Kendra (book_lover_too) | 337 comments I am annoyed that m/m romance is going mainstream by an author that I have never read before. And that I would have to buy a crap-ton of books in order to read it and not be lost on the back story.

Excited about mainstream, wish I was more familiar with the author's work.

Lover At Last by J.R. Ward is the book I am refering to.

Hi Kendra!
Just to give you a bit of back history, the storyline of Qhuinn and Blay is one I and many others have been anxiously awaiting since 2008. This particular book is def. a "for the hardcore fans" story. Unless you've read the blurbs here on Goodreads and it strikes your fancy then yeah, give the series a try. As for me, the BDB is one of my favorite het vampire Series and honestly, the Qhuinn and Blay storyline sparked my interest in the mm genre (Joey W. Hill solidified it with her Vampire Queen series).

I've read a ton of mm novels since 2008 and so I'm curious to see how Ward's mainly non m/m reader fan base embraces a BDB book that doesn't feature a female love interest. To be honest because the storyline was a long time coming, building up book after book I think at this point no one really cares that this is a story of a same sex couple. All everyone cares about is finally reading about two people who've been in love since forever finally get together. If you are not already emotionally invested into this couple already then this book may not appeal to you. I also think the Warden is very cognizant of her audience and therefore may tone down the language while keeping the sex scenes intense and filled with pent up longing which will play well to her fan base but not necessarily well to avid m/ m readers who are acclimated to everything imaginable when it comes down getting dirty. If you like het books and don't mind vamps then give the BDB a try. Like most series some books in the series are a hit or miss. Btw, don't be surprised if the Warden has shepherded in a slew of new m/m devotees ; ) I'm hoping this book will help convince a lot of my friends to FINALLY give m/m a try!

Ije the Devourer of Books | 14524 comments I am annoyed that I am three books behind in the bdb series and now have to play catch up like a bad student.

Oh believe me, I was all over that the moment I saw his ad. I sent Mr. Middle Age Hottie a not-too-fawning-I-hope message and even unlocked all my naughty, private, "rudie" pictures for him to see. It's been at least ten minutes and generally the way these things work, if they don't reply within a few minutes, or just return a quick, curt, "thanks", then it's not happening.

I'm mildly disappointed that this hookup is not happening. NEXT!

Ajax1978 It's ticking me off that one of the books I'm reading isn't listed on GR. How am I supposed to post a pithy review?

Mrs.Crazy (nico di angelo) | 6 comments I'm mad because one of my gr friends just came back from being gone, and I didn't get to talk to him. I also dislike time differences. And the fact that my sibs are home because school got canceled! -.-" poor me.

message 1322: by [deleted user] (new)

I'd P.O'd that Ajax1978 hasn't looked at my profile and note that I'm a Goordreads Libraian and can add his book to the GR book database if he gives me the: title; author; ISBN or ASIN; Year published (and date of known); Number of pages if known; Format (hardcover, paperback, ebook, kindle); and description (blurb),

message 1323: by Anil (new)

Anil (loykalina) | 303 comments I am annoyed that the book Ajax is reading is not listed on GR.

Ajax, you can add the book to GR.;-) I had a different version of a book listed on this site, then I asked the Librarians to merge it with other versions.

Ije the Devourer of Books | 14524 comments Ajax1978 wrote: "It's ticking me off that one of the books I'm reading isn't listed on GR. How am I supposed to post a pithy review?"

You can create a book entry yourself. If you search for it on GR and nothing comes up there should be an option on the page to create the book yourself. You can then get the books blurb, ISBN number etc etc from Amazon and use it for the entry. You can also create a cover for the book by downloading the picture of the cover from Amazon and uploading it on the GR entry page and voila!!! You can then write your review. I have done this quite a few times for graphic novels because so many authors dont load their books up on GR.

Oh Aves this is so sad. I only just heard it now from you, but my colleague here at work says he died last week. Chinua Achebe is some one whose writing helped me make sense of my own culture and people. I was born and grew up here in the UK but went to Nigeria for my high school and first degree. His books helped me grapple with the culture and the country. He was one of Nigeria's great minds and he will be missed.

