Lori S. (fuzzipueo) | 2809 comments Actually, it's the BBC Controller's fault. She's under misapprehension that the UK is about to flooded with "national" moments, what with the Olympics and the Euros and all. Most of UK folks who've responded to this idea seem to think she's very wrong. What do our UK residents think?

message 6653: by Monika (new)

Monika | 3337 comments Umm, what? I don't know if I got it right. They postponed it because of the Olympics and Euro?

Roger Kean | 17278 comments The Beeb likes to keep its schedules clear of long-term money spinners when there are short-term money-makers on the horizon in order to capitalize on both in an optimal way.

I think there may also be a sense that its first-view audience (Britain) is slowing in its affection for the good Doctor. Perhaps a surfeit, time to give it a sabbatical?

Roger, don't you dare try to "logic" their way out of this. This is all about what they perceive as flagging viewer ratings and crass American imported conspicuous consumerism. Profit! Profit! Profit! Has destroyed the US economy. Destroyed the US political landscape. And it's now wrecking havoc with Doctor Who. I'm telling you it's the end of days! The apocalypse is upon us! Doctor Who is off the air! clearly this unprecedented occurrence is the harbinger of doom and death and higher taxes! Sarah Palin has endorsed Donald Trump! It's all connected! The Republicans poisoned the citizens of Flint, Michigan for cheaper water bills and more profit for the wealthiest Americans! They're scamming the British citizens into thinking a hiatus is good for ratings and thus saving money on production for an entire year! It's evil. "Evil, pure and simple, from the eighth dimension!" Buckaroo Banzai was right! It is an invasion of Grover's Mill, New Jersey!

...

Ah, wait, what...

Solve the Dr. Who problem in your Another England series (i.e. The Rake, the Rogue and the Roué Another England #1). Dr. Who production may be messed up in this current England people are living but in another England it could be flourishing and new episodes could be shared with us. As you said in your post 6682, "think about it…"

I am poor and can't afford new ones but I'm trying to see if I can get financial aid for them. I have some contact lenses which I will use for now but they are blurry, move a lot, hurt to put in, irritate my eyes and are just generally uncomfortable. Well that sucks big time.
When your eyes aren't used to wearing contacts they will be irritated by them. That's rather normal. I started wearing contacts five/six years ago and still remember that the first week I felt like constantly having sand under my eyelids :/

message 6665: by Roger (new)

Roger Kean | 17278 comments It does, I started wearing hard contacts 46 years ago because I had to (Keracotonus) and the first week was a mix of hell because they felt so weird and uncomfortable, and heaven because I'd never seen things so sharp and clear for years (spectacles were no longer doing the job).

No problem, I'd be inconsolable and beyond panic without my glasses. Everything beyond about a foot to a foot to 18 inches away from is a complete blur without my glasses. If I take my glasses off and set them in an odd place, and forget where they are I can never find them again. It's horrible to be looking for something and not be able to see to find it. Frustrating beyond frustration, it's crippling panic time. So I have like five places in my house where I set my glasses. That's it. No matter how tired I am, or how drunk or how passionate or whatever, if my glasses come off a wee part of my brain goes off "Spot 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5! Nowhere else you idiot!"

message 6667: by Lori S. (new)

I used to wear contacts on a regular basis but then I got tired of them. Akways felt uncomfortable, sometimes even hurt. I don't mind them once in a while but for school? Early in the morning? No.

message 6670: by Monika (new)

Monika | 3337 comments Hmm, it shouldn't matter when you put them on but for how long you wear them. There are different types of contacts and you may try couple before you decide which are best for you. I personally always use acuvue oasys from johnson&johnson because they are very soft and stay moist for a very long time.

Then they snubbed me in class later when I asked to see their notes because I missed something although all last semester I helped them in this one class where they basically took all my answers for the in-class assignments.

Preston | 20148 comments I want to complain about the lack of diversity at the Oscars but Sir Ian McKellen protested with words far better than any I could come up with. First he said he fully sympathized with the Black actors' protests then he said,
"It's not only black people who've been disregarded by the film industry, it used to be women, it's certainly gay people to this day. And these are all legitimate complaints, and the Oscars are the focus of those complaints at the moment." he added."
While Sir Ian has been nominated twice for the award – first as gay director James Whale in Gods and Monsters (1999) and later as Gandalf in Lord of the Rings (2002) – he talked about how while two straight men received Oscars for portraying gay men, no openly gay person has ever received the award.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has long been a bastion of conservative white men making tons money. They represent some of most hypocritical people in American society and have long been bankrolling the illusion that "Hollywood" is a cesspool of vice, sin and corruption. It is corporate executives who are at the heart of the racist, sexist, misogynistic, heterosexist, homophobic, xenophobic, transphobic motion picture industry and those executives, like all good conservatives, pass the blame on to the very people they exploit in order to make their ludicrous piles of money. I long ago stopped having any interest in the Oscars for these very reasons. When Tom Hanks won an Oscar for the oh-so-challenging-and-difficult-role of playing a gay man, while thousands of gay & lesbian actors play straight characters every day and are ignored for the very things Hanks was recognized for ... Yeah, "the Academy" and the Oscars are a bunch of self-congratulating asshats and the whole thing is a load of manure. This is LONG overdue.

message 6678: by Roger (new)

Roger Kean | 17278 comments There is also the consideration of the dead members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, who still vote on a regular basis… or have they cleaned up that particular necrophiliac scam?

