Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3047 comments So I have wondered this for a little while now but the thought has really been puzzling me since I started reading the book I'm reading now..Why do some books have multiple cover arts? While I can understand there being different covers for paperback and hardcover versions and maybe even e-book versions it still leaves me wondering why there are multiple covers for different versions, for example the book I'm reading now has like 27 different versions and there's several different paperback covers and hardcovers..why is this? Is this a publishing company thing or an author request? As strange and as much as I don't get this at the same time I think it's cool. I mean if I had multiple ideas for a cover art for my book and I couldn't decide does this mean I could go ahead and make more then one? I'm sure this isn't the reason as to why a book has multiple covers so anybody can chime in here and tell me why they do that would be great!

Ken B | 6810 comments Interesting...the description of the book you are reading actually says "This is an alternate cover edition". I have noticed this on other books before and I always thought it was just to juice collectors out of more cash.

"I must have all alternative covers for Twilight! I must have all alternative covers for Twilight! I must have all alternative covers for Twilight!"

This is my favorite alternate Twilight cover. *shifty eyes*

John McNee I very much doubt it's an author request. It's rare that authors have any say over the covers of their books, at least in mainstream publishing.

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3047 comments Right? I Didn't even have a say in the cover of my book yet I come across these books such as the one i'm reading and they have like five or six different covers like huh?!

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3047 comments Well I went with PublishAmerica for my first book so theres a lot I didn't and don't have a say in but yeah.

The book I'm reading "Bandits" has seven different covers! Why so many?
Maybe cause of different publishers so they can't use the same cover? I dont really know its all just bizarre to me

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 1416 comments Yea, some of em change the covers for the different editions in different countries. I think also if the author changes publishers the book probably gets a new cover that the new publisher might think will be better. Or if it's an older book, then a lot of times they'll put a new cover on the new edition to attract attention to the book to generate new sales. Like some classics that get new editions with covers that may appeal to a new generation.