Jerry I am complaining that my choir does not get the Sunday after Easter off. Instead we have to sing that sunday becuase Alan Boesak will preach and they are expecting overflow crowds. He is former president of World Aliance of Reformed Churches, a leading figure in South Aftica's anti-apartheid movement and outspoken leader for acceptance of gays and lesbians in the church for both clergy and marriage.
We are singing N'Kosi Sikelili Africa among other pieces.

I am P.O.'d that we don't even HAVE a football coach that I could be loyal to over Coach Fitzgerald (he is pretty dang cute though). Sometimes I wonder what madness dragged me from sunny Southern California to go to Marquette when (a) it was so expensive that I will still be paying off my loans when my oldest starts college and (b) I'm not even Catholic!

I did meet my husband there though so I can't complain too much...only every other Tuesday and bank holidays :-)

I am annoyed the Goodreads forbids downloading, copying or in any other way using the blurb, cover or any other data from Amazon because they had a big to do with Amazon and now Amazon won't let GR use Amazon info or images.

I am annoyed that Goodreads and Amazon are not co - operating. How silly of them when they could look at how to make money in a way that is mutually beneficial for both of them.

When creating new books in Goodreads I use the info from Amazon by cutting and pasting the blurb from Amazon into the new book profile on GR. Then I download the image from Amazon onto my PC as a Jpeg and then upload it to Goodreads :) or you can create the book without a cover.

Ije the Devourer of Books | 14524 comments Preston wrote: "Ijeoma wrote: "You can then get the books blurb, ISBN number etc etc from Amazon and use it for the entry. You can also create a cover for the book by downloading the picture of the cover from Amaz..."

Or if the author has a website you can get the info from there or any other library/book seller website. Generally it is all the same info so it is a pity that GR and Amazon cant come to some kind of compromise and work out their issues.

Ije the Devourer of Books | 14524 comments I hate to hear that Anil and Helle havent had a good rest. I hope both of you get to feel better as the day progresses.

What you are doing is strictly prohibited by Goodreads so you might want to delete you posts where you admit you are using Amazon's and other booksellers' images, blurbs and other data because it's a no-no.

Using data & cover art from any bookseller is forbidden and can get you in trouble here on GR for doing what you've been doing.

"This is posted in the Goodreads Librarians Group

Adding New Books > Reminders to librarians fulfilling add-book requests

1) Please only add books if you are familiar with all the relevant sections of the Librarian Manual.

2) Covers and information from Amazon and other booksellers MAY NOT be used. Shelfari and LibraryThing are also on the do-not-use list.

3) An ebook with an ASIN is a Kindle edition. Please choose the format "Kindle edition", not "ebook".

This topic has been frozen by the moderator. No new comments can be posted."

I'm not the GR police so I don't care but don't let a GR employee or zealot librarian know what you have doing. I know it doesn't seem sensible but these are the rules. Try to get cover art and blurbs from Blogs, book reviews or directly from the author.

message 1347: by Anil (new)

Anil (loykalina) | 303 comments I hate that Amazon is the party that creates the problem, because it bought a website similar to GR. Thus, GR has become a rival rather than a collaborate.

Ije the Devourer of Books | 14524 comments Well I must complain because I would hate for people to think that I sit huddled at my PC all day sneakily loading blurbs and covers from Amazon onto Goodreads. Sacrilege!!!

:-0

Much as I simply adore Goodreads (let me say that again) I simply adooooooooore Goodreads and consume books like Peanutbutter and Bacon muffins I do have a life, far too many different jobs and roles, and a lot of work. (Superwoman that I am)

I have used Amazon in the past but probably before restrictions were in place because I wasnt aware that such restrictions exist. No one told me :^)

Goodreads allows people who are not librarians to create books and so I expect them to take the responsibility to inform people about the rules or restrict book creating to librarians. I think they may well have done so since Preston has mentioned it in his post.

Therefore there is no need for any one to panic. I now stand corrected and informed (I have seen the light and repent of my error in sackcloth and ashes) and Preston now knows how not to create a book on Goodreads.

Yay :)
