So what did you think of this book? Did you like it? See I have come across this book a couple of times and I have even bought it but i was wondering if it is worth the read. Would you recommend it? I love reading and I know this is a classic but I was wondering if anyone liked it and would you recommend it to me? Because I don't know if I should read it or not... Thank you

☯Emily Ginder Some people love it and others don't. Even if you don't like it (and I didn't), it is worth reading. If you want an uplifting book with a happy ending, then this is not the book for you.

Mochaspresso I hated the book with a passion, but I am not sorry that I read it.

Ruba l loved this book and still go back and read it as a whole or chapters of it.
for me it's the appeal of love hate relationship and the REVENGE of the main character.
strongly recommend you to read it

Erin O'Riordan The first time I read it (in high school, age 17) I didn't like it at all. I gave it another chance about 8 or 9 years after that and completely fell in love with it. Now I think it's probably my favorite book ever. The characters are unforgettable and the storytelling, even though it's old-fashioned, is very compelling. I read it about every other year.

McGee Magoo I read this book about two years ago almost immediately after reading Frankenstein. Tragedies aren't my favorite reading but I was struck how with Frankenstein, I was genuinely sympathetic to every character in the book. But in W. H....there was not a major player that was worthy of sympathy. If you like tragedies, but need to like one of the characters, this book is not one you'd enjoy. It's worth reading, I suppose--if you don't already have lots of other books waiting to be read.

It's beyond amazing.

I thought the book was well written, the character development was stellar, the storyline itself is a admirable feat, as it is more or less a tale of unrequited love, and so on. But Emily Bronte handles the narrative so well and makes it her own, it feels original.

However, I didn't really enjoy the book. Several characters were such selfish and immature people! (Heathcliff especially got on my nerves). And the story doesn't have a lot of redemption at the end, but it does have some. However, I am glad I read it, as I want to be familiar with the classics.

Bronwen Jones I recently reread WH after maybe 40 years, and was shocked to discover how compellingly ghastly, mean, pathetic, and/or miserable all the characters are in their own special ways, including the setting. But I was hooked beginning to end. In my mind, WH is a masterful novel.

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

I absolutely loved this book. I agree that the characters are wretched - especially Catherine in my opinion - but it makes for a very interesting tale, and it's masterfully told.

Shima I am torn... I passionately hate Catherine and I absolutely adore the story.
It is not happy book, but it triggers very strong emotions in the reader.
Anyone should read it ;)

Jennifer Achterhof I absolutely LOVED this book! It is not a happy ending type of book but I still thought it was great! I have read it multiple times and even purchased the audio book so I can listen to it!

message 13: by Anca (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anca I read this book for school and I had to answer this same question in front of my whole class, so here it goes. I absolutely hated the characters, really. They're awful, terrible actually. But I guess that's what made me like the book. It didn't even try to make me love any of the characters, something that was new to me. And I liked that.

message 14: by A.R. (new) - rated it 3 stars

A.R. Voss It is well written but extremely dry. Character's are horrible, but that is meant to be; unfortunately having horrible people as main characters makes the book less enjoyable to read.

message 15: by Bea (new) - rated it 5 stars

Bea Turvey The one thing that really bugs me about this book is that it is written in the third person so we never get the main characters' POV. Also, the second half of the book - post Cathy - is too long. I understand it links into his character and the deterioration of his empathy but the book didn't have to devote so much time to it. The storyline about Cathy's daughter and Heathcliffe's son was a book in its own right.

message 16: by Sara (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sara I would definitely recommend this book. The character development is spectacular, and the book contains more drama than an episode of a terrible reality show. While it is true that all the characters are miserable and terrible to each other, they are meant to be as such.

Sopho i love books that don't have happy ending.so i love this book. :)

Lauren Stoolfire I love the story and I would definitely recommend it. I don't particularly like Catherine and Heathcliff. They're pretty unlikable/ miserable/ wretched/ terrible, but they are very interesting to read. Also I don't really read it as a love story...that just doesn't work.

