Any suggestions for good m/m or other must have audio books that are not Josh's (because I've got all of them)?

Other than m/m, what are your favourite genres?

message 1756: by Mtsnow13 (last edited Mar 30, 2014 10:27AM) (new)

Mtsnow13 | 1115 comments I would suggest, if you haven't read Rhys Ford's newer series she has on there.
These are a few I enjoyed:

40 Souls to Keep
Outcast Mine
In Darkness Bound
Acrobat
Widdershins
Caught Running
The Druid Stone
The Adorned
American Love Songs
and the Cut & Run series.

If you are looking to use up credits, DSP has quite a few new releases.. I'd check their ratings on GR, and then listen to the sample to see if you like the narrator first. Sometimes the narrator has ruined it for me.

Of m/m I rec
The Druid Stone by Heidi Belleau and Violetta Vane (check the sample, it's not narrated in an American accent)
American Lovesongs by Ashlyn Kane
Caught Running by Madeleine Urban and Abigail Roux
Tigers and Devils by Sean Kennedy

You and Mtsnow13 both said The Druid Stone. I haven't read that. Will have a look and listen to the sample. Thank you! :-)

Tigers and Devils by Sean Kennedy

I've got that one as an audio book because of the good reviews but I didn't exactly like it... I'm the odd one here. *sorry*

I think most of Trudi Canavan's books has made it to audio

It's not elves as such in the Judith Tarr series, or maybe elves just mean something different for a Dane :p
But, it's really, really good :-)

Exactly..I understand, but he DOES get better after the first few chapters...that's the one issue I had with the audiobook.. but the story pulled me in after awhile.

Becky Black (beckyblack) I'll maybe give it another go then. Audible does have a good returns policy for if you really don't like the book.

I only read the book recently and really loved it.

I just finished listening to this one a couple of days ago. I, too, had a hard time in getting used to the narration. Also, I found the small hums, clicks and fixes irritating. But, I did like the story itself.

I just started to listen to The Nothingness of Ben yesterday. I'm glad to hear you liked it. :-) I'm only in the beginning, but I'm having mixed feelings about this narrator, too. Especially the way he narrates the neighbour guy from Texas. I wonder how it sounds to a person living in US? Correct and alright?

I'm afraid I've listened to so many Josh's audio books lately that anything not as perfect as those makes me twitch... ;-)

I liked this book and The Return. They're long and sometimes go on a bit, but a there's a lot of heart in them. I listened to the sample on Audible, but it doesn't include Travis's voice, so I can't give you feedback on that. I do like the way Ben and Collin are read. I will say that most of the people I've met from Austin don't have a pronounced "Texan accent," rather an intonation with a bit of southern softness/gentility. But Travis is "working class" and perhaps less urbanized?

I listened to Widdershins a little while ago and didn't have a problem with it. My only issues was being stressed out and exhausted which meant I wasn't prepared for murdering monsters. lol.

I haven't read Rhys Ford yet either, but those blurbs sound good, and since I'm looking for more audio books and fewer print/ebooks, I'll go for them!

After seeing all the wonderful suggestions I decided to get Midnight Riot and then, guess what... I can't buy it. It's a rights problem (again!). The books were translated into German and there are (abridged) audio books in German sold here, but the original isn't available for me. Not on audible.de nor on audible.com. *argh*
I had the same issue with "American Gods" before when I actually phoned audible... (I ended up byuing a CD on ebay) Don't you just love those artifical boundaries on the internet?

I'm probably going to buy The Druid Stone instead.

Unfortunately for me, I didn't enjoy the audio version of The Nothingness of Ben, which is strange, as loved the narrator when he did Hot Head. I think it was the Texan accent, and for some reason, the other MC sounded rather arrogant to me... but I see a lot of others loved it!

It is funny how different tastes are. I DNF'd The Druid Stone and Outcast Mine, but I think I just didn't care for the stories (I was bored!). I think the narrators were just okay.

message 1792: by Susinok (new)

Susinok | 5205 comments I thought the narrator carried off the MCs in Nothingness of Ben fairly well. But I live around Okie and Texas accents and they do not sound fake to me. Ben WAS arrogant when he first moved down to take care of his brothers. That's part of his growth in the book.

Hehe, I seem to DNF many of the most popular books, like The Nothingness of Ben and Hot Head further up the thread, they were boring and I wanted the MCs to just die and put us all out of the misery :p

message 1795: by Mtsnow13 (last edited Apr 04, 2014 04:42AM) (new)

Mtsnow13 | 1115 comments I was stationed in the south (NC, SC, FL, TX) for quite a few years, and have the uncomfortable habit of falling into the accent when I'm speaking with someone who is from the south. Don't even realize I'm doing it, and when it's pointed out, I have to make sure they don't think I'm making fun...

I have an ear for accents, and seem to morph into using them...kind of embarrassing. The side effect is that I can typically understand thicker accents than many of my coworkers and family members, though. And many have a hard time figuring out where I'm from due to always moving every couple years growing up. Now I tend to get a Canadian, or Minnesota accent, using the term 'eh' often, as there are many that visit this part of Montana.

I usually like her books, but Whiskey and Wry was too over the top for me, the villain was supposed to be superbad, but ended up being ludicrous in my opinion. Something about the writing didn't do it for me either, I found it very clunky. I liked Sinner's Gin though, the first in the series, so will give it another chance I guess.

Calathea | 6034 comments In the end I got The Little Death and listened to the first three chapters on my drive this morning. I like the voice of the narrator.

I do that with Norwegian dialects, probably because we used to move around when I was a child so I grew up speaking very different dialects. Now I can hear myself parroting others if I am not careful, especially if they are from the far North of Norway where I spent early years, or the West Coast.(They are very different too) Naturally, my own way of speaking is a mix of everything, also flavoured by the Oslo dialect since this is where I have been living as an adult.

message 1799: by LJ (last edited Mar 31, 2014 12:44AM) (new)

LJ (ljwinn) | 18 comments Druid Stone was a DNF for me too, the narrator was fine but the story not so much. I finished Outcast Mine but only because the narration was good, again I personally found the story and writing lacking. I've listened to the sample of Widdershins a couple of times and I'm not sold on the narration.

My favourite M/M listen (with AE being a close second) has been J. Tullos Hennig's retelling of the Robin Hood Legend in Greenwode and Shirewode. For the most part the narration is very good - a few niggles - and the story and writing are excellent - I'd recommend them highly for fantasy or speculative fiction fans who also like a strong romance element.

I've recently purchased Jess Faraday's The Affair of the Porcelain Dog, Jeff Mann's Purgatory: A Novel of the Civil War, and James Lear's The Hardest Thing: A Dan Stagg Mystery.

I've also downloaded FayJay's Student Prince, it sounds good and I enjoyed reading it. Made me all smiley. I'd love to hear Footloose's Loaded March on audio!

I'm considering Nick Nolan's Strings Attached, Double Bound and Wide Asleep as they are narrated by the seriously good Luke Daniels. He has the ability to make a weak book a compelling listen. But I've never read the author so not sure... Better Than Good by Lane Hayes also looks promising as does Aaron by J.P. Barnaby - both narrated by Tyler Stevens (the samples sound pretty good). I haven't read either of these books. Has anyone tried these audio titles?

On the non-M/M front I've recently finished listening to Timothy Hallinan's A Nail Through the Heart. Narrated by Victor Bevine, another exceptional narrator. If you're interested in Thailand, thrillers and good writing and narration this is a winner.

So many audiobooks, and so little time!!!!
