Andrea Please post your thoughts on this section.

Lisa Unlike some other classics, I thought The Count of Monte Cristo immeditely jumped into the story line. I was grateful that I did not have to "slog" through fifty pages before I got to something interesting. I was totally engaged by these first pages.

Andrea That's encouraging Lisa! I plan on starting it today so I'll be posting my thoughts later.

Jess :) I agree Lisa, the storyline picks up immediately. This has been very entertaining and easy to read so far!

Andrea I started last night and so far I'm enjoying it a lot and finding the reading easy for a classic!

AM10000 Excellent start! I was worried about not getting started soon enough and falling behind since I just got the book this Wednesday! However I have finished this first section already. :)

Sherrie (sherriewelch) I tend to like books that are character driven rather than plot driven and this is not one of those. The characters seem like cardboard cutouts so maybe I should think about whether the story is actually about the characters or whether the characters are symbols for something else.

Shea I am enjoying the story so far. I agree with Sherrie that the characters seem a bit shallow. I hope we see more depth as the story progresses. I was entertained when the dates listed in the book (i.e. February 23rd and then later March 3) came up on the same day I was reading that section. I think we started it at the perfect time. I look forward to really getting into the story and having lively discussions.

JoLene (trvl2mtns) I wasn't able to start until Mar 1 and am pleasantly surprised with what we've read so far. This is definitely a plot-driven book which I'm fine with. The plot seems like a "perfect storm" situation when the letter was intended for Villefort's father.
Side Question: What is up with the french seeming to change their last names at will.

I did spend some time wondering what the motivation for Danglers was --- it seems odd that a "supercargo" would be qualified to be a captain. Isn't the "supercargo" the guy in charge of the accounting and finance related to the cargo?

Ellen Librarian (ellenlibrarian) | 172 comments JoLene, I thought it was said that the supercargo was the next in line of authority after Dantes. Maybe he's like the CFO?

message 12: by JoLene (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) OK...might have missed that, but still seems like a very different skill set :-D

Izzy Holmes What a great start never knew why Dante was put in prison
