I feel really glad that at least in this group there's some sort of policy on slurs in place. At that other group it lists off racism, sexism, homophobia, etc as prejudices not allowed but transphobia isn't listed. I mean I don't think these people mean it maliciously because they're referring to people casually and not in attacks but its really hard to see a slur thrown around in more violent ways at times used so carelessly

I do this all the time and yeah, it hurts (usually after a moment of me going: huh?). Keep it clean and as dry as you reasonably can. Use some Neosporin or something similar if you've got it and keep a bandage on it for a couple of days. Hope your day gets better Wren. :)

Naw not all of us are awesome. It's our wondrous Lori who is wise, clever, kind and caring.

Even though I'm not gifted like Lori, I do care about you Wren and think of you fondly. (My boyfriend just told me I was awesome but he's a bad judge of character, after all he chose to be with me.)

Thank you for the wonderful complaint. We appreciate both you and your contributions to the Complaint Department

Lori S. (fuzzipueo) | 2809 comments I want to complain about my old school system (APS), the same one which thinks Cheddar cheese should be on pizza (ew), that they have initiated a Transgender Students Protections with the help of the NM Safe Schools Initiative & EQNM (Equality New Mexico)! :)
EQNM, NM SAFE SCHOOLS INITIATIVE APPLAUD APS TRANSGENDER STUDENT PROTECTIONS dated March 8, 2016.

One step at a time, true, but one step soon becomes two, etc.

Oh that is wonderful a sad moment in New Mexico history! Think of all those safe students who will be free to be the person there were born to be. How ever will they cope with having their dignity respected?

With the transgendered students being addressed according to their identity and bullying protection being attended to this reduces their opportunity to complain which is a harsh outcome.

I demand that these students have the right to complain despite the fact that the new policy is a step in the right direction.

Seriously, the fact that the schools recognize that this doesn't solve all the problems of transgendered students in the educational environment but is only a first move in an ongoing effort is an important factor.

Thanks for sharing the great news with us.

PS: How could such an enlightened policy come from a school district which serves cheddar cheese pizza? We must continue to fight throughout the nation for the rights of mozzarella eating students everywhere.

Wren (wrenreaders) | 339 comments I think its great that you're all so trans positive here. Just thought I'd mention that its not "a transgendered person/students/friend" but "a transgender person/etc". Most trans people find the "ed" offensive (many say because it implies action "I walked" for example).

Preston | 20148 comments Wren (He or They) wrote: "Most trans people find the "ed" offensive (many say because it implies action "I walked" for example). "

Thanks Wren. You are always so helpful and we appreciate your assistance here in the group.

It's the same for people with disabilities. No "-ed" People are not disabled. Cars or bad plumbing may be disabled but not a person. A person has a disability.

To say that a guy or woman is disabled makes it sound like they are car waiting on the side of the highway to be hauled away by a tow truck.

Most times there is no need to refer to the disability when referring to the person. If business, industry and government all worked together to make buildings and equipment accessible using reasonable accommodations like ramps, accessible bathrooms, adaptive equipment (such as for computers), braille text, sign language interpreters, and other architectural and device modifications then there would be no need to refer to a disability in most cases.

The worst offense I ever saw in a 'review' here on Goodreads was an ignorant woman reader who wrote "...the main character was a handicap." Really? What was he? A man the size of a NFL football player who was blocking the door? That would be a handicap to just about anyone trying to get through the door. But writing "The main character was a handicap." is both an insult and a non sequitur. If it is necessary to say, the way to say it is the main character was a person with a disability.

Worse than this review's reference to a human being as a handicap was that she kept referring to her "pity" for the person. The person I pity was this ignoramus. What a pity she's so unaware of anything outside of her own pitiful life.

I'm very sorry Bethany. I am a pet lover and understand that your cat was part of your family. He was family for 17 years and it must be awful knowing you won't see him again. To me it is no different than a family member dying.

My most sincere and deep condolences on your loss.

Roger Kean | 17278 comments I'm not complaining of the irony of suggesting to fellow G/G Group member John Wittier Treat that he should submit his book The Rise and Fall of the Yellow House for the Lambda Awards and then he wins a short-listing in General Gay Fiction when Harry's Great Trek doesn't (indeed, I fervently hope he wins), but I am complaining that Lambda kicked out titles in the General Gay Fiction in favor of adding books that should have been competing in other categories. That does need some explaining.