Lizzy Morales I love this book, the fact that present a love history different about others

Thoughtmix I loved this book. Although it seems rather dramatic, the writing is actually true to real life in that it reflects how intensely people experience feelings in life. An event that may not seem significant to others can be life-altering for an individual which I think is evident for the characters in this book.

Aileen Martin lengel Mochaspresso wrote: "I hated the book with a passion, but I am not sorry that I read it."

thank you, soooo dry and boring, can't figure out why its such a classic...

message 22: by Minnie (last edited Mar 23, 2013 06:41AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Minnie chung This book is the definition of all-sonsuming love for me.Come on, what girls have never dreamt of this kind of crazy love? If We cannot love each other, let the world crack>

Peter A dark and complex novel. It's definitely of literary merit but the story divides people because it is about a dark, obsessive, destructive relationship that casts a shadow over a whole generation of two families.

message 24: by M.J. (new) - rated it 5 stars

M.J. Penny Its delicious dark characters, compelling story-line and overall tone made this book one of my favourites. At the end of the day, it's what you're into, but very few books have had the same power for me as WH.

message 25: by Mary (last edited Mar 27, 2013 07:33AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mary Laidlaw I really enjoyed this book. I am not much for love stories, so that means a lot. It was different in that neither of the characters are "good" people, but you still root for them to be together. I would say that it is unique in this way. Plus I just really enjoy this time period when it comes to writing.

Lorraine King This book is one of my all time favourites. I fell in love with Heathcliff and Catherine but at the same time I wanted to throttle them. I watched the film version with Tom Hardy and cried at the end when they were both finally together.

message 27: by Gran (new) - rated it 4 stars

Gran Badshah This can rightly be ?termed" as a "master piece" IT represent a "class" of its own Its highly enjoyable - worth the time spent reading it

message 28: by Neon (new) - rated it 4 stars

Neon This book was in my shelf for about year and half before i started reading it, once i started i could not stop reading it. You will hate the main characters and depends if you will like the book or not. But i totally loved it. Love it or hate but you can't ignore it.

Malini I was not a fan of the characters when I first read it, (as a teen), and could not understand why people liked it so much and equated the "love" between Heathcliff and Cathy as something sublime. I thought Heathcliff wasted his life pursuing his small minded revenge and thought him petty and immature. But I did not regret reading this.

message 30: by Earl (new)

Earl Biringer This book is probably the most complete example of true Gothic Literature. These characters are not supposed to be liked - they represent evil manifest in the material world. Though their actions are driven by what appears to be love, they are estructive, not ony to themselves but to all others wiith whom they interact.

This is an absolute classic and should be must-reading for everyone.

Deborah Mitton Anita wrote: "So what did you think of this book? Did you like it? See I have come across this book a couple of times and I have even bought it but i was wondering if it is worth the read. Would you recommend it..."

Deborah Mitton I have read Wuthering Heights 3 times. Once when I was in high school ... I thought it was the best book ever
2 times - married 10 years or more and thought they were very selfish and not in true love.
3rd time as a grandmother of 9 grandkids, and though thought it was well written ...Heathcliff & Cathy should immature & destructive and not the true love story of the book. The true love story was with their offspring.

Leonore As a teacher of English Literature I can only recommend that you read this novel. In order to appreciate it properly you need to understand that there are basically two types of fiction: commercial fiction and literary fiction. Where commercial fiction has an easy plot line, suspense, simple characters and a complete ending, literary fiction is complex and explores human psychology. It leaves you thinking after you have finished the story. Wuthering Heights straddles both. You can read the book for the dramatic romance between Heathcliff and Catherine, or you can try to understand the book's context, structure, the variation in points of view, the themes and human complexities that come with class, culture and convention. For me the novel works at both levels.

Jennifer I'm glad I read it, but I did not enjoy it.

The writing and the story are AMAZING, but the characters are dreadful. She did a great job at focusing on the evils of humanity.

message 35: by [deleted user] (last edited Apr 08, 2013 01:52PM) (new)

I think you should read it! I love this book,so my opinion is not neutral, but it is a classic, and so worth reading for your book knowledge.

