Not letting me merge authors

I noticed that there's a J. Gabriel Gates and a J Gabriel Gates (supposed to be the same author); I went into J Gabriel Gates to change the name so the two profiles could merge, but then Goodreads tells me the author is a Goodreads author and responsible for editing his own page, so it wouldn't let me merge them. Umm... what do I do?
