Pain! Humor! Heartache!

This is the book that proved to me that what readers truly crave is lush blackened quotable damage.

Casey (wallflowerrevolution) | 3 comments Yay! I am so excited that there is now a conversation about It's Kind of a Funny Story! I love this book so very much.

Shelli | 2 comments Seriously! I was wondering why every single person isn't clamoring to discuss this book. It's so full of depth, reality, compassion...(I could go on and on). Such a testament to mental health, illustrating those that may struggle with their own mental health issues are still human. I am a child psychologist and I absolutely loved this book and all it had to convey about knowing someone for who they are and not judging by the struggles that they may be experiencing. I am excited there's a movie being made, yet a little nervous too, the book is too perfect in my head!!

Shelli | 2 comments What? How did I miss that????

Colby (colbz) Ned, this is the book that got me hooked on you, by far your best. It's so real and well-written and quirky...I just love it. When the movie came out on DVD, we had about 3-4 feet of snow here in Kansas and yet my friend and I made his mother take us to Walmart so we could buy it!

It really did show that people with mental health problems are human, yes! I mean, I don't have depression, but I have trichotillomania which is compulsive hair pulling and the book still relates. Why? Because however it was written was so amazing that it just makes you not feel alone, no matter what mental health thing your going through. It's not restricted to depression and I love it. Also, since I'm posting something, thanks for writing the novel, Ned Vizzini.

Thank you for the support Colby and Casey. Means a lot to me. Walmart doesn't have the book but they have the movie, that's a nice thing about movies

Christopher (angerandagony) | 2 comments I watched the movie and instantly wanted to read the book.

Ned, this plotline was amazing. I loved it.

This book was there for me when I was as down and stressed as Craig. I was ready to end it, too, but reading this book gave be something to look forward to.

Life.

Thank you, Ned. I am your number 1 fan at my school, you are my favorite author, and IKoaFS is my favorite book. EVER.

Aly (thewalkingaly) | 1 comments It's Kind of a Funny Story is and will always be a favorite book of mine. I read it earlier this year, and I just loved it. Ned, you're wonderful. Thanks for writing such a moving and great novel!

message 13: by Aby (new) - rated it 4 stars

Aby (paperlegends) for the record, I couldn't really finish this book for weeks because I had to put it down at some parts and walk around a bit so I wouldn't accidentally trigger myself. It's /that/ good and /that/ close to home.

Jenna (jennaraew) | 1 comments I absolutely love this book! It actually kicked off my reading obsession! It's so unbelievably amazing! I honestly read it in about a day in a half. It's my favorite book of all time.

I think you're being faux self-deprecating, Ned, but I still wanted to say that, to me, what made this book so memorable was how personal it was. Besides dealing with real world problems, Craig's voice is so clear and distinct. He himself was self-deprecating, but I never doubted the severity of the burdensome weight he felt he carried. The often joking tone somehow made it all the more real and familiar, because we all joke through difficult times, especially when feeling forced to talk about it. I think most readers see so much of Craig Gilner in themselves. Those moments were certainly what prompted me to write that song a few years ago that was inspired by the book.

While this is only one of your books, each with their own pros, the voice in this book, as well as the high percentage of it you say is based on fact, makes me wonder if your writing will ever explore memoir.

Brad, my book Teen Angst? Naaah... is a memoir:

Thank you for the kind words! Yes it is possible I will explore memoir in the future, but memoirs of adult life are hard because you spend so much time just being on the phone with customer service

Brad | 3 comments Haha! Observations like that help make light of the occasional monotony of adult life.

ɯɐɔ (camalama) | 1 comments After watching the movie, I sort of kind of HAD TO READ THE BOOK. My life literally changed and I crawled out of the suicidal depression I was in. Craig calling the suicide hotline finally led me to call a hotline, just so I could let out all my problems, and they told me to tell someone that I could, well, actually see. xD I did, and...oh. Life is better. It's still screwed, but better. Thanks, Ned. :)

I also noticed--in the opening scene of the movie, when they're going through the students, and describing their successes? Craig is 'reading' one of your books.

Cam I don't know how you got your name to be backwards like that, very nice. Yes I did notice that in the movie, also the "music teacher" in the hospital is wearing a Drunk Horse T-shirt that is mine and that I still own. More tidbits here: http://ned-vizzini.livejournal.com/17...

thank you for your kind words!

Rebel | 1 comments I watched the movie two years ago, and I literally wrote down some of the dialogues because Craig's words explained everything I was feeling. I immediately wanted to read the book but couldn't find it anywhere (I live in Argentina!), and the only bookstore that sells it had run out of stock, and it was also kinda expensive. But after waiting for three months, I bought it and it was definitely money well spent.
Sorry for ranting, but I just wanted to let you know how much your book inspired me and helped me deal with my own issues.
So, thank you for sharing your story with us! You are awesome :D