Clarissa I just hate that Heathcliff came back with a black hole in his heart.

Sweet Booklover I definitely loved this book, although it had a few flaws but they were overtaken by its attractive storyline.
I would unquestionably recommend this book for you.

message 38: by Gita (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gita Reddy This is a book of extremes; extreme passion, loyalty, love, hate and even extreme infatuation. No wonder it evokes extreme reactions.
In my opinion, a 'must read'

Alifya it is one of my favorite books and i absolutely love it . so my opinion may be a little biased. But is definitely a must read. the dialogs are great and the characters are very intresting along with that the narration is very engaging.

This is my favorite novel i've read so far. It's got so much depth. It haunts me in a good way. (:

message 41: by Krismari (last edited May 17, 2013 02:57AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Krismari i loved the book it was worth reading it
the plot, the characters, the way it was written and the ending was not something that nowadays writers write.

message 42: by Anna (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anna I think it's really worth reading, I absolutely loved this book. Everything about it is really good, the plot, the characters, the ending. The writing style is really good. Although it might not be an amusing book with a happy ending, it's really good and different from most books nowadays.

message 43: by Jennifer (last edited May 17, 2013 01:04PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jennifer I absolutely love this book! It is one of my all-time favorites. I read it in JH back in the '80's, have reread it many times and loved it over again. I fell for Heathcliff and just adored Cathy. Just a wonderful historical fiction love story that will never be forgotten once you read it.

message 44: by Mary (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mary Deborah wrote: "Heathcliff & Cathy should immature & destructive and not the true love story of the book. The true love story was with their offspring. ."

Exactly! Emily Bronte demonstrates the difference between immature, self-destructive "love" in Cathy and Heathcliff and the more mature love of Catherine Linton and Hareton.

message 45: by Julia (last edited May 17, 2013 12:52PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Julia I was around...14-15 when I first read it, and I loved it. I have to confess,I never really liked classics and it was actually Bella Swan who inspired me to read it 'cause she was always swooning about the book.
I really enjoyed how much thrilling and gripping it was.

When I was younger, I always thought that something which is hallmarked "classic" is boring and uninteresting. Emily Bronte proved me wrong!

Adite I hated it. I just didn't get what the big deal about this "classic" is. It's NOT a love story in any sense of the term. All the characters are self-obsessed and self-destructive. What's worse is that Heathcliff's character is one of the worst instances of racial profiling that I have ever come across.

Somerandom Adite wrote: "I hated it. I just didn't get what the big deal about this "classic" is. It's NOT a love story in any sense of the term. All the characters are self-obsessed and self-destructive. What's worse is ..."

Whether or not this book is a romance novel is debatable. The characters are awful but that's kind of the point. The narrator admits to focusing on their bad qualities so you have to decide how bad they really are for youraelf since the narrator is unreliable. This book examines human psychology more than romance. As to Heathcliff well this book was written a century ago, you can't exactly expect a modern understanding of something like that. Perhaps it was even intentional and reflected The Narrator's thoughts on Heathcliff.

Anita Anderson I LOVED it!!! I saw the love story, however, it is not the love story one would expect. This is definitely not "till death do us part" love story, since it is going on long after Chaterine's death. Very dark plot, intense, realistic in the sense of home abuse.

Judith McLaughlin I think this book is amazing...and the characters are dark and selfish and needy and imperfect and cross that thin line between love and hate over and over again. And the language!?! Just had to read slowly and soak every word in. I think it is a love story, but not a romance. And not happy. But oh so worth it as a study of the human condition.

Sofia my literature teacher told me once it was a lovely novel, so i read it...i have to say it was a little confusing at first..there were so many characters that i had to read the same part twice!!..
it also was a little difficult for me to read it as i was used to read the typical love story. this story was unexpected for me but i really liked it! i would recommend it to anyone who wants to read a good novel
