Yeah, tell me more... ;b I'm from Poland and I guess you know what people talk about Poles sometimes...

Just guessing right now, but I think the next topic will be about stereotypes. ;D

Jojo (jojosbooknook) | 717 comments Oooo good idea Kamil!!!

message 155: by Savanes (new)

Savanes | 2107 comments Ooops, I didn't know there was a difference between stereotypes and prejudices. Sorry about the word misuse!

message 156: by Jojo (new)

Jojo (jojosbooknook) | 717 comments I would say they're synonyms, a lot of the stereotypes we've mentioned are then held as prejudices against groups of people. So easy to interchange the words!

message 157: by Anima (new)

Anima Miejska | 1698 comments I feel the same way, but, although, I don't relate to Wikipeda often, here is the explanation of the differences between the two terms that I agree with according to my psychological knowlegde :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereotype

ok, let me start then... I don't want to to edify you here so I'll be quick ;b Many people believe that Poles are stupid, poor, not well-behaved and that they come to your country only to steal your money (job) and get things which they cannot afford in Poland. Sooo... Nope...
If you really want I may explain some issues, but I wish I avoid writing an essay here. As we know there are many stereotypes and unfair accusations towards other countries and communities and we can't change it with complaining so I've got an idea...

Let's choose and recommend a book which may describe your country and its customs etc. and help other people understand your mother country . ;) How about this? ;)

message 159: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 21, 2013 02:15PM) (new)

Ups, I didn't noticed that you started to continue this discussion. Soo... sorry for a double post now. ;b

I think you're right ;) I think they are the same. Maybe from the linguistic point of view... ;b never mind. we understand each other, that's important.

I like that idea a lot, although I don't have any idea what book to choose for Poland :)

message 161: by [deleted user] (new)

I've heard sth about Shortcuts to Poland by Laura Klos Sokol, but honestly I've never read this. My lecturer from Canada told me about it. ;b

message 162: by Anima (new)

Anima Miejska | 1698 comments Well, it can be really interesting to read how people write about Poland for foreigners :) and check how stereotypical they are ;)

How the Scots Invented the Modern World: The True Story of How Western Europe's Poorest Nation Created Our World and Everything in It This is my choice for showing how us Scots aren't just a bunch of penny pinching, kilt wearing drunks!!

Brightness (brightnessreads) | 429 comments I'm from Atlanta, Georgia USA. When it comes to stereotypes, we're sometimes thought of as uneducated inbred rednecks and there's plenty more where that comes from. Oh, and 98% of southern accents in Hollywood movies are the most ridiculous things we've ever heard.
People are generally very nice and hospitable in the South and we have a very rich history. I don't have a particular book to recommend at the moment, but if I find one, I'll let you know. ;)

Joanne! That is so sad! lol Some people are just not very knowledgable about geography. I'm not very good at it either, but at least I know that Scotland and England are different countries!

By the way, my family took a wonderful vacation last year (Paris, London, Edinburgh). We got to see all the tourist sites in France; gorgeous architecture. We went to the Olympics in England and the festival in Scotland. We loved Scotland. I didn't want to leave!

Karlee - I agree on the stereotype and the reality. I've noticed that the media does nothing to sway the impression people have of the area. I feel as though they always choose someone that sounds uneducated to interview when there's anything that's national news. I've commented several times about this. The people they choose to interview do not represent the majority well.

I live in New England (the Boston area). Apparently, we are all rude, tough, and snobby. Oh, and we wear black all the time.

I used to live in New Hampshire and when I met people outside of the area they always asked about the cows! lol There were no cows in my area. There are cities in New Hampshire too.

You are so right, Karlee! I'm from North Carolina and proud to be a Southern girl. It's really sad the way people want to put a label on other people based on where they were born. Sure - there are plenty of rednecks in the South...but there are plenty of educated professional people too. And - some of the nicest people I know would be what others call a "redneck"! I say live and let live. We should all celebrate our differences. I think it would be a boring world if we were all alike.

Kristie, you hit the nail on the head when it comes to the media. Every time I'm watching the news I usually facepalm whenever I see who they decide to interview. We really aren't all ignorant inbred racists, but the media seems intent on perpetuating that notion. But the bottom line is, I think they do that everywhere.
And I'm glad you are all right. I know you've had a rough week up in Boston.

Sandra, I'm very proud of my Southern roots as well! And you are so right about live and let live. We're all different and we should celebrate that. It makes the world far more interesting doesn't it! :)
