SOLVED. Series about 2 brothers getting in trouble set in the 19th Century [s]

I believe I read every book in the series when I was in 7th gr back in the mid-eighties. Since it has been so long I could be off on my details...

It was about 2 brothers always up to something. I believe it was set in the late 1800s. They might put a frog in a lunch pail at school, or skip chores to go swimming in the lake or the older brother might try to trick the younger one into painting a fence he was asked to paint. It was just good clean fun, and I remember being absolutely tickled by all the adventures they seemed to go on. I was also enthralled by the details about how they used to live. So simple. So honest. So old-fashioned. So fun!

I believe the front cover was always an illustration about the type of adventure the boys had in that particular book. I think they were all hard back.

I am sorry this is not more detail-oriented. I want to let my own children read them (and maybe re-read them myself) so any help is appreciated...!