The truth is out there, if you haven't read the inside story exposed in Stealing Arthur by Joel Perry… he's a man who knows.

Haha, I know. It's such a scam and I'm waiting for it xDD We've got such a great fun listening to our Eurovision commentator. "To those of you who watch Eurovision for the first time - country X gives 12points to country Y every year" a minute later "oh, lookie here, I was right again" and apart from that he explains actual political relations between countries etc. His comments give wholly different perspective. Seriously it's like stand up comedy with him.

Huh, well I suppose I had some interesting or even quite funny lectures but they were definitely a rarity. No one cared about entertaining students. Common knowledge here is that people attend lectures to learn something and if they don't like the way it is done they don't have to come back, no one will stop them.

And when it comes to Eurovision, it is basically a song contest. Or more like a music show if we skip the voting, which is one big scam ;) however, for me there is one big plus to it - all contestants really sing live. No lip-sync there and there is no redoing if they screwed something.
If you have some free five hours ;)) you may watch last year's final on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQETF...

message 6688: by Roger (last edited Jan 30, 2016 12:24AM) (new)

Roger Kean | 17278 comments No, different from talent(less) TV reality contests. Each participating country (including some from Europe itself :-) choses its hopefully winning song in a variety of ways. This year, for instance, Britain is going back to the "audience choice" system of voting between a number of new songs, winner to go to the contest held in Stockholm this year (because, astonishingly, Sweden's entry won last year's contest.

Some entries really are worthwhile songs, of particular interest, perhaps, Austria's 2014 winner by drag-queen Concita Wurst

or the real thing:

Wiki has a complete listing of winners back to the 1956 start:

Monika | 3337 comments Roger wrote: "This year, for instance, Britain is going back to the "audience choice" system of voting..."
Yeah, here too, and I'm afraid it will be a total disaster and if most countries do that then even more really terrible singers and songs will enter the final. People tend to choose songs they like and don't pay attention to the fact that the mediocre singer really can't sing live well.
Well, Mans Zelmerlow is rather good, but there were far better singers than him last year. However, taking into consideration that by the end it was his song vs Russian one about hearing voices O.o' I'm happy that he won.
And while Concita's song was as you wrote worthwhile it was Icelandic ridiculously positive one that got stuck in my head the longest :))

Rick | 15794 comments So this has been going on FAR longer than that limp-wrested, weak-kneed, wannabe American Idol(altry). Typical American hypocrisy and historical rewriting to take something from somewhere else, repackage it, and sell it ASIC made from whole clothe. Bah.

As for Concita Wurst? That beard is awesome! Great song too, perfect for a James Bond theme (or maybe that should be Jane Bond). As usual I then started picking other things on YouTube and found some teenage boy from somewhere in eastern Europe (typical American I can only understand English) who did the same song, very well too. Then I found Alekander Rybek (sp?) and his song Fairytale and knew I'd end spending e whole day at this if I didn't stop. Thanks for the new addiction! Like I needed something to replace Glee! :(

How dare you complain that the Eurovision Song Contest is a waste of time. It brings together all the peoples of Europe (and half the rest of the world) in a beautiful love-fest. Besides in immigration-crisis-ridden Europe it's now the only time people get to cross borders again…

No one other than a Google-paid lawyer (or maybe an Apple-paid lawyer or an Amazon-paid lawyer) understands more than a few words of the terms & conditions.

There was a move some years ago in Europe (and I believe in the US) to force companies to simplify T&Cs and otherwise to render them unlawful if they were not, but that was before the likes of AMZ, Apple, Google, and Facebook became the de facto global governments.

its so confusing! Why?????? i don't understand why

message 6700: by Roger (new)

Roger Kean | 17278 comments The ultimate purpose to T&Cs is to ensure the company issuing it cannot be held responsible for virtually everything that might conceivably cause a user of said company's services to complain or sue.

For instance, buried deep inside Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing T&Cs is wording to the effect that they (Amazon/KDP) don't allow any writing that might conceivably be considered by anyone buying an eBook or even using the Look Inside feature pornographic/sexually explicit.

This doesn't prevent Amazon/KDP offering for sale just about everything under the sun (including Fifty Shades of BDSM Filth), but Amazon will, without explanation, remove from sale any Kindle book about which a purchaser, or would-be purchaser has complained about because of its content. When the author asks what exactly is wrong the only response is that the content does bot conform to Amazon's T&Cs (please read them carefully, etc. etc.)

This is the exact experience of a friend, who after several letters, emails, and registered mails only ever gets back the same response time after time. He even changed some content, the title, and his author name, but the KDP vetting process just kept kicking it out, and because to the 50–60 pages of tiny print in the T&Cs there is nothing he can do about it.

That's why T&Cs are so confusing. They are meant to be.
