Macky (mactut) I am totally peeved that Lucas keeps calling himself a dumb jock... Anyone who can come up with a word like perklumpked is soooo worthy of the honour of being crowned wordmeister extroidinaire! My perk is so lumpked its totally perklumpked. Love that word ... Annoyingly!

I'm annoyed too. That could be a violation of Rule 3: Don't criticize members or yourself. I just reworded it to suit my own purposes.

Breann wrote: " That could be a violation of Rule 3: Don't criticize members ..."

Rule three says "Nevertheless you may criticize the moderator" and besides I am as dumb as a drawer of jock straps or why else would
I be spending 7 years at NYU?

message 604: by Breann (new)

Breann Ugh. 7 years? I was so done after 5, I have no desire to go back for more. Although, in my profession I will never EVER get a substantial raise without. Which is annoying.

message 605: by Monique (new)

Monique (moniquesmusings) I would like to complain to the manufacturers of Skittles! There were not enough red ones in my jumbo "I feel sorry for myself" packet of conciliatory sweeties! Other than that I am cleansed!

JustJen "Miss Conduct" (just_jen) I'm really ticked that there are red highlighted ad links popping up in posts all over GR. So annoying!

message 607: by Macky (new)

Macky (mactut) I would like to join Monique in complaining about sweeties too. Today I bought some weird Jelly baby type things that looked like old people instead of babies. They were called jellyatrics... Swear this is true... But they were completely tasteless and non fruity. I consider this to be an ageist sweet, does it mean that the manufacturers think older people are less fruity and therefore lacking something as they mature or was it simply just a crappy bag of toffees that I wasted a pound on? I'm going to be pondering this all night, damn those Jellyatrics!

message 608: by Macky (new)

Macky (mactut) Being a more mature Woman myself I looked on it as therapy, as if I was eating my own fear of growing older - in a Freudian way - but it backfired because they tasted crappy so I had a chocolate biscuit instead!

message 609: by Aves (new)

Aves Raggiana (avesraggiana) | 200 comments I am really cheesed off, mainly at myself, at my preternatural inability to “IGNORE” friend requests. The overwhelming majority, I happily accept, but the Friend Request from “GEORGE” from several days ago, has been waiting my approval, with a big, red circled “1”, serving as a vexing reminder of his impertinence.

At length, I “Accept”ed his Friend Request, with the following short missive:

"Er, you may have sent me a friend request by mistake. Judging by our book choices, we have nothing in common; judging by your over one thousand busty, nubile, overwhelmingly female goodreads.com friends, we haven’t much in common there either because I’m a big ole raging homosexual.
I’m accepting your friend request anyway.
Happy Reading!"

Breann Bahaha!! That's hilarious. I'm annoyed at those friend requests too. If we only have Harry Potter and Twilight in common that's a no.

Gurrrl, I would stick with Rowntree Smarties if I were you. They’re the best and I first got introduced to them as a small boy in deepest, darkest Africa. We Americans think that we have the best of everything, and are the best at making anything, but not when it comes to making colour-coated chocolate candy.

M&Ms, eat your heart out!.

message 612: by Macky (new)

Macky (mactut) I'm totally and utterly sick to death and ragingly gutted that Aves was able to send such an awesomely funny reply and I'm even more PO'd that I won't be there to see their reaction.

message 613: by Monique (new)

Monique (moniquesmusings) Aves I am truly gutted that I cannot be there to see the reaction of "George" when he reads the aforementioned message, it certainly would have made my day and you can bet I would have been LMFAO!

message 614: by Macky (new)

Macky (mactut) I'm aggrieved to admit Aves that you have great taste in Candy. Smarties are and ever will be most awesome.

I am truly disgusted Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman signed on to a friend of the court brief filed with the US Supreme in of support discriminating against same sex couples by asking the court to uphold the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) which prohibits the Federal government from recognizing same-gender marriages in those states which have passed laws allowing gay marriage. Her company, Hewlett-Packard refused to join in with with hundreds of companies who today signed on to a friend of the court brief in favor of declaring DOMA to be unconstitutional.

I applaud and am grateful to Apple, Google Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft which cannot agree in anything but which all agreed to sign on a friend of the court (amicus curiae) brief in support of defeating the DOMA law which prevents legally married LGBT couples from getting the same recognition and benefits other couples have with regard to advantages from Federal programs including social programs and tax laws governing how the US treats married couples.
I also am appreciative of all the 278 companies including Disney, Intel, Oracle, Twitter, Starbucks, Citigroup, Johnson & Johnson, Adobe, Cisco, eBay, Nike and CBS Corp. who joined in the amicus curiae brief in support of Gay Marriage.

I will never buy another Hewlett-Packard product again because of its high profile failure to join it's tech giant peers in support the brief in favor of equal marriage rights and it's CEO's joining with bigoted republican senators in asking the court to continue US discrimination against same gender married couples.

message 616: by Monique (new)

Monique (moniquesmusings) Macky I too am not happy about the Jellyatrics sweeties as a friend of mine thought it would be quite humorous to purchase a packet and leave them neatly placed on my desk with note of sympathy after succumbing to falling of the treadmill an athletes injury! Totally out of order!

I am seriously disturbed that such a high profile company could be so obtuse ! I would have hoped a woman CEO would be more sympathetic in her views but obviously not so, unbelievable, it just makes me shake my head in disbelief. I second Lucas's comment on never buying anything from them again. Its great to see other big names supporting though. I yearn for the day when all couples are equal, regardless of gender. It shouldn't even BE an issue. Oh my blood boils on this whole topic.

message 619: by Breann (new)

Breann Now I'm really annoyed you're calling yourself a "dumb jock". A doctorate? Yeah, no thanks. I don't even know what I would do with a doctorate... probably the same job I'm doing with my BA because I wouldn't want to do anything else.