My fellow G/Ger scavola explained it best:

"Grrr . . . I'm happy that The Rise and Fall of the Yellow House by author-member John Whittier Treat was nominated but I'm very, very disappointed that they didn't nominate Harry's Great Trek.

Let me get picky for a minute:

The Early Stories of Truman Capote is a collection of short stories / anthology and they have a separate category for that.

Immaculate Blue is listed as nonfiction and they have a separate category for that.

Still Life, Breathing Lessons, and A God In Pink are debut novels and they have a separate category for that.

Still Life is also listed as a coming of age story, about a 17 year old, and they have a separate category for that.

A Poet of the Invisible World isn't even listed as gay fiction, but Metaphysical & Visionary and Religious & Inspirational.

Not belittling these books but Lambda for making poor choices in their selctions that narrowed the field of gay fiction.

Wren (wrenreaders) | 339 comments I want to complain that I am absolutely dreading taking the bandage off my finger tomorrow, its probably gonna be nasty

also i have writers block yet an unbearable urge to write?

i have something good i really wanna share though. My short story on wattpad reached #785 today in the short story category, and there are thousands of stories on wattpad yet mine made it to the ranks for the first time! One good thing, amongst a sea of complaints :P

i hope its ok to write good things as well. i just felt really happy and wanted to share

Roger Kean | 17278 comments Lori S. wrote: "That inhales to the extreme, Roger. Why would they do such a thing?"

Don Casto, a co-moderator of the G/G Group answered that it's like the Grammy Awards — many categories any of which could win best album of the year. That sounds fair enough considering some of the categories, but to have a special Debut Novel category and then put debut novels in Best Gay Fiction seems pointless, and obviously restricts the range of titles from those submitting non-debut fiction.

Bethany Ebert (heart77) | 117 comments Congratulations, Wren!

I'd like to complain about my refrigerator. I ran out of butter today, but I don't have enough money for more butter until I get my tax returns. Woe is me.

I'm really starting to regret spending all that money on hair dye. I dyed my hair pink about two weeks ago, and then when it faded I dyed it a second time. Then I got sick of having pink hair so I shaved my head.

I was doing really well on curbing my impulsive behaviors, but it seems like I need to work harder on it.

Wooo

Preston | 20148 comments Bethany wrote: "I was doing really well on curbing my impulsive behaviors, but it seems like I need to work harder on it...."

But we love your impulsive behaviors!

Next time buy butter instead of hair dye then use the butter as a hat. Then when you run out of butter all you'd need is to take off your hat.

Another helpful homemaking and beneficent beauty tip from the Complaint Department. :)

HUGS!!!

Preston | 20148 comments Fellow members of the the Complaint Department we cannot miss this opportunity to wish all the luck and pluck that comes with being Irish and a reader.

I'm complaining that I don't know if complaints are suspended on this day of parades and parties and reflection on all it means to be Irish… though regardless of race, religion, national origin or any other distinction where I live in Albany, New York and for so many people all throughout the USA* everybody is Irish, a leprechaun or shamrockettes on St. Patrick's day.

Best wishes on this special day and always!

Preston | 20148 comments North Carolina Prevents Local Governments From Granting Human Rights to people who are LGBT sexual minorities.

With the stupid, lying, bigoted clown Trump actually be taken seriously and the evil homophobes in North Carolina passing this law, I am ashamed of being an American in 2016. I only hope Clinton wins and the courts reverse this vile NC law. Here is the news reported by NPR —Preston

The North Carolina state Legislature has passed a law blocking local governments from passing anti-discrimination rules to grant protections to gay and transgender people.

The law comes a month after the city of Charlotte passed a measure protecting gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people from being discriminated against by businesses.

That measure was set to go into effect on April 1.

The state's General Assembly wasn't due to meet until late April, but it scheduled a special session — for the first time in 35 years, member station WUNC reports — on Wednesday to respond to the Charlotte measure before it went into effect.

Over the course of 12 hours, the state legislators introduced, debated and passed the bill, and Gov. Pat McCrory signed it into law.
