Complaining, because this mean big time drought and no real greenery and little water in the rivers from runoff in the spring. Also, fires in the summer ...

Mind you, I don't miss driving in snow. Not by a long shot. >shudders<

message 7154: by Rick (new)

Rick | 15794 comments I don't miss driving in the snow either, but that's because my car isn't working right now. Good thing I work within walking distance of home.

Rick | 15794 comments I'm peeved! I'm steamed! I'm infuriated!

You see there's a movie I've wanted to see for years, but haven't gotten around to seeing it. Edge of Seventeen (1998) (here's a link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0138414/ ). It was filmed in Sandusky Ohio, near where I live and is a gay male coming-of-age themed film. I found that a library in the inter-library loan system of Ohio has a copy and I requested it. What came was The Edge of Seventeen (2016) (here's a link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1878870/?... ).
Now, I did watch it. It wasn't bad and had some good moments. But it's a straight female coming-of-age themed film. Clearly NOT the same film.
Like I said: very frustrating. Clearly there's a fault in the ordering system.

I'm trying to order it again.

message 7156: by Lori S. (new)

Lori S. (fuzzipueo) | 2809 comments Is it the same basic plot, etc.? If so, how confusing!

message 7157: by Rick (new)

Rick | 15794 comments Well, I haven't see the one from 1998 yet, but I seriously doubt they have the same basic plot other than the coming-of-age theme.

message 7158: by Lori S. (new)

Lori S. (fuzzipueo) | 2809 comments Here's another difference: the 2016 movies is titled THE Edge of Seventeen, while the 1998 movie is EDGE of Seventeen.

Rick | 15794 comments Lori S. wrote: "Here's another difference: the 2016 movies is titled THE Edge of Seventeen, while the 1998 movie is EDGE of Seventeen."

Yes, but they're both in the system as Edge of Seventeen. That certainly doesn't help. Anyway, I'm determened to get this fixed. I just have to figure our who it is THE right person to get a hold of. ;)

Rick | 15794 comments Weather update: Today in the Great Black Swamp of Northwest Ohio it is in the mid 50s (Fahrenheit) and tomorrow we're being told a blizzard is supposed to hit us with potentially 8-10 inches of snow. Gotta love it! :D

message 7161: by Rick (new)

Rick | 15794 comments Because of the threat of the potential blizzard, all my plans for the evening (including FINALLY celebrating my birthday with delicious Thai food from Bangkok Kitchen). Bummer. Then I got an early morning call from my supervisor at the Law Library saying she was taking a sick day (undoubtedly because of the imminent blizzard) and that I'd need to cover the entire day for her. Well, great, my late afternoon plans had been canceled anyway so I might as well make some extra money.
Then what happens ... the pending blizzard is forecast to now be headed south of us and all the doom and gloom that everyone was predicting is now amounting to ... nothing but a little snow.
So, of course, I get a call that we're back on for Thai food - after I've already emailed everyone and told them the plans got canceled. AND since I now have to work later than originally planned, I wouldn't be able to go anyway.

Never fails ...

Rick | 15794 comments So, I ordered a new pair of winter boots as the ones I'm currently using have started splitting at the seems. The new pair was supposed to arrive yesterday. But I got an email stating that the UPS driver had decided that the package was undeliverable. Why? According to the driver, the address on the package was not valid. Now, I've lived at this address for YEARS and have had UPS deliver lots of packages there. Even earlier this week & last month. So what happens? My new winter boots which were supposed to arrive just in time for the blizzard of 2018 didn't arrive yesterday - of course neither did the blizzard of 2018, so who cares right.

Hopefully the boots will be there when I get home tonight. Not holding my breath though.

I've had that happen with FedEx deliveries here at work, to offices FedEx has been delivering to for years. I, personally, think it's shear laziness on the part of the delivery person.

I completely agree. But it's more fun to blame amazon since they're the ones who emailed me saying the package didn't get delivered yesterday because it is: "undeliverable." Stupid, stupid, amazon.