Breann wrote: "Now I'm really annoyed you're calling yourself a "dumb jock". A doctorate? "

Yeah well if you want to work with pro-sports teams in preventing and treating sports injuries through PT, they kinda insist you have a Doctorate in Physical Therapy.

See, I'm still a dumb jock.

Katharina | 106 comments I'm seriously irritated that I had to wake up extra early this morning (8am is the middle of the night, damn it!!) for a meeting at work, only to get here and find out that it's been postponed. Argh!!

I'm also secretly gloriously happy flabbergasted that there are other people in this universe going through the pain of PhD studies - I'm now in my 9th year of university education, folks, and let's just say, I'm not gettin' any smarter. And there's another 20 months on my hands, it seems.

To the HP thing: that sucks!! And it's freaking stupid on their side. In Europe, equal marriage rights are supported by the vast majority of people and quite a few of those make their feelings publicly known. An act like this is likely to piss off a lot of people with quite a bit of spending power on this side of the pond (as I am at the moment - although the spending power lies not with me...).

Oh, actually I have found the following saying that Meg Whitman actually signed the brief OPPOSING proposition 8 and in support of same-sex marriage. She said:

"I have come to embrace same-sex marriage after a period of careful review and reflection. (...) Marriage is the fundamental institution that unites a society. It is the single greatest contributor to the well-being of adults and children because it promotes eternal principles like commitment, fidelity and stability. It makes no difference whether the marriage is between a man and woman or a woman and woman. Marriage makes society better."

(I found that here: http://www.towleroad.com/2013/02/hewl...)

Or were you talking about something else entirely?

message 633: by Breann (new)

Breann My child should be annoyed with me, good thing she doesn't know any better. I blamed her for a loud noise and rattling in the house last night... it was a sonic boom. But, hey, I wouldn't put anything past my sneaky little 3 year old.

Breann Uhh... I'm gonna be miffed if its not true!

message 635: by [deleted user] (last edited Feb 28, 2013 08:44AM) (new)

Wired talked about the filing:

"Apple, Google, Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft are just a few of hundreds of companies that have signed on to a brief filed with the U.S. Supreme Court arguing that federal same-sex marriage restrictions hurt their businesses."

and then reported:

"...Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman, whose own company did not join many of its Silicon Valley rivals in attaching its name to today’s filing."

From news from Wired quoted above stating Hewlett-Packard did not join the filing by Apple, Microsoft, Google, etc. in favor of gay marriage and from the towleroad.com reportage you cited, it would appear republican Meg Whitman conveniently turnabout personal views are now in conflict with her anti-gay-marriage position she took while running unsuccessfully for governor and also be in conflict with her leadership as CEO of Hewllet-Packard as it regards the issue of the amicus curiae brief with the Supreme Court.

If so, we may exculpate Meg personally but decry her failure as CEO to lead Hewlett-Packard to join the other top tech companies in telling the court that DOMA is bad for business. Your support rings hollow in light of your hypocritical inaction as a corporate leader.

With towleroad.com reporting she embraces gay marriage as good for society — Mea culpa forgive me Meg you previously homophobic political loser who has now suddenly switched position to fit popular opinion Nevertheless since her management of Hewlett-Packard makes HP culpable as an obvious hold out in joining hundreds of its peers in opposing DOMA as bad for business, I still don't want to buy any more HP products.

Of course I'm not throwing out my OfficeJet Pro 3-in-1 printer until it breaks down.

Katharina | 106 comments I am very displeased that websites seem to give out very different information about this topic (that really is seriously annoying).

For instance, I found this:

http://www.bizjournals.com/austin/blo...

which is saying the opposite :)

In most articles about this topic, HP isn't mentioned, though, and I haven't found a complete list of companies signing the brief...

ETA: Alright, now I found it, and I really didn't see HP in there. Shame on them!! And shame on the websites promoting different information!
... Are there other major tech companies not on the list? So that I know what not to buy anymore? Must be quite a few unfortunately...

Dearest Goesta, I am deeply irritated that I had to pull out said blissful rug from under you and hope it is now reinstated in its rightful place. It is also my favourite spot in the world on which to stand, sleep, and eat muffins. I'll try very hard in the future not to look up facts and reports on the internet again, so as not to intervene with your joyful state of equitable indignation. I hope you and your rug are now well and happy.

message 638: by Kendra (new)

Kendra (book_lover_too) | 337 comments Wow, this article ticked me off because it made me realize that probably half the people who oppose the repeal of DOMA are doing it so that the government doesn't lose all of the taxes they get from same-gender couples not being able to file jointly.

http://www.marketwatch.com/story/the-...

But the fact that some prominent Republicans signed it does make me feel better.

message 639: by Breann (new)

I'm P.O''d too.

Wired is a major tech news source and I suspect they are right about HP not joining its tech peers in opposing DOMA or they would have printed a retraction to avoid a lawsuit, nevertheless since localized Austin Business Journal (a subsidiary of American City Business Journals) is reporting is contrary I am going to amend my original complaint about HP because I would not want to mislead people.

A human never stands so tall as when stooping to help a small computer. It is not your laptop's fault that the morally inept people who produced it don't even understand how DOMA is bad for business.

Bright, talented technology job seekers who are gay are going to go to gay-friendlier companies not HP, indeed they may even go to friendlier countries where gay marriage is legal when they choose where to have their amazing talents put to work.
