Why does everyone keep hating on the new characters?

I don't really hate them, but I haven't fallen in love with them yet. We had an entire five books to fall in love with PJO characters and we only had one book each for the rest of the seven. I guess Leo's just the exception.
I don't know, I think it's just harder to bond with them after only a couple books.

Leo actually gets character development and his voice is the most unique among the new characters. He obviously is the most popular because of this.
Jason, well, is a jerk (at least in MoA, he was okay although rather bland in LH). Don't know if Rick was being biased against the Romans, but Jason was generally incompetent in MoA and has no honor anymore for himself or for Camp Jupiter.
Piper is a speshul princess who is never portrayed in a negative light throughout the series. She has a lot of flaws that no one calls her out on so she's fitting the criteria for Mary Sue. On the other hand, she has the most potential to be one of the best written characters in the series since her personality is more fleshed out than the other characters THAT IS if someone calls her out on her flaws.
Frank and Hazel are more defined by their powers rather than their personality. Hence why not a lot of people pay attention to them.
On the other hand, Percy is starting to get on my nerves with his arrogance. Hopefully, in HoH, RR would return him to his PJO!personality. Actually, I hope all the Romans and Piper get actual development in the next book.

WOW! You seriously just summed up what I was gonna say! ;D

I pretty much agree with you! Yes on Jason and Leo, but I feel Piper is very annoying just because she whines a lot and seems a bit selfish and ungrateful. I totally know what you mean about Frank and Hazel, too. However, I feel like Percy is just as lovable as ever (keep in mind im totally biased because I love PJ soo much)

Agreed! The characterization of the new series was not the best, making the characters not the best

I personally like Percy and Annabeth the best, of course. Who doesn't!
Piper does whine a lot. I also think she is a burden on the rest of the seven because she is a really PATHETIC fighter. The only thing she can do is sweet talk people, which is not always the most helpful weapon. Don't like her too much.
Leo is kinda/really weird. He also complains about be the seventh wheel, which is getting annoying.
Jason is boring. He doesn't have the personality Percy and Annabeth do. He is also so quiet and thinks he should always be in charge because is is the son of Jupiter. Big deal. I think Percy could beat him up.
Frank is boring and weird. Again, He doesn't have the personality Percy and Annabeth do. (and he looks like a baby, which is funny, but adds to his strangeness)
I like mostly like Hazel. She is so different because she is from the past, which is cool, and makes her so different. It is also cool that she is the only one who hates her power, which puts a twist on things.
Don't mean to beat up the new characters, I still think that they are really cool. I am really only pointing out the bad stuff, and not mentioning the good. It is probably reasons like this that everyone still favors Percy and Annabeth.

Jason is really odd. Even Annabeth didn't trust him. I mean, he's so big on the 'Son of Jupiter' thing and always deserving to be in control that it makes it hard to like him. Plus, let's not forget that percy beat him in the eidolon fight.
Leo's awesome. He doesn't really fir in with the Seven, which makes him more likable.
Frank and Hazel are cool. I like Hazel and Frank's great, but I'm Team Leo in that 'love triangle'.
I think that Percy and Annabeth are the best just because they're the most developed. We've gotten to see them mature for what, five years now. It'd be impossible for us to like any of the other characters as much as them just because we know Percabeth so much better.

Yea! Team Leo! ;D

Okay, I'm hearing a lot of people saying that one of the reasons they dont like Piper is because she doesnt fight very well. In her defense, the whole fighting thing isn't really her strategy. There are plenty of fighters in the group, that Piper not being able to fight well isn't much of a loss. In fact, she is a whole lot more of an asset with her charmspeak than if she had fighting skills. Seriously, she saved their butts too many times to count throughout the series.
Also, Percy didn't "beat" Jason in the eidolon fight. First of all, if my memory serves me correctly (which it does) Piper broke up the fight, not Percy (again, another plus for Piper) and also, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the eidolons were controlling Percy and Jason, which means that the eidolons were fighting each other, Percy and Jason were mere vessels that held the creatures. So it didnt have anything to do with Percy and Jasons skill level, since they werent even fighting.
So yeah.

I agree with you. Everyone loves Leo, but they just forget Jason and Piper, which I totally understand why. They aren't my personal favorites, but they're ok. I really love Leo, Hazel, Percy, and Annabeth. Reyna is cool too. Idk, they probably find them annoying and boring.
For the people who are saying Piper is a useless character, that's basically saying Rick Riordan doesn't know what he's doing, which he probably does. But of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

they need to do something very amazing to be liked because they have competition with the old characters.
Anyways after falling in love with PJ its hard to love any other character without feeling you are betraying them LOL XD

I love everyone else though, they are all vital to the story and have great personalities.

As I was saying before I got into wherever I was going with that, Frank and Hazel reminded me of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern from Hamlet. They are mainly present with the other close by,and when they ARE away they are hardly thought of if separately. Both of their pasts are colorful and interesting but for some reason it doesn't make THEM interesting.
Hopefully House of Hades leaves room for further character building. Its sort of like the avengers, its hard to juggle multiple egos and action at the same time. But if anyone could do it, Riordan can.

Me too! Except for Piper-I would hate Piper no matter how long she existed in the books.

i personally LOOOOVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEE hazel and frank and leo and percy and annabeth, I dont like jason and piper for other reason thats too long to explain here(and they are not stupid reasons like some people give).I liked Piper and Jason BETTER(not love cuz i still had my problems, but better) in TLH but not at all in the MOA. But I certainly dont hate them. They are important to the story!

I totally agree with you on Piper but Jason just isn't portrayed the way Percy was, you know like, you don't know how he feels and you just don't get the feel of him. I like Piper as a character, I just hope that RR will make her mature some more and stop obsessing with Jason, that is the one thing that annoys me about her.

Me too, I just don't like Frank that much for some reason, maybe because he doesn't like Leo, Idk, but I just don't like him like I like the other characters.
I like them all. They're great characters, and they keep the story going.

Piper... my only issue with her is that for an aphrodite daughter who rejects the airhead department of her clan she sure can be whiny and melodramatic and possesive. if someone calls her out on that i will like her a bit better.
Jason... complaints of blandness are the main complaint most people say.but i think he's a nice guy(most of the time, no forgiveness for dissing reyna)what's wrong with confidence? usually people are crazy with the character's indecisevness but cut them down when they have some solid choices!! people!!
frank...fine character, bit possesive of Hazel w/o letting poor leo know reason for hostility,
leo...cool, makes you feel for him
Hazel...she was amazingly selfless with her death and sticks up for Nico. she's alright in my book.
Yeah, HOO has inferior writing to PJO.
The problem is that Percy and Annabeth are in the book, meaning that we will have favoritism for them over the new characters because we already followed Percy and Annabeth's adventures in the previous series.

Now, I guess, to a degree, I get what people are saying. Personally, I like Percy & Annabeth & Leo the most out of the seven, BUT that does NOT mean I hate the others!
Now, I dont want this to go into an all-out war or anything, I'm just curious to know what people think.
