seriously , did anyone really enjoy this ?
Seriously, yes I certainly did and so have countless generations of readers. Odd title to single out for scorn.
I enjoyed it as well! The Rubaiyat is a brief, evocative ode to wine and living life, in full awareness of its temporal nature, a celebration of pleasure and laughing defiance of death. It's unfortunate the Muslim world largely took your advice and forgot this work-- a little appreciation for alcohol or other vices might have been beneficial, in the long run.
It shouldn't be required reading, necessarily, but it's held up well over the centuries. Maybe you read a particularly wooden translation?

Two stars means "its okay" in the Goodreads world. I tagged it that way because it is fine for what it is. Not something one reads frequently; but one should read at least once and become informed by. Its not high in my ranks because I simply haven't thought about it in many years.
It should mean ,do not bother with it ; and nothing else.Not high in ranks ,because I haven't thought about it (What a smart sounding thing to say).
If you read the Peter Avery & John Heath-Stubbs translation, all you who dislike the book, it should change your mind.

What's not to like? Its been stuck in my memory for forty years...
What not to like? Khayyam has a powerful and provocative language, wrote many beautiful poems about love and what really matters in life, and had the guts to write things openly many centuries ago. For info: The Turkish translation by Sabahattin Eyuboglu is really good.
I enjoyed it.There's several English translations in circulation that may have influenced the eventual outcome. I've read two of them to see how it happened.
This book deals with the biggest mysteries of life - wine, god, women. If you don't see the beauty in that then you are not living.
That's why they make red cars and blue cars. You're entitled to your opinion, and so is everyone else. If a person dislikes a book I love, it doesn't take away my pleasure. The reverse is true; if they like a book I think is awful, it doesn't affect me.An opinion is just that, a reaction to an idea or object. They are subject to change over time.
If it's not for you, so be it. But one person's opinion is not the final word. On anything.
