Into the Sun - Echosmith
Let Me In - Grouplove
Tip of My Tongue - The Civil Wars
No One's Gonna Love You - Band of Horses
Dream a Little Crazy - Architecture In Helsinki
Kill Your Heroes - AWOLNATION
Hell and Back - The Airborne Toxic Event
Come with Me Now - KONGOS
Dirty Paws - Of Monsters and Men
Unbelievers - Vampire Weekend
We Come Running - Youngblood Hawke
Don't Carry It All - The Decemberists
Do I Wanna Know? - Arctic Monkeys
I've Told You Now - Sam Smith

I could go on. ;-)

Thanks for the heads up! I am loving this Prime thing. If you think your musical taste is strange wait until you hear the titles of my musical library. They range from opera, classical, celtic, folk and then jump to Indie Rock and a lot of electronica and glitch.

I read Ulysses in my early twenties, Danish translation since at that time they hadn't translated it into Norwegian yet. ( the written languages are very similar). I don't think I would have the stamina or patience to read it or listen to it these days.