Rick | 15794 comments These are films that have held onto the top boxoffice spot for 5 consecutive weekends since 1987:
Fatal Attraction 1987
Stake Out 1987
The Secret of My Success 1987
Rain Man 1988/1989
Look Who’s Talking 1989
Home Alone 1990
The Silence of the Lambs 1991
Wayne’s World 1992
The Fugitive 1993
Titanic 1997/1998
The Sixth Sense 1999
Avatar 2009/2010

As you can see it's been getting harder and harder for a film to do this since the late 1980s.

Black Panther just did it. And it's certainly a possibility that Avengers: Infinity War might do it as well as in the first six hours (6 hours) of pre-release ticket sales it became the highest grossing superhero film for pre-ticket sales passing Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and, that's right, Black Panther.

Is this a complaint? Yes, because now "Hollywood" is bemoaning the fact they're losing money since Black Panther isn't "stepping down" and letting another film take the spotlight. Hey, if you can't see the forest for the trees get out of the business. Your all-white, all-male monopoly on the movie industry is crumbling. Now, where's my Alpha Flight movie with Northstar?

Rick | 15794 comments ARGH! I'm looking independent confirmation - but it looks like the offer from Disney to acquire the films rights to a lot of 20th Century properties (including Fantastic Four and X-Men) has gone through. So a new Fantastic Four film set firmly in the Marvel Cinematic Universe might not be too far away. :D

But I'm complaining because it didn't happen BEFORE Infinity War. ;P

I found these articles - seems a little confusing but there could be a bidding war in the making:
Fox to Press on with Disney Merger ...
What a Comcast Disney Duel over Fox Means for You and Marvel's Universe

Rick | 15794 comments Lori S. wrote: "I found these articles - seems a little confusing but there could be a bidding war in the making: ..."

Thanks, I'd heard about the Comcast bid, but I tend to agree that the original buy out by Disney would have more long term benefits for the companies. But investors are always looking at short term gains over long term benefits. Still the issue of having to pay higher taxes might sway the deal back toward Disney. But in any case, clearly the deal has not been finalized yet.

You're absolutely right, Lori. As much as I've liked some of the other superhero movies, this one pretty much tops them all just because of the humor, and the breaking-the-fourth-wall stuff. I haven't seen Black Panther yet, so I don't have a point of comparison there. And I'm not going to bother with the latest Avengers, since it's only half a movie and cliffhangers really, really, really! annoy me. If the second half in 2019 gets good reviews, I'll probably DVD this one, and then see the other at a theatre.

Just more of my USD .02.

Eric

I did actually pick up a used copy of Deadpool really dirt cheap so I'll give it another try. A lot of people really like this film, but I just can't stand Reynolds (rather like Dwayne Johnson... he's another one that every time I see him on screen I get the heebie, jeebies). I like the breaking-the-4th-wall troupe, I think John Byrne's run on She-Hulk was one of the most entertaining and inventive runs he did. Deadpool just strikes me as being a potty mouth for the sake of the shock value. But I don't read his appearances regularly, so I'm certainly no expert.

I can understand your frustration with waiting for a conclusion, but I love cliffhangers - as long as I'm informed going in that this is part of a larger story. And the tapestry-like nature of the MCU films is what appeals to me. It's an ongoing struggle that never really has a clear winner or loser - just like life, things change and evolve - but there are differences of opinion and perspective that need to be mediated.

And I LOVED Black Panther. But then I've been a fan of the character for decades, since his story arc Panther's Rage which ran in the pages of Jungle Action in the 1970s.

Lori S. (fuzzipueo) | 2809 comments If done right, spinach can be quite good and I am no fan of cooked spinach. I had a spinach and feta cheese quiche yesterday that was very tasty. There's a place across the street which makes a dish called Sabizi, which is cooked spinach over a bed of rice and peas, topped off with fried tofu in a mix of spices that, with the tzatziki sauce, is very good. Spinach and artichoke dip is a treat too. Fresh spinach is a salad is the best though.
